Show moreIPRO 344 investigated methods for safe, low-cost community gardening in the urban setting. Most community gardens within large cities are sited in vacant lots that have been previously built upon. When the structures that once occupied these sites were demolished, the debris filled the basements of the structures, and was then covered by a shallow layer of nutrient poor dirt. The resulting vacant lots pose two problems for community gardening. First, the ground becomes tough and nearly impossible to manually prepare for gardening purposes. Second, the presence of lead and mercury from the paint and other construction materials has been incorporated into the soil, which can be harmful when transferred into plants which are then ingested. Since most community gardens in low-income neighborhoods do provide food, it became the aim of IPRO 344 to inexpensively grow plants which would be safe to eat in an urban community garden.

Show moreFabrication Laboratories (Fab Labs) were started as a community outreach program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to provide digital fabrication tools for rapid prototyping to the general public. The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago (MSI) has partnered with this IPRO to further develop their existing Fab Lab. IPRO 333 has been assigned the task of working with the Fab Lab administrators to design methodologies for furthering the use of the laboratory and determining its end goals for both the museum and the community. Once these goals are established, we will support them with a list of projects that we will create and execute. By working with the lab directors to broaden the possible uses of the lab, we hope to encourage hands-on learning in local schools. This will promote membership at MSI and involve the community in science and technology programs and education. To accomplish this, we have broken into two teams, each of which will focus on a different audience. The first team will be responsible for designing and creating programs for more advanced and knowledgeable users of the equipment specific to the Fab Lab, such as the students enrolled in the Science Achievers program as well as museum members; the second team will be responsible for designing and implementing programs for less advanced users with more constrained timeframes, such as visiting families or groups of school children.

Show moreA Fall 2002 EnPRO Team created a demonstration version of a computer game that puts you in control of a wheelchair. They also explored some of the business issues associated with this game concept. The aim of this game will be to help hone wheelchair-maneuvering skills for training and entertaining. With the simulation of such wheelchair activities as racing, basketball and other recreational activities, Avoidatrak will be a challenging and entertaining game for all.The National Easter Seal Society, the YMCA, special education teachers and others are interested in the results of this project. The idea is to eventually develop a combination computer game and training tool to meet the needs of children and others with disabilities that is based on a concept of collision avoidance conceived by Mr. Julius Jones, Jr., a Chicago independent inventor. This concept responds to the need for a simulation that helps children become familiar with how to use a wheelchair as well as offers an entertainment experience for those confined to wheelchairs or their friends.

Show more1. Determine the amount of force to cut 6, 8, 10 sheets of 20 lb paper, taking into account the width and length of the shred. Once the amount of force is determined, develop a computer simulation model that can predict the amount of force required based upon the following variable inputs: number of sheets, shred width, and shred length. 2. Through computer simulation or prototype development, design an efficient gear train that optimizes the number of gears and minimizes the motor size based upon data obtained from previous semester’s data. The goal is to develop and simulate a gear train that can withstand 500 cycles at maximum sheet capacity. 3. Develop acoustical sound dampeners or “tune” the shredder to reduce the amount of noise created during the shredding process, leveraging information obtained from previous semesters’ data. The goal is to reduce the noise output by 10 decibels

Show moreIPRO 349 2.1 is focused on creating a prototype of a map reporting component that will be used as an addition to the ComArch Report Book software. The Report Book is a bundle of software used for data analysis that is not built in Excel. ComArch Report Books are used to analyze transactional data, as well as profit control data. For example, it interprets data collected from transactions at stores through the register data gathered during the day, but can also help companies analyze why profit margins are different in different regions

Show moredistribution operation which will aid companies seeking to outsource logistics operations. However, the team’s main objective is to add a Request for Proposal tool to the existing model allowing companies to determine the effectiveness of outsourcing different aspects of warehouse operations. This team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically warehouse logistics pricing. For the spring semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Analyze existing model (Shipping, Manufacturing, Transportation, etc.) in terms of being user-friendly and effectiveness at accurately predicting cost versus revenue and whether the operations input should be outsourced. Refine the current model given the suggestions of a surveyed group, not differentiating the contributions of the IPRO students from the software users. Research costs associated with logistic processes. Develop a multi-purpose activity outsourcing tool for common use called “Request for Proposal”.

Show moreThe direction IPro 307 “Intermodal Container Transport” is taking for the 2008 semester is geared toward alternative energy technologies as well as expansion of the capacity and efficiency of a designated rail transfer yard. The selected exploration site is the Norfolk Southern rail transfer yard at 47th street near the Dan Ryan Expressway. Since there is a large amount of on-site equipment (Mi-Jack side loaders, cranes, and yard hostlers), the possibility of introducing alternative fuel technologies exists and can provide a cleaner and more cost-effective solution to air pollution and rising fuel costs. The group will be focusing efforts on using wind power in parallel with compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel, as well as designing innovative ways to improve yard capacity and efficiency. The ultimate goal of this IPro is to develop a plan to increase yard efficiency and output, while at the same time incorporating green technology as an alternative energy source for the facility equipment.

Show moreMany people around the world are in need of orthotic and/or prosthetic care due to pathologies that cannot be effectively treated any other way. There is a great need for establishing and sustaining educational opportunities. Our IPRO focuses on the population of South America, and more specifically Colombia. Our goal is to provide them with educational information to support their existing Orthotic and Prosthetic (O&P) Technician training program at Centro don Bosco in Bogotá. We will continue the work of previous IPROs by creating modules that concentrate on O&P solutions to pathologies that occur on different areas of the body, specifically upper limb, spine, and lower limb. This semester we will also test the effectiveness of our educational modules by using the modules exclusively to fabricate an actual orthotic device. Our modules will also be translated to Spanish for the audience in Colombia.

Show moreIPRO 330 has one clear and main purpose: to increase high school student interest in Science and Mathematics in Chicago Public Schools. This is a very lofty and broad goal, so IPRO 330 has chosen to use the Chicago Public School Science Fair program as a vehicle to achieve this purpose. IPRO 330 is a continuing IPRO, meaning that we have a foundation and a base of work that has already been accomplished. As a result, one of the project goals of this team will be to obtain in-depth feedback from professionals within IIT, from Chicago Public Schools, and certainly from other professional education venues as well. Specifically, we will be looking to obtain feedback from the three most involved sources in high school students’ lives: students, teachers, and parents. This may be the most vital part of our project, because we want to make sure that our projects and guides are of high quality and high interest to high school students. IPRO 330 has an existing bank of Science Fair projects and guides which are located on the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu. In an effort to make our website more effective and more appealing, we will have team goals to create more Science Fair projects, and guides which will target areas that Chicago Public High School Students typically have trouble addressing, such as data analysis. We feel like the guides are a way to really implement more mathematics into the Science Fair program as a whole. In addition, there will be a group of students in our IPRO focused on improving the website and implementing new projects. IPRO 330 will address these objectives by first having all members, including faculty advisors, attend and judge a Chicago Public School Science Fair. This will allow everyone working on this project to get a better sense of what we are working on, make some contacts with teachers and Science Fair Coordinators, and even get feedback from students who used the website as a resource for their project. After this initial phase, the group will break up into three teams, an infrastructure team, a communication team, and a project and guides team. In these sub teams, IPRO 330 will be able to more effectively deal with more specific issues that arise
