Show moreHigh temperature, short time pasteurization was used to evaluate a computer-based system for controlling the pasteurization process, acquiring data, and monitoring records. Software was used for the control of hot water temperature, flow rate through the centrifugal timing pump, and diversion of under-processed product. Three types of control strategies were conducted: single loop, cascade, and multivariable. The single loop control strategy showed the most rapid responses to temperature changes, but the temperature response curve was slowest to return to its set point. The cascade control strategy showed slower recoveries to temperature changes, but the temperature response curve was smoother. The multivariable control strategy responded slightly faster than the cascade control strategy, and the temperature response curve was slightly smoother than the cascade control strategy. The multivariable control strategy was able to control the flow diversion valve by the use of a lethality controller. The data acquisition system, used to monitor the data obtained from the high temperature, short-time pasteurization system, was within +/- 0.1 degrees C of the temperature recorded by the safety thermal limit recorder. Reliability was determined by examining the changes in the position of the flow diversion valve to identify process deviations and by comparing the changes to the event marker on circular charts. The data acquisition system was an effective alternative for monitoring the completeness of data.

The goal of IPRO 347 is to establish a plan for the Robbins Community Power Plant to gather and utilize the green waste of urban lumber. The main task is to research opportunities for RCP to gather a supply of greenwood. The IPRO team will develop a requirement definition for a browser-based workgroup collaboration tool by interviewing selected personnel at General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD). Using this requirement definition, candidate solutions will be identified and evaluated. Based on a combination of factors, including weighted requirements, adherence to technology standards, and cost of implementation, the team will recommend at least two alternative solutions. The recommendation should identify the preferred solution and suggest a negotiating strategy and a deployment strategy for that solution. At the end of the project, the team will be able to provide a requirement definition, weighted by importance, an evaluation matrix depicting each solution considered, a summary evaluation of each solution considered, and a recommendation of the software, hardware, negotiating strategy and deployment strategy for two possible solutions.

Penn Machine manufactures noise-damping wheels, including the PCC Standard Resilient Wheel, the first successful resilient transit wheel, and the Bochum 54 and 84 resilient wheels under license from Fried. Krupp Huttenwerke A.G., Bochum, Germany. These resilient composite material wheel sets produced by Penn Machine Company have been widely accepted in light rail operations around the world (e.g. Paris, Berlin, San Francisco, Washington, D.C.). However, even though they provide longer life and reduced maintenance, and most significantly lower noise, etc., they have a higher initial cost than the current wheels used in rapid transit operations like the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). This has made it very challenging to gain interest and acceptance by those responsible for rapid transit purchase decisions that impact engineering, maintenance, finance and operations.At this time, Penn Machine Company is interested in supporting an IPRO team that would study the complex combination of technical, marketing, financial, and community issues associated with demonstrating, specifying and accepting resilient wheel product technology in rapid transit applications. An IPRO team can play an important role in defining the complete "value proposition" for a rapid transit operation like the CTA, and provide independent, unbiased views on the full benefits vs. costs of their resilient wheel product technology. A particular benefit of an IPRO team working on this problem is that IIT students and consulting faculty can prepare their analysis and recommendations from a local Chicago perspective. There are several tasks that the team can undertake, based on guidance provided by the sponsor and available time during the semester: (1) review extensive engineering analyses and research reports and studies available from Penn Machine Company and its German licensor to fully understand and confirm the best available technology for rail wheel performance enhancement, and noise and vibration mitigation; (2) review the state-of-the-art and visit rapid transit and light rail operations in the U.S.;(3) evaluate procurement and purchase decision processes associated with rail car and other capital equipment investments in the passenger rail transportation industry;(4) study the variety of financial analyses (first cost, life cycle cost, present value analysis, etc.) used to support purchase decision making for products with high initial cost but competitive life cycle cost in various industries;(5) study the historical context of urban development, decline and renewal that influence social, political and economic cost-benefit considerations of noise, vibration and other environmental issues associated with local transit operations, ridership, and affected communities and structures adjacent to rail right-of-way; and(6) study the effect of government regulations (e.g., Federal Railway Administration) and related industry standards and practices (American Association of Railroads, Occupational Safety and Health Administration) on the specification and purchase of technologies that have long term economic and social benefit. In general, the IPRO team may identify creative approaches for enhancing the "value proposition" for marketing these rail wheel set products. The results of the IPRO team's work should be focused to developing a thorough, broad study of technical, economic, organizational, business/marketing, and community issues. The goal is to create a compelling case for gaining rail transit commitment to collaborate on demonstrating the efficacy of resilient wheel products offered by Penn Machine Company.

