Show moreIPRO 338 project started in 2003 was designed to address the issue of knowledge transfer in the IPRO teams. Due to an 80% student turnover rate and few teams continuing across semesters a large amount of valuable project knowledge was being lost. To address this issue, the IPRO knowledge management tool – iKNOW, was developed to assist with capturing and cataloging the knowledge generated from IPRO projects during each semester. This semester, IPRO 338 was charged with the full implementation of IKNOW across the 36 teams in the IPRO Spring semester. However, since this report was completed prior to the iKNOW upload deadline, a full accounting of the number of compliant teams was unavailable.

Show moreIPRO 324, Disaster Recovery: Do-It-Yourself Home Building, is focused on designing a building manual to aid disaster victims in building new buildings. The objectives of this group are to continue the efforts made from the previous semester. This includes the creation of a manual illustrating how to build the design, design for handicap accessibility as a provision to the current design, to market this manual to a disaster relief organization that would be responsible for the distribution, to find a new client who would be interested in having this project built, and to find funding in order to build the design. Over the course of this semester, the team will be focusing on creating the manual and attempting to build the design at a site either in New Harmony, Louisana or Gulfport, Mississippi where potential clients are. The house at a bare minimum consists of a multipurpose room, a kitchen, and a bathroom; and will cost approximately $17,000. This is an affordable home/structure considering the cost of building a house now. The team is aware that some families are not fortunate enough to have a savings of $20,000 when these unexpected disasters occur. For this reason, it is an objective of the team to obtain funding.

The team will be focusing on the challenge of integrating Pervasive Computing into a specific aspect of the IIT campus. The overall vision of the IPRO 305 team is to continue efforts to develop an application called HawkTour – a virtual Illinois Institute of Technology tour guide. HawkTour will provide a completely new approach to the campus tour at IIT. The application has been designed to run on Tablet PC’s or other devices with similar computing capabilities, and provides the user with general campus information while guiding the user around campus and maintaining complete awareness of the user’s current location and intent, thereby adapting the tour to the user’s own personal preferences. Show morePolymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) convert chemical energy of fuels (eg. Hydrogen) directly to electrical energy with excellent power density, high efficiency, and zero emissions. Several challenges have delayed the commercialization of fuel cells with one being the high cost and durability of the carbon-supported-platinum-based (Pt/C) electrocatalysts. The lifetime/durability issue is critical as insufficient durability/reliability of the catalysts affects the lifetime and economical viability of these devices. Carbon support corrosion is a major durability issue since the corrosion reaction is thermodynamically favorable but kinetically sluggish under normal operating conditions. The potential transients that occur during start and stop in automotive applications can lead to electrode potential excursions of up to 1.5 V and contribute to carbon corrosion. The best way to mitigate support corrosion in PEFCs is to replace the carbon supports with alternatives having high electronic conductivity, surface area and porosity. This dissertation investigates the following carbon alternatives: (i) tin doped indium oxide (ITO) and (ii) 1:1 mixed oxides of ruthenia and silica (RSO). Microstructure characterization and electrochemical evaluations, including accelerated stress tests (start-up/shut-down and load cycling protocols) were performed to evaluate ORR activity, fuel cell performance, and electrochemical stability under PEFC operating conditions. The ITO support and 40%Pt/ITO catalysts demonstrated exceptional electrochemical stability (and reasonable ORR activity) in rotating disk electrode (RDE) experiments under accelerated potential cycling that mimicked automotive drive cycles. However, Pt/ITO exhibited poor performance and stability during MEA evaluation in a PEFC. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to reveal the degradation modes of Pt/ITO during PEFC operation and it was found that the increase in the surface hydroxide concentration generates a passivating In(OH)3 layer that increases electrode resistance and undermines PEFC performance. The influence of the catalyst support on PEM degradation during PEFC operation was also studied. Rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) experiments were employed to estimate the fraction of H2O2 generated during the ORR on the supports (C and RSO) and catalysts (benchmark Pt/C and Pt/RSO). The percentage of H2O2 generated on C and Pt/C was 50% higher than that on RSO and Pt/RSO thus explaining the observed oxidative degradation resistance of the PEM with the latter supports/catalysts.

