Show moreThis project focuses on building a three-dimensional high quality "mesh" for scientific simulations. Since the quality of the mesh affects the accuracy and convergence of numerical systems, having a high quality mesh is one of the most important requirements for conducting numerical simulations. Currently, most of the software packages cannot theoretically guarantee the quality of the mesh generated. The purpose of this project is to implement a selected set of algorithms that have a theoretical quality guarantee in order to study their practical performance compared with heuristics-based methods. We expect that peer researchers in various fields could use the software developed to conduct scientific simulations. In addition, the developed software will also provide the building block for later numerical simulation systems and computer graphics related systems. The major activities of the project are to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge related to computer science and other engineering departments. This project provides students from engineering and other fields with knowledge of computer science, including programming, algorithm design and analysis; and provides students from computer science with knowledge of scientific simulations and how to apply their knowledge to solve practical engineering problems.

Show moreA method and an implantable apparatus for automatically delivering a defibrillating drug to a patient upon detection of the onset of atrial fibrillation. Atrial activity of a heart is detected and monitored. A delivery time is continuously computed and a delivery signal is emitted as a function of the monitored level of the atrial activity. When the delivery signal is emitted, an infusion pump discharges a defibrillating drug into the bloodstream of the patient. The atrial activity is also continuously monitored for computing a pacing time at which a pacing signal is emitted as a second function of the monitored level of atrial activity. When the pacing signal is emitted a pacer paces the atrium of the heart.

Show moreThe intent of the IPRO 315 is to design a large-scale structure. The focus of this IPRO is structural analysis. The advisors of this group thought it would be even more interested if IPRO 335 and IPRO 315 would mesh together to create a large green structure. The intent of IPRO 335 is to design a “green” and innovative building using the skills and input of students studying different majors at Illinois Institute of Technology. Our team has decided to design a replacement apartment building for Gunsaulus Hall on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. Innovative technologies and practices will be researched and employed to design a “green” building. The decision to design a building for the IIT campus came about because it is an area that all of the team members could relate to and have a more realistic grasp on the project. For the remainder of the semester the two groups are planning on coordinating with each other on each step of the design process.

Show moreAn all-mode, bonding pad-oriented ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection structure, protects ICs against ESD pulses of all modes in all directions. A unique quasi-symmetrical layout design is devised to improve ESD structure. Physical symmetry and rounded layout provide uniform current and thermal distribution as well as symmetrical electrical operation characteristics. The ESD structure allows tunable triggering voltage, low holding voltage, low impedance, low leakage, fast response time and low parasitic effect. The ESD structure can easily be placed under or surrounding a bonding pad and consumes little extra silicon. The ESD structure can be implemented in commercial BiCMOS processes and is suitable for multiple-supply, mixed-signal, parasitic-sensitive RF and high-pin-count ICs.

Show moreThe direction IPro 307 “Intermodal Container Transport” is taking for the 2008 semester is geared toward alternative energy technologies as well as expansion of the capacity and efficiency of a designated rail transfer yard. The selected exploration site is the Norfolk Southern rail transfer yard at 47th street near the Dan Ryan Expressway. Since there is a large amount of on-site equipment (Mi-Jack side loaders, cranes, and yard hostlers), the possibility of introducing alternative fuel technologies exists and can provide a cleaner and more cost-effective solution to air pollution and rising fuel costs. The group will be focusing efforts on using wind power in parallel with compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel, as well as designing innovative ways to improve yard capacity and efficiency. The ultimate goal of this IPro is to develop a plan to increase yard efficiency and output, while at the same time incorporating green technology as an alternative energy source for the facility equipment.

Show moreThe COMPASS experiment at CERN is one of the leading experiments studying the spin structure of the nucleon. Until now, the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) and the Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution Functions (TMD PDFs) of protons and deuterons have been studied in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) measurements. The polarised Drell-Yan (DY) process is a complementary way to access the TMD PDFs, as it allows us to measure convolutions of only PDFs without involving fragmentation functions (FFs). COMPASS aims to perform the first ever polarised DY experiment in the world, which is foreseen to start in late 2014. By detecting dimuons from DY events we will be able to extract azimuthal spin asymmetries, each containing a convolution of two TMD PDFs, one from a negative pion beam with a momentum of 190 GeV/c and the other one from a transversely polarised proton target (NH₃). After their disentangling we can access four of the eight TMD PDFs needed to describe the nucleon structure at leading twist, like the Sivers and the Boer-Mulders functions. The opportunity to study, in the same experiment, the TMD PDFs from both SIDIS and DY processes is unique at COMPASS. Therefore, we are in privileged conditions to confirm or to deny the expected sign change in Sivers and Boer-Mulders functions when accessed via DY or SIDIS processes. An overview of the preparation and future measurements of the polarised DY experiment will be provided.
