Show moreThe IPRO 347 team intends to seize the opportunity given by Robbins Community Power (RCP) to improve the efficiency of the power plant. RCP plans to convert the facility from its original role as an incinerator into a wood biomass electricity plant. Working with RCP, the team will look at thermodynamic values to determine how to best utilize the excess heat generated from the boiler that currently radiates out the cooling towers. Additionally, the team will research and discuss possible solutions to be implemented on the 22 acre site. The intricacies that arise from the nontraditional nature of our plan require we split into two groups. One sub-team will look into exactly where the waste heat exists and the values of viable energy available in the form of steam or hot water. This team will seek interdisciplinary advice as part of the energy analysis. The second, but most influential, sub-team will predominantly be researching feasible outlets for the recovered energy. Some solutions they will pursue include supplying nearby greenhouses with CO2, providing on-site and local heat, and increasing the efficiency of the plant through drying processes.

Show moreParsons Brinckerhoff (PB) is an engineering, construction, technical, and management services firm that provides diverse solutions to private industrial customers worldwide, as well as to federal, regional, and local government agencies. Gathering requirements and feedback from the stakeholders for each project is imperative to meet the client’s needs. This process may be challenging due to the stakeholders’ diversity, location and time constraints. IPRO 320 was commissioned to design an application to interact with stakeholders for all PB projects. The stakeholders will be able to access information and take surveys, as well as post comments and other forms of multimedia to voice their opinions related to specific PB projects. During the summer 2011 semester, the IPRO developed concepts for an operational mobile application and web browser called PB OUR SPACE. To begin, this project required a vast amount of research and collaboration with Parsons Brinckerhoff. In order to make the most of a limited amount of time, the semester was divided into two parts. The first half of the semester was used to gather information about PB to build a better understanding of what would be required for the application. For the second half of the semester, we utilized that information to create a storyboard showing how the application will be used and developed. The functionality of the mobile application and browser is detailed in Appendix 3: Storyboard. The future IPRO team will be able to continue and expand this work by creating a working prototype of the storyboard concepts. All our work this semester has been compiled and filed to help make a smooth transition between semesters. This information contains the progress made thus far as well as recommendations for development of the application. By providing this information, the developed storyboard and proposed conclusions will make a solid framework for the development of the product, PB OUR SPACE (stakeholders’ perspectives about contextual elements).

Show moreThe project will be a continuing multi-semester development. The first semester will be a period where the students and faculty decide which route to take, research the feasibility, research old or create new designs, structure a plan, and set up the contacts necessary to achieve one or more of the following: (1) Plan and design a clinic, (2) Plan and design a school, (3) Research problems and difficulties that current relief organizations have been encountering and develop viable solutions, (4) plan and design (and build?) cost-effective homes in collaboration with other universities (e.g. University of Houston).

Show moreThe Universal Car Project is an attempt to utilize the web to design and specify a “universal” platform upon which a wide range of functional vehicles can be designed for developing countries. The method for developing the car will be to start with a “wiki-type” organization that will develop the standards for the basic platform, including wheel-base, construction method, materials, and standard mounting points. Once the basic platform has been standardized, the rest of the car will have an “open architecture”. Everyone who has interest and expertise could utilize the basic platform to design parts/assemblies to turn it into a complete vehicle. Individuals/companies/countries would be able to customize the platform to produce any type of vehicle that was needed or desired. This IPRO will design the process for developing the Universal Car Organization (UCO), which would design and license the basic platform and make sure that its standards were maintained. The UCO would also certify that parts/assemblies were attachable to the basic platform. Otherwise they would allow individuals/companies/countries to design and build whatever type of vehicles needed in their countries/regions. This would utilize the expertise of many more individuals and companies than is now available to the automobile industry.

Show moreIPRO 332’s objective is to develop the groundwork for a tool, to be implemented either in Chicago Public School classrooms or community centers, which will deliver balanced, non-biased information to its constituents about energy issues that affect their daily lives. We seek to do this, firstly, by familiarizing ourselves with the most pressing energy issues, identifying knowledge deficits concerning these issues, and selecting areas around which our concentrated effort will be most productive. Second, we will be studying current teaching methodologies and technologies in order to ensure our tool is as effective as possible. And, finally, we will identify companies, agencies and organizations currently working to deliver energy information, and learn from their expertise and experience. Through this research, we hope to learn from those currently endeavoring to spread fact-based information about energy, while developing a program of our own that ascribes to the requirements of the Chicago Public Schools’ Curriculum guidelines.