Show moreMany people around the world are in need of orthotic and/or prosthetic care due to pathologies that cannot be effectively treated any other way. There is a great need for establishing and sustaining educational opportunities. Our IPRO focuses on the population of South America, and more specifically Colombia. Our goal is to provide them with educational information to support their existing Orthotic and Prosthetic (O&P) Technician training program at Centro don Bosco in Bogotá. We will continue the work of previous IPROs by creating modules that concentrate on O&P solutions to pathologies that occur on different areas of the body, specifically upper limb, spine, and lower limb. This semester we will also test the effectiveness of our educational modules by using the modules exclusively to fabricate an actual orthotic device. Our modules will also be translated to Spanish for the audience in Colombia.

Show moreThere exists a strong demand for orthotics and prosthetics (O & P) in Latin America, with approximately 2.5 million people in need of this type of care. IPRO 309 was started in the spring of 2006 with the goal of helping to make this type of care more readily available. However, there are only 50 certified, and 1500 uncertified, O & P practitioners in Latin America. In order to become a certified practitioner, a student must graduate from an ISPO accredited program. Unfortunately, there is currently only one ISPO accredited program in existence in Latin America, along with several other programs that are not ISPO accredited. In October of 2004, Centro Don Bosco (Bogotá, Colombia), Don Bosco University (San Salvador, El Salvador), and the Laboratorio Gilete (Bogotá, Colombia) signed an agreement to establish the first accredited O & P education program in Colombia. Since then, Centro Don Bosco has allotted 3,500 square feet of space for the thriving faculty, classrooms, manufacturing training, and vocational workspace that are necessary for an ISPO accredited program. There are three levels of accreditation according to ISPO standards. Category III involves the design and manufacturing of orthotic and prosthetic devices, Category II includes the fabrication of the devices as well as direct patient care, and Category I includes production, treatment for patients, and research and development. The equivalent to ISPO in the United States is the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC). Because it is independent from the ISPO, the ABC standards of accreditation will need to be taken into account in order to carefully cross cultural and national boundaries.

The coating apparatus includes an encapsulation chamber enclosing a two-layer water-oil system for coating each islet cell with an aqueous polymeric coat. Islets together with an aqueous polymer solution are fed by a feed device that utilizes the principle of hydrodynamic focusing in order to ensure encapsulation of individual islets. The polymer in the aqueous coat is subsequently crosslinked by being exposed to laser light to produce structurally stable microcapsules of controllable thickness of the order of tens of microns. Encapsulated islets are removed from the encapsulation chamber by a valveless pump and recovered by filtration or centrifugation.

Show moreWe are providing a consultation to the sponsor, the IIT Visual Prosthesis Team, on how to proceed with preparation for human implantation of their intracortical visual prosthesis, which will be accomplished by researching different aspects and requirements for said implantation with an emphasis on subject perspective and selection. The device itself consists of electrode modules implanted in the visual cortex of individuals with blindness. By inducing a current in the modules, the volunteer would potentially perceive phosphenes, or light perceptions similar to camera flash afterimages, which could possibly form functional vision. Students will design and construct a steel bridge based on specifications provided by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). For design analysis, a computer program such as SAP 2000 may be used. After the design is finalized, students will develop shop drawings of the bridge and connection details using AUTOCAD. Fabrication of the bridge is based on theses drawings. The team will participate in a competition held on campus of a university in the Great Lakes region and judged based on AISC criteria. A team that competes successfully can benefit from students from several disciplines beyond civil engineering since there are significant tasks involving marketing, fundraising,preparing documentation, and organizing and delivering a compelling presentation.
