Show moreIPRO321, Enhancing Reliability and Performance of a Paper Shredder, is focused on designing a better, more reliable paper shredder without increasing cost. The objectives of this group, as set forth by the sponsor, Seth Lewis of the Manhattan Group, are: 1. To determine the amount of force needed to cut 6, 8, and 10 sheets of 20 lb. paper taking into account the length and width of the shred 2. To design an efficient gear train that optimizes the number of gears and minimizes the motor size 3. To develop acoustical sound dampeners to reduce the amount of noise created during the shredding process by 10 decibels. The team will seek to accomplish these goals through the use of computer simulation, extended research, and laboratory testing and error. By the end of the semester the team anticipates having developed a mathematical model that will allow for the minimization of the amount of force used to shred various amounts of paper, to have built a gear train that works better and lasts longer, and to have noticeably reduced the amount of noise created by the shredder. The IPRO Team’s goal is to implement all of these changes to create a shredder with improved performance, reliability, and life span without increasing cost.

Each year FMS receives accounts from private and government agencies and must collect from those accounts in order to receive a commission, their payment. The IPRO team had met with the sponsor many times over the course of the semester to gather requirements, map and layout FMS’ process model and in general have a better understanding of what FMS does. The team needed a better understanding of the problem and what the problem meant for FMS. In this paper, forced oscillations introduced in the input flow rates of an exothermic continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) are shown to result in a modification of the S-shaped steady state curve. This modification leads to a possibility of operating a CSTR at an asymptotically stable period regime located in the vicinity of an unstable steady state of the reactor system with stationary input flow rates. Thus, vibrations of the input flow rates can be viewed as a stabilizing mechanism for exothermic CSTR's.

Show moreFor real-time embedded systems, such as control systems used in medical, automotive and avionics industry, tasks deployed on such systems often have stringent real-time, reliability and energy consumption constraints. How to schedule real-time tasks under various QoS constraints is a challenging issue that has drawn attention from the research community for decades. In this thesis, we study task execution strategies that not only minimize system energy consumption but also guarantee task deadlines and reliability satisfaction. We first consider the scenario when all tasks are of the same criticality. For this case, two task execution strategies, i.e. checkpointing based and task re-execution based strategies are developed. Second, considering the scenario when tasks are of different criticalities, a heuristic search based energy minimization strategy is also proposed. When tasks are of different criticalities, a commonly used approach to guaranteeing high-criticality task deadlines is to remove low-criticality tasks whenever the system is overloaded. With such an approach, the QoS provided to low-criticality tasks is rather poor, it can cause low-criticality tasks to have high deadline miss rate and less accumulated execution time. To overcome this shortcoming, we develop a time reservation based scheduling algorithm and a two-step optimization algorithm to meet high-criticality task deadlines, while minimizing low-criticality task deadline miss rate and maximizing their accumulated execution time, respectively. As many-core techniques mature, many real-time embedded systems are built upon many-core platforms. However, many-core platforms have high wear-out failure rate. Hence, the last issue to be addressed in the thesis is how to replace defective cores on many-core platforms so that deployed applications’ real-time properties can be maintained. We develop an offline and an online application-aware system reconfiguration strategy to minimize the impact of the physical layer changes on deployed real-time applications. All the developed approaches are evaluated through extensive simulations. The results indicate that the developed approaches are more effective in addressing the identified problems compared to the existing ones in the literature.

Show moreCurrent web search engines only search unstructured data (web documents). A lot of data is available that is structured (weather, census, sports, etc.). A search engine that could search both structured data and text would be able to answer questions such as "show me the top three restaurants in Chicago" without simply looking for the word "three." The team has been building a Java-based metasearch engine in IPRO 334 duringFall 2000. Numerous issues have arisen. How do we identify which data source will be best for the query? What is the best user interface for the system? For Spring 2001, the team will extend the search engine to include more sources. The team could really use the talents of non-computer science students to help test the system and improve the user interface. Students should plan to work on this at least ten hours a week - anything less will resultin a poor grade for the IPRO. Students for this IPRO are graded heavily based on the success of the team, not just individual performance. Weekly progress reports are required. Note that graduate students in Computer Science are not able to use IPRO classes for credit toward a graduate degree.

Through this research the team will gain a basic understanding of the workings behind nanotechnology and determine applications which may interest our target audience (see second objective). The second objective of IPRO 341 is to determine a target audience. Since this semester’s team will focus on public assessment and education, a target audience must be chosen to present our research findings to. The third objective of IPRO 341 is to assess the current level of knowledge which the target audience has pertaining to nanotechnology. By determining what the audience already knows about the subject the team can organize and present the necessary information. The fourth objective of IPRO 341 is to educate our target audience. Show moreThe IPRO 326 Project aims at systematically testing both parallel and series vehicle configurations of the Hummer and HMMWV (High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) to find the optimum hybridization factor specific to each configuration. An additional objective of the team is to work in coordination with Ph.D. students to simulate a hybrid electric bus system that is scheduled to have practical implementations by the end of the year. The team will also review research papers published from other universities to prepare for the upcoming FutureTruck 2005 competition, which involves designing more energy-efficient trucks with hybrid-electric drive trains. All vehicle simulations and structured testing will be performed using ADVISOR, as well as other software packages available in the Power Electronics and Motor Drives Laboratory at IIT. Related work done by previous student teams shall be reviewed and integrated into this project.

