Show moreThe objective of IPRO 305 is to build a wireless broadband network infrastructure along a local river to help Air2Access, an IIT University Technology Park Company, expand its maritime solutions offerings. We will do this by becoming familiar with cutting edge wireless broadband network technologies and the different vendors that offer and use this technology. We will also examine the pilot site and work with the appropriate Agencies to determine any natural, man-made or legal restrictions that we must abide by. To effectively complete our task in a timely manner, our team has divided into two sub-teams. The application team will focus on business applications and how to build them from off-the-shelf and custom built software. The infrastructure team will focus on technologies to support the necessary applications and will focus on the site itself, along with the required hardware deployment.

Show moreA system identification based method for assessing the performance of closed-loop systems is proposed, utilizing measures which coincide naturally with classical and modern frequency domain design specifications. Standard robust control system design methodologies seek to maximize closed-loop performance, subject to strict robustness requirements and include specifications for bandwidth and peak magnitude of the sensitivity and complementary sensitivity functions. Estimates of these transfer functions can be obtained by exciting the reference input with a zero mean, pseudo random binary sequence, observing the process output and error response, and developing a closed-loop model. Performance assessment is based on the comparison between the observed frequency response characteristics and the design specifications. Selection of appropriate model structures, experiment design, and model validation which will ensure reasonable estimates of the closed-loop transfer functions are considered in this paper. A case study involving the performance assessment of a packed bed tubular reactor control system is presented.

Show moreDuring the milling operations at an industrial steel producer like A. Finkl & Sons (Chicago, IL), a substantial amount of time and money is lost due to the fact that cutting inserts break catastrophically and without warning. The goal of this project is to devise an effective means by which a cutting insert breakage event can be quickly and reliably detected, thereby minimizing damage to the steel and other cutting inserts, and also freeing technicians to attend multiple machines at a time. This increases the productivity of their operations, and it has the potential to save A. Finkl & Sons substantial costs per year in time lost in rework and prematurely broken cutting inserts.

Show moreIndia’s huge and growing population is putting severe strain on all of the country’s natural resources. Most water sources are used on a domestic, industrial and agricultural basis. The quality of the water used is presumed to be the major problem that the people face, but the real problem is the quantity of water supplied. Quite a few organizations have been engaged with supplying drinking water to the community, but still not enough to address the needs of all the different sectors of the community, especially irrigation. In order to increase the availability of water to the people, it is necessary that the people have alternative means of supply of water, and a strong sense of the value of water.

Show moreA magnetic transducing system where a liquid-state lubricating film forms a surface layer of the record medium and the thickness of the film (which is susceptible to shear forces due to pressure contact with the transducer head) is selected to be within a critical thickness range correlated with system parameters so as to essentially minimize both wear on the transducer head and transfer of liquid to the record contact face of the head. The process of forming the liquid-state lubricating film is selected to avoid any disturbance of the molecular structure of the magnetizable layer of the record medium; and in particular the binder (preferably a cross linked polymer formulation without any constituents added for lubricating purposes) has the liquid-state lubricating film applied thereto without the assistance of swelling agents or other process steps which might be injurious to the integrity of the magnetizable layer.

Show moreIPRO321, Enhancing Reliability and Performance of a Paper Shredder, is focused on designing a better, more reliable paper shredder without increasing cost. The objectives of this group, as set forth by the sponsor, Seth Lewis of the Manhattan Group, are: 1. To determine the amount of force needed to cut 6, 8, and 10 sheets of 20 lb. paper taking into account the length and width of the shred 2. To design an efficient gear train that optimizes the number of gears and minimizes the motor size 3. To develop acoustical sound dampeners to reduce the amount of noise created during the shredding process by 10 decibels. The team will seek to accomplish these goals through the use of computer simulation, extended research, and laboratory testing and error. By the end of the semester the team anticipates having developed a mathematical model that will allow for the minimization of the amount of force used to shred various amounts of paper, to have built a gear train that works better and lasts longer, and to have noticeably reduced the amount of noise created by the shredder. The IPRO Team’s goal is to implement all of these changes to create a shredder with improved performance, reliability, and life span without increasing cost.

Show moreThe purpose of this IPRO is to develop a robust, working prototype that can automatically monitor and detect a problem with a milling machine at A. FInkl & Sons Co. This IPRO is in its fourth semester and there are two challenges remaining: (1) alerting management to the detection of broken teeth during machining; and (2) developing spatial representations of items undergoing heat treatment. However, A. Finkl & Sons has asked us to concentrate solely on the goal of finding a way to detect when a break occurs in one of the milling teeth and then alert the mechanic monitoring the machine in order to replace it. This system will involve measuring vibrations using an accelerometer or by the use of laser detection. The goal of this IPRO is to research, test, and inform A. FInkl & Sons of the best solution to invest in, therefore they can decide what is better for their company.

Show moreThe first objective of IPRO 341 is to develop a hypothetical model of the life cycle of emerging technologies through historical analysis. The team has chosen four technologies the study of which we believe will allow us to construct a working model of the life cycle of an emerging technology. The second objective of IPRO 341 is to begin an in-depth look into emerging technologies and assess its political, social, and economic impacts. By applying our hypothetical model to the current trends of emerging technologies, we will predict the impacts that the introduction of emerging technologies will have on society as a whole. The third objective of IPRO 341 is to reassess our model after completing other research dealing with emerging technologies. Since the model we develop can only be a theoretical model, we will have to continuously revise our model depending on any new information that comes about during the development of emerging technologies. The fourth objective of IPRO 341 is to provide an overview as to the importance of researching emerging technologies; how they affect society and the importance to all stakeholders involved.

Show moredistribution operation which will aid companies seeking to outsource logistics operations. However, the team’s main objective is to add a Request for Proposal tool to the existing model allowing companies to determine the effectiveness of outsourcing different aspects of warehouse operations. This team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically warehouse logistics pricing. For the spring semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Analyze existing model (Shipping, Manufacturing, Transportation, etc.) in terms of being user-friendly and effectiveness at accurately predicting cost versus revenue and whether the operations input should be outsourced. Refine the current model given the suggestions of a surveyed group, not differentiating the contributions of the IPRO students from the software users. Research costs associated with logistic processes. Develop a multi-purpose activity outsourcing tool for common use called “Request for Proposal”.

Show moreThe scope of this project is to present a variety of solutions, determining and defining a system required to implement a digital façade for the new Hype Park Art Center. The pioneering icon for the Hyde Park Art Center will engage neighbors and those who pass by, in addition to ideally attracting visitors from all over Chicago and beyond. The projection area will be the Art Center’s signature while serving many exhibition and studio needs by bringing art directly into the view of the community it serves. The idea is that the art created because of this façade will be a signature as well. Because of this, the façade system itself needs to accommodate many different digital art mediums to function as a blank canvas with opportunity for a creative manipulation by artists, visitors, and the Hyde Park Art Center to the full capabilities of the technology.
