Show moreIt is our objective to create a medium in which to combine the need of proficient web developers for university projects/ jobs as well as others looking for similar services outside of the university, with IIT students looking to gain experience as well as payment, whether through class credits or through wages. We plan to create a business model of a consulting firm that seeks out clients, as well as having clients brought to the firm, realize their needs, create a design document of their proposed website, then seek out the students with the capabilities matching the clients needs and “hire” them for the job, all the while maintaining that the quality of the student’s work will be sufficient to the client and therefore sufficient for our consulting firm. The start up companies/clients we gain will receive knowledge, expertise, and fresh ideas for a much needed website for their company/project. On the other hand the students will receive real-life experience working for a client in a certain timetable, with a standardized set of guidelines while also receiving some form of compensation.

Show moreThe photovoltaic/hydrogen hybrid energy system IPRO was started eight years ago. A group of students with their faculty advisor began a semester to investigate the use of solar energy to power an electric sign. Since that time, a significant amount of progress has been made. The project progressed from the design phase to the laboratory phase. Once functioning, it was transferred to the roof of the Co-Gen plant on the IIT main campus. During this phase of the project, Phase I, a photovoltaic system was set up that included several solar panels on the roof. Also, a large LED sign was installed on the roof. An array of power management devices were set up at the project site inside the Co-Gen plant. Phase II of the project was planned in order to incorporate an electrolyzer and fuel cell as an energy back up system in conjunction with the PV system. Although these components exist at the work site, they are not integrated into the complete system and are merely there to demonstrate using hydrogen to power an electric load.

Show moreThere are several types of framing that can be used on a greenhouse. The frames are made of wood, galvanized steel, or aluminum. Build-it-yourself greenhouse plans are usually for structures with wood or metal pipe frames. Plastic pipe materials generally are inadequate to meet snow and wind load requirements. Frames can be covered with glass, rigid fiberglass, rigid double-wall plastics, or plastic film. All have advantages and disadvantages. Each of these materials should be considered--it pays to shop around for ideas.

Show moreIn this thesis, we develop efficient adaptive rescaling schemes to investigate interface instabilities associated with moving interface problems. The idea of rescaling is to map the current time-space onto a new time-space frame such that the interfaces evolve at a chosen speed in the new frame. We couple the rescaling idea with boundary integral method to demonstrate the efficiency of the rescaling idea, though it can be applied to Cartesian-grid based method in general. As an example, we use the Hele-Shaw problem to examine the efficiency of the rescaling scheme. First, we apply the rescaling scheme to a slowly expanding interface. In the new frame, the evolution is dramatically accelerated, while the underlying physics remains unchanged. In particular, at long times numerical results reveal that there exist nonlinear, stable, self-similarly evolving morphologies. The rescaling idea can also be used to simulate the fast shrinking interface, e.g. the Hele-Shaw problem with a time dependent gap. In this case, the rescaling scheme slows down the interface evolution in the new frame to remove the severe time step constraint that makes the long-time simulations prohibitive. Finally, we study an analytical solution to the stability of the interface of the Hele-Shaw problem, assuming a small surface tension under a time dependent flux Q(t). Following [116, 109], we find the motions of daughter singularity ζd and simple singularity ζ0 do not depend on the flux Q(t). We also find a criterion to identify the relation between ζ0 and ζd.

Show moreDistributed computing has become quintessential in the business world for its ability to connect people with information and resources. Two available technologies that provide distributed computing are Microsoft’s .NET and Sun’s J2EE. The objective of this Interprofessional Project is threefold: 1) to study both technologies, 2) to develop and analyze a list of criteria that are important to Bank One and how they develop software, and 3) to rate each criteria, which will help Bank One make an informed technology choice between .NET and J2EE, when reengineering legacy systems. At a high level, there are significant differences between these technologies. The .NET environment offers a host of programming languages and an integrated development environment. However, applications developed in .NET are limited to running on a Microsoft Operating System. J2EE offers one language, Java, but a wide selection of development tools. Applications developed in J2EE may run on several different operating systems. Bank One will have both .NET and J2EE available for development and by using Web Services they will be able to have separate modules communicate with each other.

Show moreThe main problem the IPRO addressed was that of insider misuse. Contrary to popular belief, the largest threat facing companies on a technology level is not intrusion, but rather insider misuse. Insider misuse is a relatively new area of research in the field of Computer Science, which is one of the reasons it’s a relatively unheard of problem. In addition to that, due to intense media bias towards intrusion, people are blissfully unaware of the problem of insider misuse. Ethically, it’s an interesting problem. Companies already closely monitor user activity, but any infringement on perceived privacy in the workplace generally sends everyone flustering left and right. The IPRO had to personally evaluate if we felt the necessary invasion of privacy was worth the overall result which is a more secure and profitable business. Companies can decide which approach they would like to take, but it’s hard to believe that a company would choose one that wouldn’t help to prevent a loss of money.

Show moreHealth care is a complex, highly constrained, high stakes environment that relies heavily on information. The field of medical informatics has evolved to create software solutions that are intended to support the organization, management and use of health care information. Medical informatics applications include patient care, teaching, research and health care administration from the patient record up through unit, departmental and hospital schedules and reports. Such products and systems typically seek to make the most of current technology. However, their implementation frequently shows little regard for the way people work. This IPRO will scope the field of medical informatics. This will call on team members to: (a) review reports, articles and products to describe the current state of the art; (b) pose crucial questions regarding met and unmet needs; and (c) reach conclusions regarding the future of health care and address the implications for how informatics needs to evolve. Information technology in health care spans all departments of the organization. Team members will need to grasp the complex relationships among all health care departments and disciplines. This will require an awareness of medical practice, law, business, human behavior, software and information systems. The project will be challenging for any IIT undergraduate or graduate student. Degree areas that are expected to have a particular interest in this project include computer science, psychology, design, and business.

Show moreThere exists a strong demand for orthotics and prosthetics (O & P) in Latin America, with approximately 2.5 million people in need of this type of care. IPRO 309 was started in the spring of 2006 with the goal of helping to make this type of care more readily available. However, there are only 50 certified, and 1500 uncertified, O & P practitioners in Latin America. In order to become a certified practitioner, a student must graduate from an ISPO accredited program. Unfortunately, there is currently only one ISPO accredited program in existence in Latin America, along with several other programs that are not ISPO accredited. In October of 2004, Centro Don Bosco (Bogotá, Colombia), Don Bosco University (San Salvador, El Salvador), and the Laboratorio Gilete (Bogotá, Colombia) signed an agreement to establish the first accredited O & P education program in Colombia. Since then, Centro Don Bosco has allotted 3,500 square feet of space for the thriving faculty, classrooms, manufacturing training, and vocational workspace that are necessary for an ISPO accredited program. There are three levels of accreditation according to ISPO standards. Category III involves the design and manufacturing of orthotic and prosthetic devices, Category II includes the fabrication of the devices as well as direct patient care, and Category I includes production, treatment for patients, and research and development. The equivalent to ISPO in the United States is the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC). Because it is independent from the ISPO, the ABC standards of accreditation will need to be taken into account in order to carefully cross cultural and national boundaries.