Drivers are increasingly realizing the problem as they become accustomed to other technology, which increases the efficiency of their lives (eg smartphones). While driving around searching for an open lot, circling a garage for an parking spot, or wandering through garage a looking for a parked car, people have time to ponder the many improvements that should be made to the parking experience. Simply Park: IPRO 365 is taking initiative to seize the possibilities new technologies offer the parking industry. The result should be improved driver experience as well as increased efficiency and profitability of parking facilities. The system will include signs visible to passersby that display the number of vacancies within a parking facility. Once in the parking facility, additional signs will direct drivers to sections of the facility with vacancies. Colored lights above each parking spot will indicate the state of occupancy for quick reference when looking down an aisle. When a driver parks, the ticket they receive at the entrance gate will associate their ticket to the spot they parked in, so when the driver returns to the facility he/she can present his/her ticket to a kiosk which will notify him/her how to get back to his/her car. As the vehicle leaves the ticket association will be reset and displays will update to show one more spot available. Additional interfaces through mobile and internet applications will further expedite the parking process. 1National

Show moreAtomic layer deposition (ALD) is a thin film growth technique that relies on self-limiting reactions between vapor precursors and a surface. Significant progress has been made in the scope of materials grown by ALD, enabled by precursor development and investigation of surface reaction mechanisms; progress is still necessary. This dissertation has two portions. The first is the development of organometallic compounds to engender new material growth by ALD. Second is the development of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) tools and techniques for observations of the metal coordination environment during ALD. One material that can be difficult to make is doped materials. Composition of a doped material determines the film properties. One example is vanadium doped indium sulfide. This material was purposed as an intermediate bandgap solar absorbing material which can absorb multiple ranges of light. Two new precursors were developed for the growth of indium sulfide and vanadium sulfide. The indium sulfide material grown has shown superior film photocurrent qualities and doping of vanadium into indium sulfide with fine control over atomic placement was achieved. Films were grown that showed secondary absorptions which aligned with theoretical calculations. The flexibility of the V(III) precursor is shown by a short study on the control of the difficult vanadium-oxygen system in the deposition of stoichiometric oxides. To illustrate how XAS can be used in conjunction with other techniques tin dioxide growth from a stannylene precursor and hydrogen peroxide was studied. From ex situ XAS measurements nucleation, growth and termination reaction mechanism were discovered. Next, a mobile ALD reactor allowed for in situ XAS measurements to be performed on “flat” substrates for the first time. Specifically, the local coordination environment and surface reactions were followed while erbium was doped into alumina and coordination environment of manganese was investigated in the growth of manganese-doped zinc oxide, with the ability to probe in-plane versus out-of-plane bonds. These unique in situ XAS experiments allow for greater understand of metal and non-metal precursors as they interact with surfaces. This enhanced understanding enables new precursor development which leads to better control over surface chemistry and new materials.

Show moreThe IPRO 336 team is working with National Pasteurized Eggs, Inc. to create and test a new marketing strategy for the Davidson’s brand pasteurized eggs. Pasteurized eggs are a reasonably new product in the egg industry and, as of yet, have not gained a large percentage of retail market sales. Pasteurized eggs are comparable in many aspects to their competitors but offer the added advantage of being virtually bacteria and salmonella free. Due to this fact, Davidson’s eggs have grown exponentially in the food service market, especially for hospitals and other locations catering to at-risk groups. The company is now seeking to expand in the retail market and is looking to revise their current marketing strategy to meet this goal, with the help of the IPRO team. After an initial review, the IPRO group split up into sub-groups that will focus on different aspects of the marketing plan, including Consumer Education/Psychology, Competitor Analysis, Display, Packaging/Labeling, Promotions, and Website Improvements. Through both secondary and primary research (in the form of consumer surveys), these groups will gain an understanding of the egg market, the average egg buyer, and how the marketing strategy can be most efficiently revised. Once the research has been completed, the sub-groups will be able to create a design or marketing technique in their area of improvement, test their ideas, and revise as necessary. The IPRO group is seeking a final product that will boost retail sales of Davidson’s pasteurized egg and increase consumer awareness of the large benefits of such a product.

Show moreOver the next few years, the global scientific community will be deciding on the site for the International Linear Collider (ILC). The ILC will be the next great step in particle physics, and there will only be one in the world. The United States would like to host the ILC and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois is a very likely candidate to support this technology. Many important politicians and scientists will be visiting Fermilab during this period of political negotiation and site evaluation. The team’s goal is to design an exhibit for the atrium in Wilson Hall at Fermilab that conveys the scale and importance of scientific research, the value of science education, and the intersections of art and science for both a scientific and non-scientific audience. The exhibit will not only be open to the Fermilab staff and general public, but also to visiting dignitaries and politicians.

Show moreThe IPRO 336 team is working with National Pasteurized Eggs, Inc. to create and test a new marketing strategy for the Davidson’s brand pasteurized eggs. Pasteurized eggs are a reasonably new product in the egg industry and, as of yet, have not gained a large percentage of retail market sales. Pasteurized eggs are comparable in many aspects to their competitors but offer the added advantage of being virtually bacteria and salmonella free. Due to this fact, Davidson’s eggs have grown exponentially in the food service market, especially for hospitals and other locations catering to at-risk groups. The company is now seeking to expand in the retail market and is looking to revise their current marketing strategy to meet this goal, with the help of the IPRO team. After an initial review, the IPRO group split up into sub-groups that will focus on different aspects of the marketing plan, including Consumer Education/Psychology, Competitor Analysis, Display, Packaging/Labeling, Promotions, and Website Improvements. Through both secondary and primary research (in the form of consumer surveys), these groups will gain an understanding of the egg market, the average egg buyer, and how the marketing strategy can be most efficiently revised. Once the research has been completed, the sub-groups will be able to create a design or marketing technique in their area of improvement, test their ideas, and revise as necessary. The IPRO group is seeking a final product that will boost retail sales of Davidson’s pasteurized egg and increase consumer awareness of the large benefits of such a product.
