Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities and grounds. Three major spaces currently hold latent potential at the school: the abandoned convent/dormitory, library and inner courtyards, used correctly they can become a catalyst for positive change. It is proposed that the dormitory be torn down, in its place a “community center” would be constructed. The space will service extracurricular activities at the school, public outreach programs (i.e. youth groups, cub/girl scouts, etc.), club rooms and a new space for library books storage and usage. The second space being addressed is the library, given its current isolated position the space would be transformed into a communication and media center equipped with the technology necessary for worldwide communication. The third space addressed is the inner courtyards of the building. With six dispersed throughout the school grounds, they can become an active part of the recreational aspect of the school’s environment: places of social interaction, outdoor classrooms, etc. Additionally, the greening techniques proposed for the school’s facilities will include methods for efficiency improvement, education and school promotion.

Show moreThe construction of a photon collider has been urged, in order to study the properties of the Higgs boson and electroweak symmetry breaking. It would also provide unique possibilities for measurement of fusion to probe the hadronic structure of the photon. One scheme of design for the photon collider is a linear collider. A study shows that resolved photons contribute about 15% of the cross section to Higgs production with a mass of 120 GeV, but estimates of the resolved photon structure have so far varied greatly. Therefore, resolved photon structure is important to measure. This thesis focuses on the determination of the uncertainties of the cross section of bb production for better understanding of resolved photon structure. The principles of a photon collider are reviewed. In this thesis, the simulation tools for the simulation of the cross section of ! bb collision are developed. After that, the method for determination of the uncertainties of cross section is described. A new set of PDFs to explore these uncertainties is produced. The result of the simulation of the cross section and the calculation for the uncertainties of the cross section is presented and discussed in detailed.

Show moreElectric storage provides a vehicle to store power for future use. It contributes to the grids in multiple aspects. For instance, electric storage is a more effective approach to provide electricity ancillary services than conventional methods. Additionally, electric storage, especially fast-responding units, allows owners to implement high-frequency power transactions in settings such as the 5-min real-time trading market. Such high-frequency power trades were limited in the past. However, as technology advances, the power markets have evolved. For instance, the California Independent System Operator now supports the 5-min real-time trading and the hourly day-ahead ancillary services bidding. Existing valuation models of electric storage were not designed to accommodate these recent market developments. To fill this gap, I focus on the fast-responding grid-level electric storage that provides both the real-time trading and the day-ahead ancillary services bidding. To evaluate such an asset, I propose a Monte Carlo Simulation-based valuation model. The foundation of my model is simulations of power prices. This study develops a new simulation model of electric prices. It is worth noting that, unlike existing models, my proposed simulation model captures the dependency of the real-time markets on the day-ahead markets. Upon such simulations, this study investigates the pricing and the application of electric storage at a 5-min granularity. Essentially, my model is a Dynamic Programming system with both endogenous variables (i.e., the State-of-Charge of electric storage) and exogenous variables (i.e., power prices). My first numerical example is the valuation of a fictitious 4MWh battery. Similarly, my second example evaluates the application of two units of 2MWh batteries. By comparing these two experiments, I investigate the issues related to battery configurations, such as the impacts of splitting storage capability on the valuation of electric storage.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO 341 is to assist Versatility Tool Works with the design, testing, and marketing of an industrial strength tool cabinet. Ideally, one or more of the drawers in the cabinet should be capable of holding 450 pounds of equipment, and have a lifespan of 20,000 cycles. (One (1) cycle is defined as one opening and closing of the drawer.) Extra features to include in the design of the cabinet will also be investigated to try to make the cabinet more marketable. However, it will be important to first determine what progress has been made thus far so that this semester’s design improvements can be better demonstrated.

Show moreThe IPRO 311 Team’s overall objective is to create a conceptual design and branding of IIT as an eco-friendly campus, promoting sustainability to students, faculty and visitors. IPRO 311 is sponsored by IIT Marketing and Communication Department which seeks to portray a message of the university’s accomplishments in the area of sustainability and future capabilities. Furthermore, this project is driven by the interests of two IIT trustees with an interest to enhance the visibility of the IIT Main Campus from the I-94 expressway and other challenging vantage points (US Cellular Field, Sears Tower, McCormick Place, 2016 Olympics venues, etc.) Disney Imagineering is project partner participating with the Team through brainstorming discussion assisting the Team in building the IIT Brand. Initially, the focus of the IPRO was the development of signage that could represent sustainability and be situated at a prominent location on campus visible to the public. After several class discussions, the vision of the IRPO broadened, to develop an overall campus sustainable conceptual design, incorporating signage as one of the elements. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable concepts. There are several interrelated objectives: (1) Build IIT brand awareness and campus visibility in ways that are aesthetically pleasing, exciting and memorable. (2) Create an eco-friendly, self-sustained project that promotes general awareness of activities within the university among students, staff, faculty and the community. (3) Play a leadership role in supporting Mayor Daley's vision for creating a ultra-green Chicago by 2020. (4) Create an IIT campus sustainability plan for future IPROs to build upon.

Show moreA passive mapping system employs an antenna or other sensing means having a receiving beam pattern which is scanned in azimuth while moving along a path relative to the area to be mapped. The received signal, after detection and other processing, is recorded on a moving record medium in such a manner that each emitting element in the mapped area generates a straight line of a certain intensity or contrast on the record medium with a slope corresponding to the emitting element range, and the position along the medium corresponding to the location of the antenna along the path. Subsequently, the record medium is processed to collapse or integrate each straight signal line into a point on a further record medium to produce a radiometric plan view map of the area.

Show moreIPRO 331, its team members, and all involved faculty are devoted to enhancing awareness in the community to the issues surrounding global warming. Our goal is to give PowerPoint presentations to several different audiences, especially today’s younger generations in elementary school, high school, and college, in order to both educate and interest people in these issues. Our presentations are meant to be objective – we want to present the facts about global warming research from credible sources. Additionally, with the help of our website and contacts, we hope to be another driving force in the sustainability movement and climate change research. Our purpose can be summed up in a quote included at the end of each of our presentations: “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” – Charles Darwin

Show moreIndia’s huge and growing population is putting severe strain on all of the country’s natural resources. Most water sources are used on a domestic, industrial and agricultural basis. The quality of the water used is presumed to be the major problem that the people face, but the real problem is the quantity of water supplied. Quite a few organizations have been engaged with supplying drinking water to the community, but still not enough to address the needs of all the different sectors of the community, especially irrigation. In order to increase the availability of water to the people, it is necessary that the people have alternative means of supply of water, and a strong sense of the value of water.

Show more1048 million gallons of water is used in Chicago everyday. Chicago replenishes almost none of it. Although there is no water shortage currently, many believe that water will be to the next century what oil is to this century: a huge commodity. Twenty percent of the world's potable water is contained in the Great Lakes. In order to be responsible consumers of this natural resource, Chicago is looking into different plans to return water to Lake Michigan. The purpose of Growing Water IPRO is to create a prototype of an Eco-boulevard on the IIT campus that will serve as an example of practices that could be implemented across the Chicago-land area to manage and naturally purify storm water and sewage water so it can be reintroduced to Lake Michigan. These Eco-boulevards will also serve as educational facilities to inform the community about the growing scarcity of water and how to conserve this precious resource.
