Show moreThe direction IPro 307 “Intermodal Container Transport” is taking for the 2008 semester is geared toward alternative energy technologies as well as expansion of the capacity and efficiency of a designated rail transfer yard. The selected exploration site is the Norfolk Southern rail transfer yard at 47th street near the Dan Ryan Expressway. Since there is a large amount of on-site equipment (Mi-Jack side loaders, cranes, and yard hostlers), the possibility of introducing alternative fuel technologies exists and can provide a cleaner and more cost-effective solution to air pollution and rising fuel costs. The group will be focusing efforts on using wind power in parallel with compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel, as well as designing innovative ways to improve yard capacity and efficiency. The ultimate goal of this IPro is to develop a plan to increase yard efficiency and output, while at the same time incorporating green technology as an alternative energy source for the facility equipment.

However, much of the underserved and underinsured public are not benefiting from the breakthroughs as one might expect. In order for the existing facilities to better serve the public, gradual transformations and upgrades must be made. This is the challenge being tackled by our IPRO: How can we realistically suggest a renovation model for existing Access Community Health Network facilities which would promote cost efficiency and technological advancement in both environmental and operational capacities? - The primary objective of this session of IPRO 340 is to deliver a five-year model for which existing Access Community Healthcare facilities can be shaped into more environmentally and operationally efficient centers for medical treatment. - In designing such a model, secondary goals include familiarization with cutting edge medical technology, modernized building flow, spatial relations, as well as the development of business process models. In addition, we plan to investigate ways in which Access Community Healthcare can enhance the level of patient experience by making peoples’ visit to their facilities more enjoyable and informative.

Show moreSafety critical estimation applications require quantification of integrity risk, which is the probability of the state estimate error exceeding predefined bounds of acceptability. Integrity risk can only be evaluated when the state estimate error probability density function is precisely known, necessitating stochastic models that exactly describe measurement noise and disturbance inputs. Uncertainty in these models directly results in inaccurate assessments of integrity risk. This dissertation develops the first implementable methods to upper bound integrity risk when the autocorrelation functions of stochastic inputs reside between upper and lower bounding functions. The first part of this work considers real-valued estimation applications that use the Kalman filter or batch weighted least squares estimator. Explicit relations are developed between the estimate error variance and autocorrelation functions using a new generalized covariance matrix derived in this dissertation. From these expressions, two methods are provided to upper bound integrity risk. The first method enables fast computation of a conservative bound, and the second method produces the minimum upper bound via semi-definite optimization. Mixed real/integer estimation applications utilizing integer bootstrapping are the focus of the second part of this work. The integrity risk bound is formally defined as the global solution to a non-convex optimization problem over a polytope. Determination of the polytopic region is difficult, and two bounding approaches are initially developed for a circumscribing hyper-rectangular feasible region. Using an innovative method to define the polytope together with linear programming, a third method is derived to upper bound integrity risk over the true polytopic feasible region.

Work to be concluded and closed-out from last semester:  Final LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) documentation and identification of individuals that might be part of a LEED team should the school desire to pursue that route.  Final design of Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.) elements including a re-design of the elevator, and approval by the client.  Using the Code of Ethics written last semester as a base line, the code will be rewritten to strengthen its objective to provide guidance for the I-Pro. New projects to begin and completed this semester are:  The roof re-design- Green roof options. This may also include storm water retention and grey water recycling systems, as well as any updates to the buildings primary plumbing systems.  Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) - Lab hoods, air conditioning load calculations and Hydronic Heating.  Electrical systems design- Illumination calculations and design, Alarm systems, and ‘Off-heating’ load calculations from equipment to be housed in Alumni Memorial Hall (A.M.H.).  Construction schedule.  Cost estimate.

She is also a frequent visitor to schools, conducting "Meet the Author Day", where she speaks to both students and teachers about realizing their dreams. Angela's mission is to provide young children with books and toys that will enhance their learning and broaden their thinking. Show moreThe goal of IPRO 320 is to create an online professional network for school teachers at the kindergarten through twelfth grade level to allow for the sharing of ideas, lesson plans and other professionally relevant information. This is a continuing project which saw limited success in the previous semester in that a functioning web site was constructed based on surveys of public school teachers but it saw very little use. This semester, the planned approach is to build on the research generated last semester by performing additional market research with teachers. Following that, IPRO 320 will rework much of the previous web site by refining some of the features, adding additional ones as the research indicates and improving the website in general, both functionally and aesthetically.

Show moreIPRO 364: Ramovation has the great opportunity to assist our community partner, Save the Ramova organization, in the development of preliminary design and business opportunity assessments for the renovation of the Ramova Theater. IPRO 364 is a continuing IPRO from the spring 2011 semester. From the spring semester, the IPRO 364 team created a preliminary program for the Ramova Theater renovation. The preliminary program was informed by analysis gathered from three research methods: case studies on other theater renovations, survey responses from the Bridgeport neighborhood and surrounding colleges, and contextual studies on neighborhoods similar to Bridgeport. A preliminary budget for the renovation was also determined. To tackle the summer 2011 IPRO workload, the summer team will divide into several sub groups which include the Design/Clean Energy Group, Budget/Finance Group, Case Study/Survey Group, and the Interview Group. In the summer semester, the IPRO team will expand on the preliminary program and preliminary budget created by the spring team. The IPRO group hopes the output from the Spring 2011, Summer 2011, and subsequent semesters will assist the Save the Ramova organization in presenting Ramova Theater renovation ideas to key stakeholders and also help spur development on the Halsted St. corridor of Bridgeport.
