Documents are added to the job folder from various departments as the project circulates throughout the company. Once the project is completed, the job folder is filed into the company’s archives. To date, this has led to several problems for Abrasive-Form, Inc. As the company expands, they have to dedicate large portions of their offices to store old job folders. A lot of time is wasted as employees travel to and from storage to look up information from the old job folders. Furthermore, because there are several departments within the company that reference the job folders, they are often misplaced or lost. In addition, if there were a disaster, such as a fire, all the files would be permanently lost. In response to these problems, the IPRO 347 team has worked with Abrasive-Form, Inc. to develop an electronic content management system. Last semester, the IPRO team consulted Abrasive-Form, Inc. to determine the best possible solution for their problem. After initial consultation the team divided into subgroups to investigate possible digital content management solutions based on Abrasive Form, Inc.’s needs and wants. Four possible programs were presented to the company and, ultimately, the program SharePoint was selected. SharePoint was chosen because its features met the most of Abrasive Form, Inc.’s requirements. This semester’s job will be to create a fully working version of SharePoint from last semester’s prototype. In addition, this semester’s IPRO will also be responsible for full implementation of this working version on Abrasive-Form, Inc.’s servers and the creation of an instructional program and guide for the employees of Abrasive-Form, Inc so that the company may begin its transition to a paperless database by the end of the year.

Containers that travel short distances will be done via semi-trailer, whereas containers that have to travel cross country are loaded into locomotives and transported the Midwest for sub-distribution or the other coast for distribution. Why is intermodal transportation important? The efficiency in moving products is what makes Intermodal Transportation important. The more efficient a product is distributed the more money is saved, due to less time and less labor involved in the process. What is the scope of this IPRO? The scope of this IPRO is to provide a manifesto of good practices that will improve intermodal transportation to be environmentally conscious and friendly. The IPRO team will produce a book containing good practices in the design of an intermodal facility. The team will also implement the methods by producing a build-out. The team will also focus on the Clark Road bridge design from previous semester to help improve the commerciality of Gary, Indiana. There is a growing concern today to be more environmentally conscious and friendly. Cities like Chicago are introducing green roofs to help the environment by reducing carbon dioxide therefore lessening the green house effects. The challenge for this IPRO team is how we can improve intermodal yards while 3 keeping in mind the environmental and ethical issues. Some of the environmental issues the team is dealing with are noise, water, air and land quality. The ethical issues are the effect on the individual and the community of having an intermodal facility at your back door. The team will research and find solutions for these issues and write up a report to publish in the book.

Show moreInsulin is a hormone released by pancreatic islet cells that interacts with cells to increase their permeability to glucose. Diabetes is an illness that is becoming more prevalent around the world and is linked with either abnormal insulin production, or utilization or both in the body. Diabetes may be classified into two groups: Type 1 and Type 2 In an individual with Type 1 diabetes, the pancreatic ß cells that normally produce insulin are nonexistent as they have been destroyed due to autoimmune response. In an individual with Type 2 diabetes there is tissue-wide resistance to insulin and usually some impairment of ß cells as well. Therefore, although insulin production may be present its functionality is impaired. Type 1 diabetes is typically treated with frequent extraneous insulin injections, depending on the prevailing blood glucose levels of the individual; however, in order to determine the glucose levels individuals subject themselves to periodic finger pricks throughout the day which is often uncomfortable and stressful. Mechanical devices for insulin delivery, also known as “artificial pancreases”, are currently available in the marketplace. However, these devices are not only highly invasive and painful, but also must be sanitized frequently to prevent infections. As a result, they are inconvenient and many diabetic patients choose not to use them. The goal of IPRO 308 is to develop an automated, non-invasive artificial pancreas that will be capable of determining blood glucose levels and administering an appropriate amount of insulin into the blood stream while causing minimal discomfort to the individual.

Intermodal transportations are the use of multiple types of transportation such as ships, planes, locomotive and semi-trailers to transport goods in and out of the United States. An example of this would be the importation of goods from overseas that arrive in the United States via cargo ships. Distribution of these goods can vary depending on the distance the container needs to travel. Containers that travel short distances will be done via semi-trailer, whereas containers that have to travel cross country are loaded into locomotives and transported the Midwest for sub-distribution or the other coast for distribution. Why is intermodal transportation important? The efficiency in moving products is what makes Intermodal Transportation important. The more efficient a product is distributed the more money is saved, due to less time and less labor involved in the process. What is the scope of this IPRO? The scope of this IPRO is to provide a manifesto of good practices that will improve intermodal transportation to be environmentally conscious and friendly. The IPRO team will produce a book containing good practices in the design of an intermodal facility. The team will also implement the methods by producing a build-out. The team will also focus on the Clark Road bridge design from previous semester to help improve the commerciality of Gary, Indiana. There is a growing concern today to be more environmentally conscious and friendly. Cities like Chicago are introducing green roofs to help the environment by reducing carbon dioxide therefore lessening the green house effects. The challenge for this IPRO team is how we can improve intermodal yards while 3 keeping in mind the environmental and ethical issues. Some of the environmental issues the team is dealing with are noise, water, air and land quality. The ethical issues are the effect on the individual and the community of having an intermodal facility at your back door. The team will research and find solutions for these issues and write up a report to publish in the book.

