The same project from last semester, the New United Center, will be analyzed, explored, and redesigned in detail to meet new requirements. The primary goal in this semester long project is to implement the knowledge and new techniques learned at IIT along with the experience from individual members in order to create a unique and superior product. Show moreThe main problem which our project faces is what to plan to build in the Michael Reese site, which was recently demolished to make room for the Olympic village. Since Chicago did not win the bid for the 2016 Olympics, the site remains vacant and unused. The basis of the IPRO is to develop a plan for this site, and, specifically, to design a building to serve as an anchor for the area. This anchor building should serve the community while still remaining economical.

Show moreThere are currently around 40 million people living in urban slums without adequate water and sanitation in India. In addition, there is no sewage system in urban slums and water is not being recycled. In a particular slum in Mumbai that we are looking at, people need to walk to the foothill 2km away in order to get water. It takes a lot of time to carry su cient amount of water for a family for daily use. Water obtained in this way is primarily used for washing. Since there is no private place for people to wash, people often wash themselves on the street and the water is simply wasted. Our team attempted to address two main issues for this semester. Firstly, we tried to provide people with clean and private facility for washing while allowing the water to be recycled. Secondly, we tried to make transporting water easier and more e cient by developing a device that allows you to carry water on your back.

For some, ideas about GM crops are exciting and represent hope for new potential in science and agriculture, for others they represent potential danger, and for others there are simply many unanswered questions. Our goal this semester will be to create a new source of information about GM products and to provide information that will answer the many questions we all have about this important subject. To do this, our objectives will be to: 1. Collect background information in an unbiased and comprehensive manner about laws and regulations regarding genetically modified crops. 2. Gather information about public opinion concerning GM crops. 3. Present facts about the processes and technologies that are used in this industry. 4. Create a database of known genetically modified crops, potential allergens, and traits in order to provide future IPRO’s with a foundation of knowledge concerning GM crops.

Show moreTo improve the wear resistance of titanium and extend its service life, coating boron nitride thin films on the surface of titanium matrix was studied in this work. To obtain surface property enhancement, the samples were coated by isothermal sintering at 1000°C – 1400°C in a vacuum furnace for 2h, 4h or 6h. The microstructure of the thin film was investigated employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). To identify the composition of interlayers between BN and Ti, EDS analysis was run through the whole reaction zone. It showed that the BN was being consumed, titanium borides (TiB and TiB2), titanium nitride (TiN1-x), and solid solution of nitrogen in titanium (α-Ti (N)) layers formed at the interface between the BN coating and Ti matrix. Correspondingly, the XRD analysis indicated that TiB, TiB2, TiN, and α-Ti(N) phases were presented in good agreement with the EDS result. The layers grew fast in the sintering process which benefited from the fine grain size and highly oriented layers grown in the reaction zone. However, the well-known parabolic diffusional growth is only part of mechanisms for explaining the reactiondiffusion kinetics. The diffusion paths were obtained from the phase sequences at the interface between BN and Ti and thus could be represented on the isothermal section of the B-N-Ti ternary diagram. Moreover, the influence of the sintering temperature and the length of the actual sintering period on the layer sequences and thickness of the reaction zone were investigated. The micro-hardness test results showed that the Ti matrix with deposited BN thin films exhibited significant increased surface hardness. Obviously, the surface hardness xiii rose along with sintering temperature and holding time, and the hardness could be improved over 50%.

Furthermore, indoor air pollution is fifth most costly environmental degradation issue in the Peru. Previous IPRO 325 classes have made stove for Peru. However, the stoves made from previous IPRO 325 classes did not work properly. The purpose of this subteam of the spring 2010 IPRO 325 is to improve the stove and help Peru realistically.

Davis, is a retired elementary teacher with a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction/Early Childhood Education. Her passion for educating young people led her to develop a series of books that would be both educational and enjoyable. She is also a frequent visitor to schools, conducting "Meet the Author Day", where she speaks to both students and teachers about realizing their dreams. Angela's mission is to provide young children with books and toys that will enhance their learning and broaden their thinking. To that end, she has developed a concept for a line of learning doll called Tummi Pals. Angela has researched the market and has not found a doll with the attributes of Tummi Pal. Residential garage door operators currently utilize an IR emitter and detector pair to identify the presence of an object breaking the "beam". This sensor is used to reduce the risk of a moving garage door striking an object in its path.The IPRO team will investigate the use of an inexpensive CCD camera to replace, and potentially expand, this functionality. The scope of this project will include but not necessarily be limited to: (a) understanding regulatory requirements for devices currently used on operators, and attempting to anticipate how current requirements will be interpreted and or modified to cover this new sensor, (b) identifying optical and electronic requirements to meet anticipated regulatory requirements, (c) examining current patents for devices utilizing similar technology, (d) developing a single sample device optimized for minimum development time and (e) estimating the projected cost for this system, when optimized for functionality, cost and produceability.

Show moreIn an age where sustainability and “going green” have reached an all time high in both the media, and in politics, new initiatives are being explored more than ever before. Many of these initiatives would require drastic changes both in the way corporations do business, and in the way average citizens live their lives. However, there are initiatives which require very little change in lifestyle and business practice, and potentially represent great savings to those who choose to implement them. Like its predecessors, IPRO 346 aims to raise public awareness of the recycling and reuse of condensate produced by air-conditioning systems. This condensate is a byproduct of all AC units, and is currently sent straight to the sewer. Studies conducted by previous IPROs have not only indicated great potential for this initiative, but have also shown a great deal of public interest. Unfortunately, they have also revealed government policies and city codes which greatly restrict the use of this abundant resource. The aim of IPRO 346 is to work towards a change in these policies through the demonstration of a viable system. Members of the team equipped with a model of the systems we propose will meet with public officials, and others interested in the system, demonstrating its potential in hopes of getting policies in place which would allow such a system to be implemented. The IPRO has two main objectives: the development of a prototype and model for demonstration, and the marketing of the idea through the use of both social networks, and presentations to anyone interested. It is the aim of this team, that the accomplishment of these goals will result in both public demand for AC condensate recycling systems, and public policies which allow their use.
