Show moreStreptococcus salivarius is a commensal bacterium that normally inhabits the oral mucosa. However, preliminary data indicated that the strain ATCC 25975 has acquired parasitic genes from Streptococcus pneumoniae. To investigate the nature of this genetic exchange, the genome of Streptococcus salivarius ATCC 27945 was first sequenced and served as a comparative model to provide insight into the possibility of development of pathogenicity within the salivarius group. Illumina and PacBio sequencing data were used complementarily to generate reliable genomes of the Streptococcus salivarius ATCC 27945 and ATCC 25975 strains. The reads were trimmed, filtered, assembled and annotated using custom Perl scripts and various software. The completed genomes of S. salivarius ATCC 27945 and ATCC 25975 are 2.11 Mbp and 2.20 Mbp long, respectively, with ATCC 25975 featuring an additional plasmid. Comparative genomics with other sequenced salivarius genomes revealed that strain ATCC 27945 was most closely related to strains JIM8777 and NCTC8618, while strain ATCC 25975 was more closely related to strains 57I and CCHSS3. The proteins that were common across the investigated salivarius genomes included housekeeping proteins involved in pathways such as DNA replication, metabolism and DNA repair but the unique protein types and their relative location to each other within the ATCC main chromosomes did not provide conclusive evidence to the identification of the parasitic cassette. However, the plasmid contained in S. salivarius ATCC 25975 showed promising signs of containing these genes of interest. Several genes typically found in S. pneumoniae such as capsular polysaccharide genes and two copies of integrative and conjugative genes were identified in close proximity. The phylogenetic analysis of the two S. salivarius ATCC strains suggested that the proposed genes acquired from S. pneumoniae might have been gained via horizontal gene transfer rather than through sporadic mutations. The plasmid had a 5.1% smaller GC content compared to the other salivarius chromosomes, further suggesting that it was acquired from a distinct organism. Overall, while these results provided useful insights into the nature and location of the parasitic cassette, further investigations will be required to assess the full extent of the genetic shuffling that occurred by horizontal gene transfer in these Streptococcus species.

Show moreVery little unbiased information is available to the general public about energy needs, concerns, and sources. The philosophy behind IPRO 332 is that people should be sufficiently educated about their own energy choices to be able think critically about the corresponding consequences. This IPRO team will build on the work underway since Spring 2007 in developing effective methods for educating high school students about energy and sustainability, expanding our outreach to junior high school students. In addition, the team will: (1) Construct a Teaching Kit to extend the reach of the program beyond the Chicago metropolitan area to provide educators with the materials they will need to present the modules on their own and tailor it to their classrooms; (2) Complete the full-scale launch of the organization’s website, www.howmanyearths.com, to enrich the learning experience, provide a professional contact interface and build a community of engaged teachers and students; (3) Execute a formal marketing plan to build awareness of our efforts, establish our brand image, promote our work, and greatly increase visibility; and (4) Pursue grants and funding with the goal of establishing a viable, long-term, not-for-profit organization.

Show moreThe IPRO 311 Team’s overall objective is to create a conceptual design and branding of IIT as an eco-friendly campus, promoting sustainability to students, faculty and visitors. IPRO 311 is sponsored by IIT Marketing and Communication Department which seeks to portray a message of the university’s accomplishments in the area of sustainability and future capabilities. Furthermore, this project is driven by the interests of two IIT trustees with an interest to enhance the visibility of the IIT Main Campus from the I-94 expressway and other challenging vantage points (US Cellular Field, Sears Tower, McCormick Place, 2016 Olympics venues, etc.) Disney Imagineering is project partner participating with the Team through brainstorming discussion assisting the Team in building the IIT Brand. Initially, the focus of the IPRO was the development of signage that could represent sustainability and be situated at a prominent location on campus visible to the public. After several class discussions, the vision of the IRPO broadened, to develop an overall campus sustainable conceptual design, incorporating signage as one of the elements. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable concepts. There are several interrelated objectives: (1) Build IIT brand awareness and campus visibility in ways that are aesthetically pleasing, exciting and memorable. (2) Create an eco-friendly, self-sustained project that promotes general awareness of activities within the university among students, staff, faculty and the community. (3) Play a leadership role in supporting Mayor Daley's vision for creating a ultra-green Chicago by 2020. (4) Create an IIT campus sustainability plan for future IPROs to build upon.

Show moreIPRO 347 is a continuation of an IPRO, which previously explored ways to utilize waste heat and CO2 from Robbins Community Power Plant. The concluding thought from that project was that the plant would need to select a source of greenwood to burn. The goal of IPRO 347 is to establish a plan for the Robbins Community Power Plant to gather and utilize the green waste of urban lumber. The main task is to research opportunities for RCP to gather a supply of greenwood. The items being researched are estimated expenses and profits, whom will be participating, the availability of our raw good—greenwood—and potential buyers.

Show moreIPRO 330 has one clear and main purpose: to increase high school student interest in Science and Mathematics in Chicago Public Schools. This is a very lofty and broad goal, so IPRO 330 has chosen to use the Chicago Public School Science Fair program as a vehicle to achieve this purpose. IPRO 330 is a continuing IPRO, meaning that we have a foundation and a base of work that has already been accomplished. As a result, one of the project goals of this team will be to obtain in-depth feedback from professionals within IIT, from Chicago Public Schools, and certainly from other professional education venues as well. Specifically, we will be looking to obtain feedback from the three most involved sources in high school students’ lives: students, teachers, and parents. This may be the most vital part of our project, because we want to make sure that our projects and guides are of high quality and high interest to high school students. IPRO 330 has an existing bank of Science Fair projects and guides which are located on the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu. In an effort to make our website more effective and more appealing, we will have team goals to create more Science Fair projects, and guides which will target areas that Chicago Public High School Students typically have trouble addressing, such as data analysis. We feel like the guides are a way to really implement more mathematics into the Science Fair program as a whole. In addition, there will be a group of students in our IPRO focused on improving the website and implementing new projects. IPRO 330 will address these objectives by first having all members, including faculty advisors, attend and judge a Chicago Public School Science Fair. This will allow everyone working on this project to get a better sense of what we are working on, make some contacts with teachers and Science Fair Coordinators, and even get feedback from students who used the website as a resource for their project. After this initial phase, the group will break up into three teams, an infrastructure team, a communication team, and a project and guides team. In these sub teams, IPRO 330 will be able to more effectively deal with more specific issues that arise

Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester are to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research. The research conducted this semester will help us transform the space into a more sustainable working environment. Since the ultimate goal is rather ambitious, our goal for this particular semester is to implement an energy plan which will become the basis off of which the future IPRO’s will continue towards the ultimate goal. We also intend to clear the space so that the developed plan can be tested.

Show moreAs Twitter becomes a more common means for officials to communicate with their constituents, it becomes more important that we understand how officials use these communication tools. Using data from 380 members of Congress’ Twitter activity during the winter of 2012, we find that officials frequently use Twitter to advertise their political positions and to provide information but rarely to request political action from their constituents or to recognize the good work of others. We highlight a number of differences in communication frequency between men and women, Senators and Representatives, Republicans and Democrats. We provide groundwork for future research examining the behavior of public officials online and testing the predictive power of officials’ social media behavior.