Show moreThe practice of evidence-based medicine (EBM) encourages health professionals to make informed treatment decisions based on a careful analysis of current research. However, after caring for their patients, medical practitioners have little time to spend reading even a small fraction of the rapidly growing body of medical research literature. As a result, physicians must often rely on potentially outdated knowledge acquired in medical school. Systematic reviews of the literature exist for speci c clinical questions, but these must be manually created and updated as new research is published. Abstracts from well-written clinical research papers contain key information regarding the design and results of clinical trials. Unfortunately, the free text nature of abstracts makes it di cult for computer systems to use and time consuming for humans to read. I present a software system that reads abstracts from randomized controlled trials, extracts key clinical entities, computes the e ectiveness of the proposed interventions and compiles this information into machine readable and human readable summaries. This system uses machine learning and natural language processing techniques to extract the key clinical information describing the trial and its results. It extracts the names and sizes of treatment groups, population demographics, outcome measured in the trial and outcome results for each treatment group. Using the extracted outcome measurements, the system calculates key summary measures used by physicians when evaluating the e ectiveness of treatments. It computes absolute risk reduction (ARR) and number needed to treat (NNT) values complete with con dence intervals. The extracted information and computed statistics are automatically compiled into XML and HTML summaries that describe the details and results of the trial. xiii Extracting the necessary information needed to calculate these measures is not trivial. While there have been various approaches to generating summaries of medical research, this work has mostly focused on extracting trial characteristics (e.g. population demographics, intervention/outcome information). No one has attempted to extract all of the information needed, nor has anyone attempted to solve many of the tasks needed to reliably calculate the summary statistics.

Show moreThis EnPRO project is the first of several designed to position IIT for a competitive proposal entry in 2009 for the Solar Decathlon 2011 competition. The Solar Decathlon is a competition in which 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. The Solar Decathlon is also an event to which the public is invited to observe the powerful combination of solar energy, energy efficiency, and the best in home design. This year the event will take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. October 12 - 20. The team houses are open for touring everyday except Wednesday, October 17, when they will close for competition purposes. An overall winner is announced on Friday, October 19 at 2 p.m. Teams of college students design a solar house, knowing from the outset that it must be powered entirely by the sun. In a quest to stretch every last watt of electricity that's generated by the solar panels on their roofs, the students absorb the lesson that energy is a precious commodity. They strive to innovate, using high-tech materials and design elements in ingenious ways. Along the way, the students learn how to raise funds and communicate about team activities. They collect supplies and talk to contractors. They build their solar houses, learning as they go. The 20 teams transport their solar houses to the competition site on the National Mall and virtually rebuild them in the solar village. Teams assemble their houses, and then the active phase of the Solar Decathlon begins with an opening ceremony for students, media, and invited guests. The teams compete in contests, and even though this part of the Solar Decathlon gets the most attention, the students really win the competition through the many months of fundraising, planning, designing, analyzing, redesigning, and finally building and improving their homes. The public is invited to tour the solar homes and event exhibits during much of the competition.

Show morePrimary Objective The primary objective of this IPRO is to support the development of the first International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) accredited Category 3 program in Latin America. Secondary Objectives The secondary objectives are necessary for accomplishing the primary objective. To ensure that the program will be accredited, many guidelines must be followed; these guidelines have set the secondary objectives as follows: • Develop several educational modules concerning common diseases and their orthotic treatments • Develop several low-cost demonstrations and hand-outs to compliment the educational modules • Carefully follow ISPO requirements to ensure accreditation • Translate all material to Spanish for use in Latin America • Develop a three day short course to be presented at a Prosthetics and Orthotics conference at Bogotá, Colombia in May 2007 • Work with educators in Colombia to develop a program similar to IPRO 309
