Show moreA method for detecting a mass density image of an object. An x-ray beam is transmitted through the object and a transmitted beam is emitted from the object. The transmitted beam is directed at an angle of incidence upon a crystal analyzer. A diffracted beam is emitted from the crystal analyzer onto a detector and digitized. A first image of the object is detected from the diffracted beam emitted from the crystal analyzer when positioned at a first angular position. A second image of the object is detected from the diffracted beam emitted from the crystal analyzer when positioned at a second angular position. A refraction image is obtained and a regularized mathematical inversion algorithm is applied to the refraction image to obtain a mass density image.

Show moreThe specific plan for our IPRO is construct a synthetic biological circuit, that is both novel, aesthetically pleasing and independent of the host organism. This is a first step toward implementing entirely synthetic organisms that can be designed to a specification. The target we have chosen is a synchronized biological oscillator, implemented in a vertebrate organism, the zebrafish. To produce an organism requires a wide variety of skills and tasks. Accordingly we have organized into subteams, each responsible for progress in some area, with an administrative sub team overseeing all the events.

Show moreThe overall goal of our IPRO team is to create a program for delivering orthotics and prosthetics that is sustainable. This will be accomplished by improving the quality of the product by increasing availability of funding, improving cost effectiveness of prosthetics, and promoting awareness of treatment available. Our IPRO team has divided the project into three separate subgroups: Business, Technical, and Impact.

Show moreA Summer 2003 EnPRO team after reviewing the work done by previous IPRO teams and listening to wishes of both Professor Ladenson and Mr. Julius Jones, Jr., a Chicago independent inventor, decided that the Avoidatrak IPRO needed a new and fixed direction. That direction was that the collision avoidance game should incorporate a positive depiction of the abilities of disabled individuals in the form of a wheelchair basketball computer game. The purpose of this Summer 2004 IPRO was to do preliminary research and discover useful contacts for a Fall IPRO to begin designing Avoidatrak. Specifically, our goal was to generate a document that might be useful to the Fall IPRO team in understanding what the Avoidatrak game should and should not contain. In order to accomplish this goal, the IPRO team divided itself into two preliminary teams. Team 1 focused on the organizational and meaning that the game should incorporate, namely focusing on what disabled basketball players thought of the game and ways to make it an appealing and uplifting experience. Focus was also placed on the structure of the game, i.e. the level it is played at (locally, nationwide, international). Team 2 focused primarily on the actual game rules, strategies, and technicalities. Part of the research required was to discover what things set apart wheelchair basketball from able-bodied basketball. A consequence of coming up with rules and game play was that team 2 also contemplated various methods of interacting with the game through standard and widely available controllers.

Show moreThe purpose of this project is the advancement in knowledge of, and applied practical solutions to the challenges of sustainability in regards to a very specialized area of water conservation. The harvesting of air conditioner condensate could potentially lead to the conservation of a great deal of both water and money. Pentair, a company specialized in providing water solutions, is interested in the technology to harvest the condensate from A/C in buildings, and is our sponsor. We aimed to create public awareness surrounding the potential non-potable use of air conditioner condensate through demonstration and presentation. The IPRO Team of Summer 2011 will advance the prior work by focusing upon building public awareness and working to change public policy. The Team will utilize social media promotional strategies/messages and implementation. The Team will also identify the practical and political barriers to main stream harvesting of condensate and develop action plans to overcome the barriers. The two activities of the Team will be to build public enthusiasm for condensate harvesting via social media and secondly to summarize all IPRO condensate efforts into a presentation with collateral materials and share it with organizations that have outreach missions of sustainability and conservation.

Show moreNAVTEQ, the sponsor of this project, is one of the largest digital mapping companies in the world. They are in a constant phase of self-improvement. Right now, NAVTEQ’s focus is on how to make their technology more pedestrian and community friendly. Our project has two main sections – 1. Target the majority of mobile device users, and give them an outlet to report any changes, mistakes or developments that have been overlooked by NAVTEQ. 2. Come up with a solution which enables the average map user – men and women ages 18-35, students and tourists – to address these alterations in a simple, hassle free way

Show moreThis IPRO team has the unique opportunity to recreate, from the original plans, a working replica of the first clinically successful artificial kidney. Designed, built, and implemented in 1942, Willem Kolff’s rotating drum was the first successful extra-corporeal medical technological device. It provided a successful technological reference point for subsequent development of dialysis devices. This device literally established the field of artificial organs. There are no working models in the Western Hemisphere. Two exist in Europe both in the Netherlands.

Show moreIPRO 330 has one clear and main purpose: to increase high school student interest in Science and Mathematics in Chicago Public Schools. This is a very lofty and broad goal, so IPRO 330 has chosen to use the Chicago Public School Science Fair program as a vehicle to achieve this purpose. IPRO 330 is a continuing IPRO, meaning that we have a foundation and a base of work that has already been accomplished. As a result, one of the project goals of this team will be to obtain in-depth feedback from professionals within IIT, from Chicago Public Schools, and certainly from other professional education venues as well. Specifically, we will be looking to obtain feedback from the three most involved sources in high school students’ lives: students, teachers, and parents. This may be the most vital part of our project, because we want to make sure that our projects and guides are of high quality and high interest to high school students. IPRO 330 has an existing bank of Science Fair projects and guides which are located on the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu. In an effort to make our website more effective and more appealing, we will have team goals to create more Science Fair projects, and guides which will target areas that Chicago Public High School Students typically have trouble addressing, such as data analysis. We feel like the guides are a way to really implement more mathematics into the Science Fair program as a whole. In addition, there will be a group of students in our IPRO focused on improving the website and implementing new projects. IPRO 330 will address these objectives by first having all members, including faculty advisors, attend and judge a Chicago Public School Science Fair. This will allow everyone working on this project to get a better sense of what we are working on, make some contacts with teachers and Science Fair Coordinators, and even get feedback from students who used the website as a resource for their project. After this initial phase, the group will break up into three teams, an infrastructure team, a communication team, and a project and guides team. In these sub teams, IPRO 330 will be able to more effectively deal with more specific issues that arise
