Show moreThis project will investigate the technical, legal and economic issues associated with designing, building, installing and operating a wind speed/direction monitoring station on the lakefront that provides real-time data to a web site for convenient access by wind surfer enthusiasts, sailors and others. A need has been identified among the wind surfer enthusiasts in the Chicago area for improved information about wind conditions at selectedlocations along the Lake Michigan shore that are popular sites for wind surfing as well as sailing. General information about wind speed and direction is available today from the National Weather Service, but unfortunately it is not sufficiently localized or up-to-date to provide a reliable indication of existing conditions or trends. Access to highly reliable and more accurate predictive information at a specific location is important to wind surfers, because there is considerable wasted time and effort associated with traveling to a wind surfing location, only to find that the conditions are not acceptable. The team will explore the feasibility of designing, installing and operating a wind monitoring station at a location along the lakefront. An initial task may be to investigate any related installations around the country that monitor local conditions and present it in real time on the web. This project involves mechanical and electrical design, as well as control software and web site development. The project work extends beyond the technical in order to address the range of practical issues that must be addressed to make it happen. This includes investigating the legal (liability), regulatory (permitting), aesthetic (ordinances), economic (installation, maintenance), safety, security, public relations and marketing issues. This project is a continuation of a Fall 2001 project that has been making progress in developing a prototype.

Show moreHeusler alloys are compounds based on the original Heusler phase Cu2MnAl which are ternary intermetallics with a particular chemical stoichiometric formula X2YZ and face-centered cubic structure. Heusler alloys are of interest because of a range of physical phenomena which may occur in them that can be applied in mechanical or electronic devices, including shape memory property and disorder/order phenomenon. In this work, a high temperature drop calorimeters and Setaram calorimeters were used to obtain the enthalpy of formation and heat capacity of compounds in the Mn-based Heusler compounds (X2MnZ). Lattice parameters of these compounds were determined with XRD, and phase equilibria in these alloy system were studied in this work. Phase transformations were studied with DSC and dilatometry. The work is aimed at populating databases for computational thermodynamics, developing an understanding of alloying and clarifying phase equilibria.

Show moreLocated in Krakow, Poland, IPRO-349 is different from any other IPRO that has been implemented to date. Unlike its Illinois Institute of Technology counterparts, IPRO-349 is a study abroad, an internship and a partner project with students from Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza (AGH). Rather than separating into sub teams as a normal IPRO would, IPRO 349 is broken into completely different project groups. Each group could and should be considered a separate IPRO group. This project plan is from the perspective of Group 3.1 within IPRO-349 and adapted to fit the requirements of the company Comarch. This report deals with the reasoning behind IPRO-349 Group 3.1 and explains how the problems presented will be solved. It is divided into four sections. Section 1 assists in the understanding of the project by providing a brief introduction of Comarch and the project’s background, as well as a high level list of objectives. Section 2 expands on Section 1’s objectives by going into what type of work and how Group 3.1 will need to work in order to complete the objectives. Section 2 also explains what exactly is expected to result from their work. Section 3 goes into the most detail as it deals with the more specific aspects of the project such as its budget and the task list, designating who does what. The human resource assignment of the project is then discussed in Section 4, further identifying the individuals in Group 3.1 and what special skills they contribute to the project
