Show moreIn this thesis, evidence for antiferromagnetic spin uctuations as the pairing glue in high temperature superconductors is presented through a modi ed Eliashberg analysis of experimental tunneling data of Bi2212 over a wide range of doping. In particular, the normalized conductance data of the junctions, from optimal to overdoped, will be tted at T=0K using d-wave Eliashberg equations where the spectral function is modeled after spin uctuation spectra seen in experiments. The corresponding real and imaginary diagonal and anomalous self-energy curves are extracted and compare well to photoemission experiments. This is followed by a temperature dependent Eliashberg analysis where the spectral function is now temperature dependent, based on trends seen in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. New results for temperature dependent self energy curves are also compared to experiment with slight deviations. Finally, the Josephson product is calculated as an independent check of the tunneling matrix used in tting the data.

FMS is primarily a collections company that is growing rapidly. Each year FMS receives accounts from private and government agencies and must collect from those accounts in order to receive a commission, their payment. The IPRO team had met with the sponsor many times over the course of the semester to gather requirements, map and layout FMS’ process model and in general have a better understanding of what FMS does. The team needed a better understanding of the problem and what the problem meant for FMS. FMS is in need of a tool that is able to track accounts over the course of their loan rehabilitation program quickly and effectively allow the tracking of trends over a period of time.

Show moreSudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for an estimated 325,000 deaths each year according to the Heart Rhythm Foundation. Cardiac arrest is different from a typical heart attack because it involves a complete stopping of the heart. Brain injury is likely to occur if the cardiac arrest is untreated for more than 5 minutes and a person cannot be revived after 10 minutes of no action. This is because the arrest sets off a chain of metabolic reactions, which leads to swelling of the brain tissue. Cardiac arrest results in ischemia reperfusion injury, which is when circulation is restored and high levels of oxygen rich blood rushes back into the brain causing brain damage. Decreasing the metabolism of the victim may result in a decrease of ischemia reperfusion injury. Reducing the oxygen level that enters the body when the victim revives and slowly increasing this level may also reduce reperfusion injury. However, current procedures dictate that 100% oxygen be given to cardiac arrest victim.

The concluding thought from that project was that the plant would need to select a source of greenwood to burn. The goal of IPRO 347 is to establish a plan for the Robbins Community Power Plant to gather and utilize the green waste of urban lumber. The main task is to research opportunities for RCP to gather a supply of greenwood. The items being researched are estimated expenses and profits, whom will be participating, the availability of our raw good—greenwood—and potential buyers.

Show moreE. coli O157:H7 and norovirus have each been responsible for outbreaks of foodborne illness involving fresh leafy green vegetables. Peroxyacetic acid (POAA) has the potential to be an effective sanitizer during commercial fresh-cut produce washing. The addition of high power ultrasound (HPU) to the washing system may enhance the POAA efficacy. The purpose of this study was to reduce E. coli O157:H7 and norovirus contamination during commercial fresh-cut lettuce washing using POAA and HPU. Fresh-cut romaine lettuce leaves were inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 or murine norovirus (MNV, a surrogate for the human norovirus) and washed by POAA and HPU. Cross-contamination was tested by washing clean leaves in contaminated processing water where pre-inoculated leaves were washed previously. A high level of cross-contamination (4.5-log CFU/g E. coli) occurred after uninoculated leaves were rinsed in contaminated wash water for 2 min. A subsequent 2 min wash in POAA alone or in combination with HPU reduced counts by approximately 1.2-log and 2.3-log, respectively. More than 2-log norovirus was removed from washing 2 min in either DI water or POAA. However infectious MNV washed from leaves was not detected in wash water containing POAA. Those results implied a high possibility of cross-contamination during freshproduce washing, and indicate that adding POAA and HPU in addition to washing water in wash water can reduce cross-contamination rate.

Show moreUnderground mining is a very high risk industry. There are many potential hazards in the underground mining these include fire, explosion, inundation, roof collapse, toxic gases, chemical pollution, etc. Over past centuries, in US alone, more than 100,000 miners lost their life in different accidents. The primary safety methods used in underground mines concentrate on the monitoring of the hazardous gases, fire detection and ventilation. Using advanced instruments and monitoring techniques have significantly reduced the accidents in the modern mines. However despite the advancement of these monitoring facilities, accidents still occur in underground mining annually around the world, and many miners were killed because they were trapped and unable to escape due to blocked of exit access. This thesis describes a new development of an emergency evacuation system in underground mines and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of the system. It is expected that the new system will greatly improve the emergency exit methods and save more lives in the future. The new emergency evacuation system consists of vertical concrete mineshaft, high capacity mineshaft elevators, surface terminal and underground support structures. In addition, the study of numerical simulation was carried out to observe the ground response during excavation. A typical ground profiles for underground mining in south part of China was used in this analysis. The results selected from shaft excavation simulation indicate that fluid drilling method effectively prevents the soil around mineshaft from collapse hazard. Compared to soil strength, soil stiffness has a significant influence on the soil response induced by excavating shafts.
