Show moreReduction of carbon oxides products in oxidative pyrolysis of halogenated methanes in gas phase halogen-catalyzed oxidative-pyrolytic, non-flame, conversion of methane to higher molecular weight hydrocarbons is carried out in the presence of oxygen-containing gas which is primarily introduced in a latter portion of the process sequence reducing the oxygen requirement for effective suppression of formation of carbonaceous deposits thereby reducing carbon oxides product. Conversion of halogenated methanes to high yields of ethylene by conduct of the reaction in the presence of methane further reduces oxygen requirements and results in insignificant solid carbonaceous deposit formation.

Show morePotential power plant sites can become more difficult to determine if water is not available in great quantity. This is true in western states where it may be scarce and competed for by other industries as well as households. The aim of this project is to find an economical, as well as environmentally friendly way to recover water from the flue gas, which is produced when powder-river-basin (PRB) coal is burned in a 750 MW power plant.

Show moreInformal observations of a practical and creative approach piloting Blended Library Instruction for undergraduate Civil Architecture and Engineering students, in collaboration with faculty. At Illinois Institute of Technology students don’t receive library instruction as a required class or in tandem with a composition class. Faculty will schedule one-time sessions, which ideally should be planned with a class assignment in mind, but students are rarely engaged with a one time instruction. Many have IKIA syndrome or I Know It Already syndrome. The Millennials are a group that has integrated technology into every aspect of their lives and they assume that retrieving useful or necessary information will be easy. When they discover this isn’t the case lack of time, heightened anxiety, and increased frustration can prevent them from doing their best work. By intentionally creating a similar crisis prior to library instruction, students were more interested in what they stood to gain during pending library instruction. In this presentation we will discuss: 1) A creative means of delivering library instruction to a traditionally challenging population: engineering undergraduate students 2) Qualitative information collected via multiple assignments and interpreted in a quantitative fashion, as well as our observations. 3) A method for preparing students for library instruction that can be applied in almost any discipline without asking the instructor to sacrifice class time.

Show moreBacterial pathogens often show significant intra-species variations in ecological fitness, host preference and pathogenic potential to cause infectious disease. The species of Listeria monocytogenes, a facultative intracellular pathogen and the causative agent of human listeriosis, consists of at least three distinct genetic lineages. Two of these lineages predominantly cause human sporadic and epidemic infections, whereas the third lineage has never been implicated in human disease outbreaks despite its overall conservation of many known virulence factors. The genomes of 26 L. monocytogenes strains representing the three lineages are compared based on both in silico comparative genomic analysis and high-density, pan-genomic DNA microarray hybridizations. We uncover 86 genes and 8 small regulatory RNAs that likely make L. monocytogenes lineages differ in carbohydrate utilization and stress resistance during their residence in natural habitats and passage through the host gastrointestinal tract. We also identify 2,330 to 2,456 core genes that define this species along with an open pan-genome pool that contains more than 4,052 genes. Phylogenomic reconstructions based on 3,560 homologous groups allowed robust estimation of phylogenetic relatedness among L. monocytogenes strains. The pan-genome approach enables accurate co-analysis of DNA sequence and hybridization array data for both core gene estimation and phylogenomic reconstruction. Application of our method to the pan-genome of L. monocytogenes sheds new insights into the intra-species genomic diversification, niche expansion and evolution of this important foodborne pathogen.

Show moreThe purpose of this thesis is to develop an effective design approach necessary in building a new city. The challenge is to assemble a background observations and research that will provide an understanding of the concepts required for developing new sustainable cities. It is hopeful that the ideas and design process can also be a framework to be applied on other undeveloped land that has the potential for new cities particularly in Malaysia. The main idea is to develop a thorough understanding of how the built environment plays an important role in shaping a community as well as identifying the technology involved. It specifically addresses the central issues involved with the art of place making, which determines the success of any particular urbanity. Environment then becomes the most important factor responsible for the physical, mental, and psychological development of an urban society.

Show moreWe present a method for isogeometric analysis on a triangulation of a domain bounded by NURBS curves. In this method, both the geometry and the physical eld are represented by bivariate splines in Bernstein B ezier form over the triangulation. We describe a set of procedures to construct a parametric domain and its triangulation from a given physical domain, construct Cr-smooth basis functions over the domain, and establish a rational Triangular B ezier Spline (rTBS) -based geometric mapping that Cr smoothly maps the parametric domain onto the physical domain and exactly recovers NURBS boundaries. As a result, this approach can achieve automated meshing of objects with complex topologies and allows highly localized re nement. Isogeometric analysis of problems from linear elasticity and advectiondi usion analysis are demonstrated.

Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities. Three major projects currently hold latent potential for the school: the communications center, the sustainability wall, and the overall greening of the facilities. If these projects are completed correctly, they will become a catalyst for positive change. We are proposing to create a transition from library to communication center because of its isolated state in the school. The sustainability wall is two-fold in terms of benefit. It will upgrade the current windows which are lacking and will create an interesting learning tool. Greening of the entire school is the third project and includes windows, roofing, etc. to improve efficiency. Through the use of all three proposals, IPRO 314 believes in the school promotion and what enrollment it could bring.

Show moreRenewable energy is one of the most important and widely researched topics today. It is classically defined as any form of energy that comes from renewable sources and, for all practical purposes, cannot be depleted. This may include solar, wind, or geothermal power, as well as biomass or biofuels. When considering biomass, or any living or recently dead biological material, the chemical energy of the molecules is generally collected through the process of combustion.

Show moreThere are several types of framing that can be used on a greenhouse. The frames are made of wood, galvanized steel, or aluminum. Build-it-yourself greenhouse plans are usually for structures with wood or metal pipe frames. Plastic pipe materials generally are inadequate to meet snow and wind load requirements. Frames can be covered with glass, rigid fiberglass, rigid double-wall plastics, or plastic film. All have advantages and disadvantages. Each of these materials should be considered--it pays to shop around for ideas.

Show moreWe would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced signal processing from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released last year. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage.

Show morePerformance evaluation of structures has until now been based on evaluation of maximum displacements, interstory drifts, deformation patterns, ductility and other similar parameters; a relative economic loss estimation as a performance measure for the structure is the next step that follows, and is what has been investigated in this work. For this study a steel mid-rise structure was designed according to code provisions using modal spectral analysis, after which it was subjected to an Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) procedure to evaluate the capacity curve of the building. The capacity analysis was then used to determine damage states and compute fragility curves. Finally, economic relative loss values were assigned to represent each designated damage state, for which the mean damage ratio was computed (in terms of economic loss relative to total replacement cost) as a function of spectral displacement.