Show moreThis work discuss the inventory creep phenomenon that occurs in production processes. Most production process use inventory to store their products for max- imizing profit. When planning and scheduling control methods were applied, these processes encountered this phenomenon at the end of the controlled horizon. We applied the economic model protective control on a production process example and demonstrate the effect the inventory creep in open-loop and closed-loop solutions. An approach is developed to negate this problem by implementing a novel terminal constraints that showed a promising results in the overall performance of the process.

Show moreRecent evidence suggests that particulate matter (of both indoor and outdoor origin) is one of the most important airborne pollutants driving adverse health effects worldwide. Despite our understanding of major indoor aerosol sources that contribute to adverse health effects across the population, gaps in our knowledge of some aspects of the sources, fate, transport, and control of indoor aerosols still remain. This dissertation focuses on filling three major gaps related to indoor aerosols. The first objective of this dissertation is to improve knowledge of the impacts of particle filtration in central heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems on fine particles smaller than 2.5 μm in diameter (i.e., PM2.5) and ultrafine particles smaller than 100 nm in diameter (i.e., UFPs) of outdoor origin that penetrate into the indoor environment. Results demonstrate that higher-efficiency HVAC filters can significantly reduce indoor proportions of outdoor PM2.5 and UFPs inside residences, but home vintage, climate zone, and ventilation strategy strongly influence the outcomes due to widely varying air exchange rates, HVAC system runtimes, and sources of ventilation air. The second objective of this dissertation is to improve knowledge of emissions and control of particulate matter from a recently established source of indoor pollutants: desktop three-dimensional (3D) printers. Median estimates of time-varying UFP emission rates ranged from ~108 to ~1011 #/min across all tested combinations, varying primarily by filament material and, to a lesser extent, bed temperature. It was also shown that UFP concentrations within close or moderate proximity to some desktop 3D printer and filament combinations can exceed recommended exposure levels. The most effective control strategies for reducing pollutant concentrations emitted from desktop 3D printers wereinstalling a high-flow spot ventilation system and operating the printer in a sealed enclosure with high efficiency gas and particle filtration. Finally, the third objective of this dissertation is to improve knowledge of the fate, transport, and control of infectious diseases in indoor environments through mathematical modeling of bioaerosol transmission and infection risk. Results demonstrate that Recirculating HVAC filtration can achieve risk reductions at lower costs of operation than equivalent levels of outdoor air ventilation, particularly for MERV 13-16 filters. It was also shown that in addition to the biological characteristics of respiratory pathogens, human activities, interzonal airflows, and physical properties of bioaerosols can substantially impact the infection transmission risk. Further, the dominant pathway for influenza transmission indoors under most conditions was airborne transmission. Finally, estimations of the back-calculated quanta generation rate for influenza viruses were directly in line with the existing data gathered from prior epidemiology studies.

Show moreThe aerobic, Gram-negative bacterium Vitreoscilla spp. produces an oxygen-storage protein, which is a hemoglobin. Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) was the first microbial hemoglobin to be characterized. Like mammalian hemoglobins, it can be described in terms of the distal (ligand-binding) and proximal sides of the heme group. VHb is regarded as a model to study the structure and function of hemoglobin. After the crystal structure of wild-type VHb was obtained, along with several mutation studies on its distal site, it was proposed that residue Tyr29 might play a vital role in ligand binding. In a recent study, a Tyr29Ala mutant displayed functional properties similar to those of the wild-type protein, evidently because the space in the ligand-binding domain occupied by the aromatic ring of Tyr29 in wild type is occupied by the aliphatic ring of Pro54 residue in the mutant which results in a similar ring structure at the ligand-binding domain. This project is aimed to characterize structural changes when Pro54 is mutated to Ala, either with or without the accompanying mutation of Tyr29 to Ala. In an earlier effort, the Y29A/P54A and P54A mutant vgb gene was constructed, but mutant proteins could not be crystallized. In the current study, a hexahistidine tag was added to the C terminus of VHb to aid in protein purification. The Y29A/P54A and P54A mutant protein was purified by affinity chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography and hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The purity of the protein was determined on SDS-PAGE. Circular dichroism data indicated that both Y29A and Y29A/P54A mutants’ α-helix content decreased significantly. Thermal denaturation studies suggest that there are no major changes in the Tm for the Y29A/P54A mutant, and a slight increase for the P54A mutant.

Ideally, The the data ticker plant has to have a sustained optimal throughput of three million price quotes per second – the current industry state of the art - and minimize with minimal latency while maintain specific constraints. Toward this end, the team will create a proof-of-concept data ticker plant that processes real data. The initial system will be used as a baseline on which optimizations to specific components will be made. The ticker plant aggregates streaming data for numerous global financial markets and disseminates the data to thousands of users in real time. The data is used in Townsend Analytics’ RealTick® Execution Management System (EMS), its flagship institutional product for the financial services industry. IPRO 313, Spring, 2008, builds on work done in the previous semester. Last Fall, IPRO 313 conducted background research on the market data systems and outlined a basic design and performance metrics for our system. Our goal with IPRO 313 during the Spring 2008 This semester, we will is to resume system development, implement and work on performance optimize a basic market data ticker systemimprovements, enhanced functionality, and more detailed benchmarks. Using past semester result, research and development, the group will refine the design, prototype development and benchmark testing. The intent is to also provide detailed performance metrics of the system. This will enable future optimizations and algorithmic enhancements to the system in order to increase system throughput while minimizing latency and variance.
