Show moreThis EnPRO project is the first of several designed to position IIT for a competitive proposal entry in 2009 for the Solar Decathlon 2011 competition. The Solar Decathlon is a competition in which 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. The Solar Decathlon is also an event to which the public is invited to observe the powerful combination of solar energy, energy efficiency, and the best in home design. This year the event will take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. October 12 - 20. The team houses are open for touring everyday except Wednesday, October 17, when they will close for competition purposes. An overall winner is announced on Friday, October 19 at 2 p.m. Teams of college students design a solar house, knowing from the outset that it must be powered entirely by the sun. In a quest to stretch every last watt of electricity that's generated by the solar panels on their roofs, the students absorb the lesson that energy is a precious commodity. They strive to innovate, using high-tech materials and design elements in ingenious ways. Along the way, the students learn how to raise funds and communicate about team activities. They collect supplies and talk to contractors. They build their solar houses, learning as they go. The 20 teams transport their solar houses to the competition site on the National Mall and virtually rebuild them in the solar village. Teams assemble their houses, and then the active phase of the Solar Decathlon begins with an opening ceremony for students, media, and invited guests. The teams compete in contests, and even though this part of the Solar Decathlon gets the most attention, the students really win the competition through the many months of fundraising, planning, designing, analyzing, redesigning, and finally building and improving their homes. The public is invited to tour the solar homes and event exhibits during much of the competition.

Show moreThe IIT IPRO 370 Crisis Management and Security Program (CMS) is in its fourth stage of development. The current goal is to further develop the capabilities of our web based program that can be used by organizations to assist when determining how well their crisis management plans stand up to different methodologies, assessments, and scenarios during the testing process. Also to start marketing our web site to attract a community of many users to assist in the growth of the CMS program. The initial grant for this project was funded by the Homeland Security Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center. Ms. Irene Rozansky, CEO and founder of R&A Crisis Management Services Inc. will be our sponsor to ensure that we develop a program able to test existing crisis management plans for companies, organizations, and individuals who lack a response ready approach in times of crisis.

Show moreIt is our objective to create a medium in which to combine the need of proficient web developers for university projects/ jobs as well as others looking for similar services outside of the university, with IIT students looking to gain experience as well as payment, whether through class credits or through wages. We plan to create a business model of a consulting firm that seeks out clients, as well as having clients brought to the firm, realize their needs, create a design document of their proposed website, then seek out the students with the capabilities matching the clients needs and “hire” them for the job, all the while maintaining that the quality of the student’s work will be sufficient to the client and therefore sufficient for our consulting firm. The start up companies/clients we gain will receive knowledge, expertise, and fresh ideas for a much needed website for their company/project. On the other hand the students will receive real-life experience working for a client in a certain timetable, with a standardized set of guidelines while also receiving some form of compensation.

Show moreThe plan for this IPRO is to develop a design for a large scale parking garage that can accommodate about 500 cars. The objective of this project is to develop a design that goes beyond the standard parking systems used today. Rather, the attempt is to have a design which is more representative of “parking garages of future.” And as such, such features as quick handling of incoming and outgoing cars, efficiency in storage and aesthetics are considered in design. The building will be completely self-sufficient and will have to incorporate the architecture of the various buildings on campus. The design could have separate entrance and exit ramp towers, ramps incorporated with parking, or the futuristic design may be automated. An automated system will include a vehicle elevator of lift system to move the vehicle so the driver does not have to. The structure could be built with reinforced concrete or steel. The design will also include accessibility following the requirements set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Show moreeyeCan seeks to develop and prototype assistive devices that will enable the visually impaired to exercise independently. Initially, our efforts have been devoted to developing a device that will allow such individuals to swim independently which from a sighted person‟s perspective might not be perceived as an issue. From research we have found this not to be the case, for the visually impaired it‟s very difficult to swim without causing harm to themselves. With our product eyeSwim, we hope to improve the quality of life for visually impaired individuals by providing them with opportunity to exercise safely. Currently, eyeCan is in the process of researching other activities i.e. running, biking, climbing which may prove to be another opportunity for expanding the business‟ focus.

Show moreGenetically modified crops have come to play an increasingly large role in our daily lives. Unfortunately these crops remain a mystery to much of the general population. For some, ideas about GM crops are exciting and represent hope for new potential in science and agriculture, for others they represent potential danger, and for others there are simply many unanswered questions. Our goal this semester will be to create a new source of information about GM products and to provide information that will answer the many questions we all have about this important subject. To do this, our objectives will be to: 1. Collect background information in an unbiased and comprehensive manner about laws and regulations regarding genetically modified crops. 2. Gather information about public opinion concerning GM crops. 3. Present facts about the processes and technologies that are used in this industry. 4. Create a database of known genetically modified crops, potential allergens, and traits in order to provide future IPRO’s with a foundation of knowledge concerning GM crops.

Show moreSpring semester 2007, the Manhattan Group came to IIT seeking advice regarding the improvement of their paper shredder. The paper shredders are manufactured in China and sold across the world, including the United States, under the Royal brand name. Each year, over a million paper shredders are sold. Consumers want paper shredders that are quiet and long lasting and are available at the lowest possible price. The Manhattan Group has asked us once again, the students of IPRO 321 and Professor Maurer, for the fourth straight semester to seek potential methods and problems in their shredder. These include improving the sound reduction, the gear optimization, and other features. The MMAE lab and machine lab will be used extensively for gear, sound, and material testing and design. Software resources, sound measuring equipment, and EE equipment will be used as well. Potential legal and/or ethical issues will involve patents and idea ownership. Since this a sponsored IPRO, all discoveries will be property of Mr. Seth Lewis and the Manhattan Group. This potentially could be an issue where this IPRO will be unable to provide necessary information to the IPRO office regarding work and progress due to ethics.
