Show moreThe team will assist an independent inventor, Mr. Julius Jones, Jr., in developing his idea for a computer game that could help wheelchair users improve their hand-eye coordination and reflexes, and which would be enjoyable, interesting, and motivating for them to play. In exploring design ideas, for the game, the team will have an opportunity to meet and confer with wheelchair bound students who this past summer successfully completed a path-breaking hike on a rugged trail in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (New York Times, August 12, 2000, p. A1). The IPRO team will work on developing computer animation models of possible scenarios for the game. This IPRO combines analysis of needs and interests of mobility-impaired individuals from perspectives of the human and social sciences (psychology, sociology, etc.) with developing ideas about how to address those needs in a meaningful way through a computer game (design, electrical and computer engineering, computer science, etc.)

Show moreCalamos Investments provides professional money management services to major corporations, public and private institutions, pension funds, insurance companies and individuals and is an investment advisor to open-end and closed-end funds. The company was founded in 1977 by John Calamos. The company’s cornerstone strategy is risk management. Calamos Investments underwent rapid growth, from managing $5 billion in assets in 1999 to over $45 in 2006. During this period, a lot of the personal touch that permeated the interaction between clients and the company’s leadership was lost. The number of clients grew too quickly. A high level of personal interaction between John Calamos and its core investors became difficult to attain. The IPRO 303 team attempted to digitally leverage John Calamos by researching and piloting new methods of customer interaction utilizing digital communication technologies.

Show moreA Summer 2003 EnPRO team after reviewing the work done by previous IPRO teams and listening to wishes of both Professor Ladenson and Mr. Julius Jones, Jr., a Chicago independent inventor, decided that the Avoidatrak IPRO needed a new and fixed direction. That direction was that the collision avoidance game should incorporate a positive depiction of the abilities of disabled individuals in the form of a wheelchair basketball computer game. The purpose of this Summer 2004 IPRO was to do preliminary research and discover useful contacts for a Fall IPRO to begin designing Avoidatrak. Specifically, our goal was to generate a document that might be useful to the Fall IPRO team in understanding what the Avoidatrak game should and should not contain. In order to accomplish this goal, the IPRO team divided itself into two preliminary teams. Team 1 focused on the organizational and meaning that the game should incorporate, namely focusing on what disabled basketball players thought of the game and ways to make it an appealing and uplifting experience. Focus was also placed on the structure of the game, i.e. the level it is played at (locally, nationwide, international). Team 2 focused primarily on the actual game rules, strategies, and technicalities. Part of the research required was to discover what things set apart wheelchair basketball from able-bodied basketball. A consequence of coming up with rules and game play was that team 2 also contemplated various methods of interacting with the game through standard and widely available controllers.

Show moreWe would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced signal processing from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released last year. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage.

Show moreLocated in Oakbrook, IL the architects and engineers of IPRO 315 will design a 22 story hotel. Together architects and engineers will modify and re analyze a structure created by pervious designers, and select any new materials for construction. In creating the hotel students will be responsible for the structural analysis of columns, beams, foundation, steel, and concrete design required to insure all serviceability requirements. The students will be required to follow the 2006 International Building Code, and secure the safety of all possible occupants. Management, leadership, ethics, and teamwork will be an integral part of building a large scale structure as students learn to work together on a “real life” project.

Show moreThe trait of perfectionism is a psychological factor linked with the development of disordered eating, though the relation is unclear with some studies pointing to perfectionism as a predictor of eating disorder symptoms, while other studies have failed to find a statistically significant association. These discrepant findings suggest a need for understanding other factors that could be impacting the association. Research has suggested that individuals with eating disorders perform better than controls on knowledge of sources of nutrients and that while individuals with eating disorders spend more time reading about nutrition, this knowledge tends to be selective and skewed towards the aspects that maintain the eating disorder. The current study aimed to investigate the role of nutrition knowledge as a factor that may significantly influence the association between perfectionism and disordered eating attitudes. College women (N=122) completed several questionnaires related to disordered eating, nutrition knowledge, and perfectionism. The main research questions were: 1) whether perfectionism was related to disordered eating attitudes, 2) whether nutrition knowledge was related to disordered eating attitudes, and 3) whether nutrition knowledge moderated the relation between perfectionism and disordered eating attitudes. Results supported a positive association between perfectionism and disordered eating attitudes, in line with previous research. Despite a non-significant association between nutrition knowledge and disordered eating attitudes, there was found to be trend level significance (p<.07) for one moderation model. Specifically, the model assessing overall body dissatisfaction accounted for 33.34% of the variance, with a significant main effect for the level of perfectionism, suggesting the greater the degree of perfectionism traits, the greater the level of body dissatisfaction. While more research is needed to further develop an understanding of the link between perfectionism and disordered eating, nutrition knowledge is one possible avenue to explore in order to develop more effective prevention and intervention efforts.

Show moreThis article examines the relationship between specific construction project characteristics and the degree and speed that the foremen are able to improvise in response to disruptive events on the jobsite. Specifically, characteristics such as the number of crew members working under the supervision of a foreman, the occupancy status of the project (i.e., occupied or unoccupied) during construction, the stage of completion of the project, and the levels of turbulence, time pressure, cooperation, collaboration, and organization, were examined. Using a multilevel regression modeling approach, an analysis of 244 disruptions reported by 50 foremen was conducted to determine whether the construction project characteristics could predict more or less improvisation and faster or slower improvisation by the foreman. The findings indicate that on construction projects that are rated by the foremen as more organized, the foremen can make more modest improvised decisions to resolve a disruption, but that on construction projects that were rated by the foremen as more collaborative (i.e., involved joint decision-making), a greater degree of improvisation was deployed. In addition, it was found that on sites that were rated by the foremen as more cooperative (i.e., involved greater willingness to help each other), the foremen required more time to improvise their decisions.
