Show moreThe Delta Tau Delta fraternity wants to make their current house as energy efficient and green as possible. We will look at all aspects of the DTD house and their operations to create a more energy efficient fraternity. During this IPRO we will consider possible alternatives to many issues including but not limited to: mechanical heating system, building envelope, thermal properties of buildings perimeter, roofing materials, air infiltration, ventilation, and occupancy trends. In general, we will collect information regarding the existing conditions and itemize all improvements that could be made to create a more energy efficient fraternity. In addition, we will look for grant assistance to help pay for future energy efficiency upgrades. This will allow us to address what is possible through comparison of funding and needs.

Show moreOur team was asked to come up with an innovative and non-invasive means of extracting and measuring glucose levels in the body as well as administering insulin back into the body, also by non-invasive means. Our research lead us to several reports on the effectiveness of ultrasound in expanding pore opening diameters. We decided to approach the problem with a device that would administer ultrasonic vibration to the surface of the skin thus expanding the pore openings. Once expanded a combination of vacuum and reverse iontophoresis would then extract a small amount of interstitial fluid. The fluid would be measured for glucose concentration using impedance spectroscopy. Once a glucose concentration was found, a proper amount of insulin would then be administered back through the skin by means of pressure and iontophoresis. Our experiments were conducted on harvested porcine skin. Sonic vibration at or around 10kHz served as a substitute for ultrasound. Vacuum was administered to the surface of the skin after a set amount of time of sonic vibration. Although results at first seemed promising, further investigation into the behavior of harvested skin yielded that our results were not as they seemed. Impedance spectroscopy was explored by first trying to find the resonant frequency of glucose. Earlier attempts at this were unsuccessful do to frequency limitations of measuring devices. Our team learned of a device that could measure 10 times higher frequencies than what had previously been recorded, but unfortunately was unable to solidify a concrete resonant frequency for glucose.

Show moreBeer is one of the most consumed beverages in the world. The culture of brewing beer is one that continues to attract the attention of people from all walks of life. Beer can be differentiated one from another in terms of their color, alcohol content, smoothness, bitterness, type of ingredients used as well as the recipe used. In a very broad sense, however, beer can be broken up into lagers and ales. The main difference between lagers and ales is the kind of yeast used and the conditions under which the fermentation is carried out. In this project, an attempt will be made to produce a beer that is on the continuum between lagers and ales: the German Altbier. The Altbier has a unique combination of flavor, aroma, bitterness and smoothness. The central objective of this project is to take on the challenge of creating the Altbier. This will be accomplished by bringing together students from a broad range of academic backgrounds whose different skills sets will be applied to the task at hand.

Show moreIn recent years, interest in extracting significant amounts of electrical power from large wind turbines has increased significantly. However, as simple as these devices may look to the layman’s eye, designing a device which efficiently and reliably converts wind into electrical power represents a highly non-trivial challenge. Further complications come about when this green energy is expected to work as a module on the top or the side of a building. Extracting the maximum amount of energy from wind flows whilst transforming mechanical energy into electrical power and then feeding this energy into the electric grid of a building while sustaining minimal losses and maintaining reasonable machine production and installation costs is a fully innovative and extraordinary proposal and objective. This inter-professional project team (IPRO 323 for Spring 2011) understands that the full undertaking of this idea would last, at the very least, five to six semesters of highly efficient work and research. ? Furthermore, is the geometrical design of the entire wind turbine which, is a project in itself. Therefore, the main objective of this semester’s IPRO is designing the shape of an urban rooftop that will harness an amount of wind which will induce optimal turbine work. This part of the project will be aided through wind tunnel testing and computer assisted analysis. Once a tentative shape has been obtained, 323 IPRO progeny could evaluate the economic feasibility of the project by installing several existing or new wind turbines designs into the modular shape provided by the Spring 2011 team. Somewhat further explaining this semester’s work: On the supposition/knowledge that different inlet and outlet geometries to the wind turbine will affect the power output, this team will perform wind tunnel studies of various wind turbine inlet and outlet sections along with a wind turbine analogy (a porous plate in place of the turbine will simulate the pressure drop of a random or particular turbine, as shown by Aubrun, Loyer, Espana, Hayden and Hancock on the AIAA paper “Experimental study on the wind turbine wake meandering with the help of a non-rotating simplified model and of a rotating model”; so that the analysis can be simplified). This is in order to better understand the power output behavior of such systems in complex flow situations. These tests and analysis shall have as an outcome the conception and final design of a modular wind turbine inlet and outlet sections, which can be further analyzed with real turbine simulations to determine the viability of placing modular wind turbines on buildings. As the New Green Revolution sweeps over the world and we all become more conscious of our impacts on the environment the quest for new forms and sources of clean energy ramps up. This project intends to take the first steps on creating a new opportunity for wind power transformation in cities, a windy environment underutilized as a source of energy where it is used most.

Show moreThis project concerns design of a two-story building plus a basement to be constructed on a 60 feet wide by 120 feet long lot. The structure is located in Carbondale, Illinois subject to moderate-high seismic activities. The structure will serve as a museum of contemporary art. Our client is especially interested in having a design that would protect museum artifacts during a potential seismic activity. The suggested method is to use a base isolation system for the building. As a minimum, the following tasks are required: overall design layout for the building, architectural design of the building, structural design of the building, electrical and lighting, plumbing, fire protection and HVAC design, and addressing any serviceability issues.
