Show moreIPRO 312 for Spring 2007 was initially intended to research rapid response manufacturing of casters for Colson Associates; however, as objectives of the company shifted course, IPRO 312 was left without a target of research. A new idea of pharmaceuticals arose as a topic of study. The teammates were determined to hunt for information pertaining to problems in the pharmaceutical field, but this determination was cut short by the realization that it is a very secure, secretive, and private business. The teammates of this IPRO were not discouraged by this obstacle and kept pressing for information. The advisor, Prof. Maurer, brought in speakers from the field and helped the class change its direction into what it is today: Comparative Industrial Operations Analysis.

Show moreThis IPRO is designed to support the Department of Homeland Security national security initiatives as outlined by the United States Government. The goal is to design a project that supports homeland security compliance guidelines. For example, depending upon interests of the group, a software program could be developed containing a matrix of risk and preventive factors which could be used to assess how well an organization meets Homeland Security Guidelines. Items might involve public policy, computer technology, facilities, transportation, communications, EPA, security, water and air. The need to protect our facilities and people in the Chicago area given recent terrorist activities and the frequent, heightened state of alerts is critical. A well-defined homeland security project can help in contributing to the initiative of establishing homeland readiness. This hands-on project will afford students the opportunity to research an apply concepts of transportation, mechanical, electrical, power, economics, and especially computer technology and engineering to homeland security.