Show moreThe aim of this IPRO was to assist our community partner the Save the Ramova Group, in developing new ideas for the renovation of the Ramova Theatre, which is located on the south side of the cross street of 35th and Halsted in Bridgeport. The theatre which has been around since the 1930’s has fallen into disrepair and has suffered a lot of damage over the years due to no maintenance and weathering through the seasons. The renovation of the theatre would not only mark the revival of a nostalgic memory but it would open up new avenues of development along the Halsted St. Corridor in addition to being a place that people in and around Bridgeport can go to for entertainment and leisure close to their homes. This semester the IPRO team started building a design initiative from scratch; by creating and handing out surveys to various groups of people, along with creating different studies in order to gain information on the needs and wants of the community along with the perspectives of the vast different groups of people in the neighbouring areas. After the data collection, it was analysed and as a result a preliminary program was drawn up by the group along with a cash flow report called a proforma that shows the feasibility of the project. In the following semesters the IPRO team should be able to develop the preliminary program into a sustainable design of the renovated theater as well as analyse the feasibility of the design and integrate the various building systems into the design in order to restore the Ramova to a fully working condition.

Show moreThere exists a strong demand for orthotics and prosthetics (O & P) in Latin America, with approximately 2.5 million people in need of this type of care. IPRO 309 was started in the spring of 2006 with the goal of helping to make this type of care more readily available. However, there are only 50 certified, and 1500 uncertified, O & P practitioners in Latin America. In order to become a certified practitioner, a student must graduate from an ISPO accredited program. Unfortunately, there is currently only one ISPO accredited program in existence in Latin America, along with several other programs that are not ISPO accredited. In October of 2004, Centro Don Bosco (Bogotá, Colombia), Don Bosco University (San Salvador, El Salvador), and the Laboratorio Gilete (Bogotá, Colombia) signed an agreement to establish the first accredited O & P education program in Colombia. Since then, Centro Don Bosco has allotted 3,500 square feet of space for the thriving faculty, classrooms, manufacturing training, and vocational workspace that are necessary for an ISPO accredited program. There are three levels of accreditation according to ISPO standards. Category III involves the design and manufacturing of orthotic and prosthetic devices, Category II includes the fabrication of the devices as well as direct patient care, and Category I includes production, treatment for patients, and research and development. The equivalent to ISPO in the United States is the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC). Because it is independent from the ISPO, the ABC standards of accreditation will need to be taken into account in order to carefully cross cultural and national boundaries.

Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities. Three major projects currently hold latent potential for the school: the communications center, the sustainability wall, and the overall greening of the facilities. If these projects are completed correctly, they will become a catalyst for positive change. We are proposing to create a transition from library to communication center because of its isolated state in the school. The sustainability wall is two-fold in terms of benefit. It will upgrade the current windows which are lacking and will create an interesting learning tool. Greening of the entire school is the third project and includes windows, roofing, etc. to improve efficiency. Through the use of all three proposals, IPRO 314 believes in the school promotion and what enrollment it could bring.

Show moreIPRO 307 is following the path of its predecessors in order to help improve the shipping transportations and facilities in Kankakee County, IL. While there have been other IPRO teams that have contributed to the modernization of the intermodal system at MI-Jack Shipping Company, our sponsor is now looking for us to further their research in this field. They would also like us to further the research in high speed intermodal along with a viaduct enhancement system. One of our tasks is to select a location in Kankakee County to place the intermodal system. We have decided to break this into two locations with one being in-city and the other being out-of-city. Kankakee County has been selected because two major rail lines pass through it. There is also a highway that runs through the center of it. Therefore, it is an ideal 2 location for an intermodal yard. Also, there is a wind farm being built in Kankakee, so we will be able to save energy by thinking green. In our selection process for a location, we may need to relocate some people. Therefore, our plan is to have affordable housing at our out-of-city location. We will design this affordable housing along with the warehouses and storage facilities, which go along with the design of an intermodal yard.
