Show moreThe goal of this project is to design software to support the secure use of portable memory as a medium for transferring secure data. Envision yourself carrying around sensitive data (e.g., passwords, account numbers) on a flash drive that: 1. is secure from unauthorized access, and 2. will not attack another machine on installation (e.g., with a virus). A flash drive is initialized to contain user data as well as an application that allows these data to be manipulated in a consistent way by various entities. Depending on the entity, different data are visible and changeable.

Show moreIPRO 338 project started in 2003 was designed to address the issue of knowledge transfer in the IPRO teams. Due to an 80% student turnover rate and few teams continuing across semesters a large amount of valuable project knowledge was being lost. To address this issue, the IPRO knowledge management tool – iKNOW, was developed to assist with capturing and cataloging the knowledge generated from IPRO projects during each semester. This semester, IPRO 338 was charged with the full implementation of IKNOW across the 36 teams in the IPRO Spring semester. However, since this report was completed prior to the iKNOW upload deadline, a full accounting of the number of compliant teams was unavailable.

Show moreHeusler alloys are compounds based on the original Heusler phase Cu2MnAl which are ternary intermetallics with a particular chemical stoichiometric formula X2YZ and face-centered cubic structure. Heusler alloys are of interest because of a range of physical phenomena which may occur in them that can be applied in mechanical or electronic devices, including shape memory property and disorder/order phenomenon. In this work, a high temperature drop calorimeters and Setaram calorimeters were used to obtain the enthalpy of formation and heat capacity of compounds in the Mn-based Heusler compounds (X2MnZ). Lattice parameters of these compounds were determined with XRD, and phase equilibria in these alloy system were studied in this work. Phase transformations were studied with DSC and dilatometry. The work is aimed at populating databases for computational thermodynamics, developing an understanding of alloying and clarifying phase equilibria.

Show moreA system, method, and set of protocols for dynamic group communication are provided for enabling dynamic process migration and dynamic group membership management. A process in a group receives and distributes a migration signal. Group communication continues while the processes in the group asynchronously reach a global superstep and then a synchronization point. The processes then spawn a new process on a new device and update group membership information. The new process operates in continuous execution with the new group.

Show moreIPRO 303 begins its first semester as a project designed to enhance the operations of both coal-burning power plants and the Smart Signal© Corporation. When critical equipment fails, it sends a shockwave throughout an organization and into its supply chain. Smart Signal’s EPI*Center software solution enables companies to fill the equipment performance gap between current operations and corporate objectives through early, actionable warning of any abnormal performance.

Show moreLocated in Krakow, Poland, IPRO-349 is different from any other IPRO that has been implemented to date. Unlike its Illinois Institute of Technology counterparts, IPRO-349 is a study abroad, an internship and a partner project with students from Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza (AGH). Rather than separating into sub teams as a normal IPRO would, IPRO 349 is broken into completely different project groups. Each group could and should be considered a separate IPRO group. This project plan is from the perspective of Group 3.1 within IPRO-349 and adapted to fit the requirements of the company Comarch. This report deals with the reasoning behind IPRO-349 Group 3.1 and explains how the problems presented will be solved. It is divided into four sections. Section 1 assists in the understanding of the project by providing a brief introduction of Comarch and the project’s background, as well as a high level list of objectives. Section 2 expands on Section 1’s objectives by going into what type of work and how Group 3.1 will need to work in order to complete the objectives. Section 2 also explains what exactly is expected to result from their work. Section 3 goes into the most detail as it deals with the more specific aspects of the project such as its budget and the task list, designating who does what. The human resource assignment of the project is then discussed in Section 4, further identifying the individuals in Group 3.1 and what special skills they contribute to the project

Show moreIPRO 325’s objective is to create a program at IIT which looks to make an impact in the most immediate problems dealing with the world’s rural poor. We seek to do this by becoming familiar with the current trends and events throughout the world which address these poverty issues. We will also examine the Agencies and Universities which are working towards annihilating the world’s grossly impoverished areas.

Show moreIpro 332 is in its sixth and concluding semester and has become a well established project. The strong work of previous semesters’ teams has given the current team a good base to start from in furthering our goal of energy consumption. This semester the goals were to expand upon the modules that have already been made, explore the creation of a new module and market our modules within the community.

Show moreHeusler compounds are ternary intermetallics with many promising properties such as spin polarization and magnetic shape memory effect. A better understanding of their thermodynamic properties facilitates future design and development. Therefore, standard enthalpies of formation and heat capacities from room temperature to 1500 K of selected Heusler compounds X2YZ (X = Co, Fe, Ni, Pd, Rh, Ru; Y = Co, Cu, Fe, Hf, Mn, Ni, Ti, V, Zr; Z = Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn) and half-Heusler compounds XYSn (X = Au, Co, Fe, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh; Y = Hf, Mn, Ti, Zr) were measured using high temperature direct reaction calorimetry. The measured standard enthalpies of formation were compared with those predicted from ab initio calculations and the extended semiempirical Miedema's model. Trends in standard enthalpy of formation with respect to the periodic classification of elements were discussed. The effect of a fourth element (Co, Cu, Fe, Pd; Ti, V; Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge) on the standard enthalpy of formation of Ni2MnSn was also investigated. Lattice parameters of the compounds with an L21 structure were determined using X-ray powder diffraction analysis. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine melting points and phase transformation temperatures. Phase relationships were investigated using scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive spectrometer. The isothermal section of the Fe-Sn-Ti ternary system at 873 K was established using equilibrated alloys. Three ternary compounds including the Heusler compound Fe2SnTi were observed. A new ternary compound Fe5Sn9Ti6 was reported and the crystal structure of FeSnTi2 was determined for the first time.
