Show moreThe overall objective of IPRO 340 is to improve the quality of healthcare by improving information technology at ACCESS health care. The specific objective of the Spring 2006 semester is to help to prepare ACCESS to adopt new technology. The first main assignment of the team is to determine employees’ current computer skill levels by refining and rolling out last semester’s computer Assessment Plan. Our second main assignment is to investigate training solutions and develop the training protocol that will bring ACCESS employee’s up to date with the computer skills they will need to adopt new information technologies ACCESS plans to implement in the near future. Our last assignment is to investigate various Electronic Medical Record (EMR) functionalities and compare leading EMR vendors to support ACCESS in deciding which EMR vendor to implement throughout their network.

Show moreWhat if the school were more like a playground; a laboratory for exploration and discovery? What if the place itself actually inspired the students within it? My proposal for a new primary school in Chicago attempts to become such a place. With an emphasis on wellness and ecologically based practices the school becomes a teaching tool. Featuring a diverse range of flexible interior and exterior spaces, the building supports different learning environments. The school also encourages community involvement through shared resources and volunteer opportunities. The project becomes more than a school; an integral part of the neighborhood and place to experience learning.

Show moreThis project was done as a response to the thriving public performance community at the northern side of Grant park in Chicago, IL. As a former resident of the South Loop a rift was readily perceived between the North and South ends of the park in both venues for entertainment as well as general amenities. This project looked to fill a void on the south end of the park to create both a more welcoming outdoor space for the public but also to create a performance venue that could help bring business and pedestrian traffic to the southern end of the loop.

Show moreThe team will assist an independent inventor, Mr. Julius Jones, Jr., in developing his idea for a computer game that could help wheelchair users improve their hand-eye coordination and reflexes, and which would be enjoyable, interesting, and motivating for them to play. In exploring design ideas, for the game, the team will have an opportunity to meet and confer with wheelchair bound students who this past summer successfully completed a path-breaking hike on a rugged trail in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (New York Times, August 12, 2000, p. A1). The IPRO team will work on developing computer animation models of possible scenarios for the game. This IPRO combines analysis of needs and interests of mobility-impaired individuals from perspectives of the human and social sciences (psychology, sociology, etc.) with developing ideas about how to address those needs in a meaningful way through a computer game (design, electrical and computer engineering, computer science, etc.)

Show moreCalamos Investments provides professional money management services to major corporations, public and private institutions, pension funds, insurance companies and individuals and is an investment advisor to open-end and closed-end funds. The company was founded in 1977 by John Calamos. The company’s cornerstone strategy is risk management. Calamos Investments underwent rapid growth, from managing $5 billion in assets in 1999 to over $45 in 2006. During this period, a lot of the personal touch that permeated the interaction between clients and the company’s leadership was lost. The number of clients grew too quickly. A high level of personal interaction between John Calamos and its core investors became difficult to attain. The IPRO 303 team attempted to digitally leverage John Calamos by researching and piloting new methods of customer interaction utilizing digital communication technologies.

Show moreA Summer 2003 EnPRO team after reviewing the work done by previous IPRO teams and listening to wishes of both Professor Ladenson and Mr. Julius Jones, Jr., a Chicago independent inventor, decided that the Avoidatrak IPRO needed a new and fixed direction. That direction was that the collision avoidance game should incorporate a positive depiction of the abilities of disabled individuals in the form of a wheelchair basketball computer game. The purpose of this Summer 2004 IPRO was to do preliminary research and discover useful contacts for a Fall IPRO to begin designing Avoidatrak. Specifically, our goal was to generate a document that might be useful to the Fall IPRO team in understanding what the Avoidatrak game should and should not contain. In order to accomplish this goal, the IPRO team divided itself into two preliminary teams. Team 1 focused on the organizational and meaning that the game should incorporate, namely focusing on what disabled basketball players thought of the game and ways to make it an appealing and uplifting experience. Focus was also placed on the structure of the game, i.e. the level it is played at (locally, nationwide, international). Team 2 focused primarily on the actual game rules, strategies, and technicalities. Part of the research required was to discover what things set apart wheelchair basketball from able-bodied basketball. A consequence of coming up with rules and game play was that team 2 also contemplated various methods of interacting with the game through standard and widely available controllers.

Show moreWe would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced signal processing from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released last year. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage.

Together architects and engineers will modify and re analyze a structure created by pervious designers, and select any new materials for construction. In creating the hotel students will be responsible for the structural analysis of columns, beams, foundation, steel, and concrete design required to insure all serviceability requirements. The students will be required to follow the 2006 International Building Code, and secure the safety of all possible occupants. Management, leadership, ethics, and teamwork will be an integral part of building a large scale structure as students learn to work together on a “real life” project.
