Show moreIPRO 347 is a continuation of an IPRO, which previously explored ways to utilize waste heat and CO2 from Robbins Community Power Plant. The concluding thought from that project was that the plant would need to select a source of greenwood to burn. The goal of IPRO 347 is to establish a plan for the Robbins Community Power Plant to gather and utilize the green waste of urban lumber. The main task is to research opportunities for RCP to gather a supply of greenwood. The items being researched are estimated expenses and profits, whom will be participating, the availability of our raw good—greenwood—and potential buyers.

Show moreThe team for IPRO 317 is tasked with working on developing a pervasive training program. This program will integrate various psychological and technological applications. As such the team working on this project has split into 2 groups to work on these respective applications. The idea of pervasive training addresses a dire need in the field of corporate training. This concept allows companies to put their employees through training by making them self-aware. This method of training also enables employers to train their employees with minimal disruption to productivity. Our intention is to implement this training through the employee’s hand held devices. Each employee would select a group of peer to fill out an assessment, the combination of the peer assessments, an assessment performed by the employee’s supervisor and one by the employee themselves would constitute the evaluation of employee. The employee would then receive a series of periodic e-mails to their mobile device that they would then need to respond to in order to complete this training. After a pre-designated amount of time for this training the employee will fill out a new survey and receive their results. A significant motivator for this training is that it is purely voluntary and allows the employee to receive these evaluations without their employer knowing any of the results aside from completion status. From our research team we hope to derive a set of themes by which to rate the employee as well as survey questions. What this will lead to is a group of teachable moments. These moments will be reminders for the employee based upon the results of their surveys. Once this system is derived the research team will begin a search for appropriate test organizations for us to run our trials on. While this is being done our development team will build a website to distribute and compile these surveys. This site will also send out our teachable moments and maintain this data. All of this will be done on a desktop computer that will be converted into a server. Once testing begins, this team will be responsible for assisting the test users in the survey and teaching process. These team members will provide support for any issues the users will have as well as for maintaining the website integrity during this process. Ultimately once this initial phase is done our hope is that this product will move immediately into production. Our hope is that with the success of our project this will become a new standard in the training of employees. With this being the case employers will be able to train more employees with less loss of production. Our goal is for this to be used with every employee and not just those in management.

Show moreCompetitive cyclists around the world are using technology to monitor training data in order to improve their training methods. Power measurements are important to such training, however existing power meters are expensive and the cyclist must replace existing crank sets. Thus, IPRO 324 intends to develop a power meter that not only can be applied to any crank set but that will accurately collect and transmit data to current cycling computers as well as cost significantly less than comparable systems.

Show moreThe purpose of this project is the advancement in knowledge of, and applied practical solutions to the challenges of sustainability in regards to a very specialized area of water conservation. The harvesting of air conditioner condensate could potentially lead to the conservation of a great deal of both water and money. Pentair, a company specialized in providing water solutions, is interested in the technology to harvest the condensate from A/C in buildings, and is our sponsor. We aimed to create public awareness surrounding the potential non-potable use of air conditioner condensate through demonstration and presentation. The IPRO Team of Summer 2011 will advance the prior work by focusing upon building public awareness and working to change public policy. The Team will utilize social media promotional strategies/messages and implementation. The Team will also identify the practical and political barriers to main stream harvesting of condensate and develop action plans to overcome the barriers. The two activities of the Team will be to build public enthusiasm for condensate harvesting via social media and secondly to summarize all IPRO condensate efforts into a presentation with collateral materials and share it with organizations that have outreach missions of sustainability and conservation.

Show moreFor structural applications, grain re nement has been shown to enhance mechanical properties such as strength, fatigue resistance, and fracture toughness. Through control of the thermo-mechanical processing parameters, dynamic recrystallization mechanisms were used to produce microstructures consisting of sub-micron grains in 9310 steel, 4140 steel, and Ti-6Al-4V. In both 9310 and 4140 steel, the distribution of carbides throughout the microstructure a ected the ability of the material to dynamically recrystallize and determined the size of the dynamically recrystallized grains. Processing the materials at lower temperatures and higher strain rates resulted in ner dynamically recrystallized grains. Microstructural process models that can be used to estimate the resulting microstructure based on the processing parameters were developed for both 9310 and 4140 steel. Heat treatment studies performed on 9310 steel showed that the sub-micron grain size obtained during deformation could not be retained due to the low equilibrium volume fraction of carbides. Commercially available aluminum alloys were investigated to explain their high strain rate deformation behavior. Alloys such as 2139, 2519, 5083, and 7039 exhibit strain softening after an ultimate strength is reached, followed by a rapid degradation of mechanical properties after a critical strain level has been reached. Microstructural analysis showed that the formation of shear bands typically preceded this rapid degradation in properties. Shear band boundary misorientations increased as a function of equivalent strain in all cases. Precipitation behavior was found to greatly in uence the microstructural response of the alloys. Additionally, precipitation strengthened alloys were found to exhibit similar ow stress behavior, whereas solid solution strengthened alloys exhibited lower ow stresses but higher ductility during dynamic loading. Schmid factor maps demonstrated that shear band formation behavior was in uenced by texturing in these alloys.

Show moreThis project will investigate the technical, legal and economic issues associated with designing, building, installing and operating a wind speed/direction monitoring station on the lakefront that provides real-time data to a web site for convenient access by wind surfer enthusiasts, sailors and others. A need has been identified among the wind surfer enthusiasts in the Chicago area for improved information about wind conditions at selectedlocations along the Lake Michigan shore that are popular sites for wind surfing as well as sailing. General information about wind speed and direction is available today from the National Weather Service, but unfortunately it is not sufficiently localized or up-to-date to provide a reliable indication of existing conditions or trends. Access to highly reliable and more accurate predictive information at a specific location is important to wind surfers, because there is considerable wasted time and effort associated with traveling to a wind surfing location, only to find that the conditions are not acceptable. The team will explore the feasibility of designing, installing and operating a wind monitoring station at a location along the lakefront. An initial task may be to investigate any related installations around the country that monitor local conditions and present it in real time on the web. This project involves mechanical and electrical design, as well as control software and web site development. The project work extends beyond the technical in order to address the range of practical issues that must be addressed to make it happen. This includes investigating the legal (liability), regulatory (permitting), aesthetic (ordinances), economic (installation, maintenance), safety, security, public relations and marketing issues. This project is a continuation of a Fall 2001 project that has been making progress in developing a prototype.
