Show moreDuring the summer 2009 semester, IPRO 358 plans to develop mock-ups of the Delta Hook Technology (DHT) and to lay the foundation for a business model for Sparrowhawk, LLC, an early stage company. Sparrowhawk has investigated the concept for an innovative fishing hook that is not currently on the market or ready to be launched. The IPRO team will work together to approach the process of designing mock-ups of the Delta Hook Technology (DHT), testing the mock-ups, and determining measures that can be taken to improve the DHT. Subsequent mock-ups will continue to improve based on results of the product testing. Simultaneously, we will do market research in order to identify the target market, determine price points, and develop marketing strategies for DHT.

Show moreThis IPRO is designed to support the Department of Homeland Security national security initiatives as outlined by the United States Government. The goal is to design a project that supports homeland security compliance guidelines. For example, depending upon interests of the group, a software program could be developed containing a matrix of risk and preventive factors which could be used to assess how well an organization meets Homeland Security Guidelines. Items might involve public policy, computer technology, facilities, transportation, communications, EPA, security, water and air. The need to protect our facilities and people in the Chicago area given recent terrorist activities and the frequent, heightened state of alerts is critical. A well-defined homeland security project can help in contributing to the initiative of establishing homeland readiness. This hands-on project will afford students the opportunity to research an apply concepts of transportation, mechanical, electrical, power, economics, and especially computer technology and engineering to homeland security.

Show moreThe Swyne Project‟s objective is to extend the capabilities of the semantic search engine developed in the previous semester of this particular IPRO project. Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results.

Show moreThe objective of this IPRO subteam is the improvement of the importation of data to CDN XL in small and medium enterprises sector. This subteam is working toward the problem of improving the way data is imported from customer to CDN XL (an ERP system). The methodology to be employed is the agile methodology. The expected result of this project is a preliminary software system for importing data from Excel or other heterogeneous files to CDN XL. The goal of the team’s project is to develop a program to for the importation of data from customers to be imported into the CDN XL system to be used by the deployers. The deliverables at the end of the project will be a template for customers, program to extract the data. The team will examine the process of importing the data to develop a program that is generic enough to import different types of data. This project plan is separated into the objective section, where the objective of the subteam is fully explained. In the background section, the background of the project and sponsor are detailed. Also, a diagram of how the CDN XL system works is included. Furthermore, the technology used and possible ethical issues are addressed. The third section describes the methodology being used. The way documentation of work is also addressed in this section. In addition, the risk management and quality assurance will be addressed in this section. The expected results are explained in the fourth section – the form it is in as well as potential products that might arise from this project. In the sixth section, the tasks, duration of each task and milestones are included. The team members are introduced in the seventh section. Finally, in the last section, the designation of roles – what each team member is responsible for – is detailed.

Once the amount of force is determined, develop a computer simulation model that can predict the amount of force required based upon the following variable inputs: number of sheets, shred width, and shred length. 2. Through computer simulation or prototype development, design an efficient gear train that optimizes the number of gears and minimizes the motor size based upon data obtained from previous semester’s data. The goal is to develop and simulate a gear train that can withstand 500 cycles at maximum sheet capacity. 3. Develop acoustical sound dampeners or “tune” the shredder to reduce the amount of noise created during the shredding process, leveraging information obtained from previous semesters’ data. The goal is to reduce the noise output by 10 decibels

This educational module will be broken down into two major components. First, the Zoo education staff and animal researchers need help in developing a guided inquiry process that will assist users in identifying animals. By organizing the hierarchical structure of information provided by the Zoo, and coupling this with the tools available on the iPhone, IPRO 318 seeks to design an efficient, educational, and entertaining means of utilizing modern technology to identify animals in the Zoo and beyond.

Show moreIPRO 303 is working on the user interface for SmartSignal Corporation’s software which predicts equipment failures in coal fired power plants. We are now in the third stage of the project. We are to deliver the user interface of the software based on the studies done by two previous semesters. SmartSignal suggested that we also consider specific elements of the software such as the clear presentation of developing fault information, and the efficient communication system between users. An appropriate UI will utilize SmartSignal’s predictive analysis software to provide an efficient and clear means for power plant personnel to: · Predict or identify equipment faults · Understand the predicted faults · Prioritize the disposition of the predicted faults or highlight urgent or important faults · Reduce the need for plant personnel to have many years of experience or “institutional knowledge” The ultimate goal of this project is to introduce an innovative approach to the user interface which SmartSignal can use for predicting equipment failures in coal fire power plants. To realize this, we set these objectives. · Research and collect information relative to the User Interfaces [UI] from the first hand users of the software while examining the study done by the previous IPRO303. · Create the Requirements Document for the UI in light of the concerns expressed by SmartSignal and the results of research. · Generate several possible UIs based upon the Requirements Document stated above. · Select one of the Several UI for development of details and revise it based upon the input from SmartSignal. · Add details and finalize the design of the selected UI.

Show moreThe purpose of our team is to save lives and prevent accidents involving construction equipment damaging underground utilities. We seek to do this by introducing the Enhanced Vision System, or EVS. The goal then for this semester is to design and build this system for displaying the location of buried utilities to the operators of construction vehicles. This includes producing a proof-of-concept prototype as well as designing the final product that we would produce. As this project is not merely an IPRO, but also an EnPRO, we are also considering how to turn this idea into a successful business venture. To this end, we will be preforming research and creating a business plan.

This is a continuing project which saw limited success in the previous semester in that a functioning web site was constructed based on surveys of public school teachers but it saw very little use. This semester, the planned approach is to build on the research generated last semester by performing additional market research with teachers. Following that, IPRO 320 will rework much of the previous web site by refining some of the features, adding additional ones as the research indicates and improving the website in general, both functionally and aesthetically.

If Chicago is selected as the Host City it will face the enormous task of providing temporary housing for all Olympiad participants including athletes, coaches, organizers, and media reporters. Continuing in the vein of last semester’s IPRO, our IPRO is proposing an economical and environmentally friendly solution to this challenge. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are cluttering up shipping yards in the Chicago area and to convert them into low-cost housing units. With proper foresight, this challenge can become an opportunity for the I P R O 3 3 9 City to demonstrate an attitude of sustainability that can serve as a model for other cities around the world to follow suit. The intense media attention directed towards the Olympic Games could be channeled to showcase our commitment to environmentally and socially responsible actions.
