Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities and grounds. Three major spaces currently hold latent potential at the school: the abandoned convent/dormitory, library and inner courtyards, used correctly they can become a catalyst for positive change. It is proposed that the dormitory be torn down, in its place a “community center” would be constructed. The space will service extracurricular activities at the school, public outreach programs (i.e. youth groups, cub/girl scouts, etc.), club rooms and a new space for library books storage and usage. The second space being addressed is the library, given its current isolated position the space would be transformed into a communication and media center equipped with the technology necessary for worldwide communication. The third space addressed is the inner courtyards of the building. With six dispersed throughout the school grounds, they can become an active part of the recreational aspect of the school’s environment: places of social interaction, outdoor classrooms, etc. Additionally, the greening techniques proposed for the school’s facilities will include methods for efficiency improvement, education and school promotion.

Show moreThe invention disclosed is a process to allocate channels in a sectorized cellular network. A system of allocating cellular frequencies (channels) to the sectors among the cells within a tile is disclosed which maximizes channel set usage within the tile while avoiding co-channel interference between cells. According to the present system, no infrastructure rebuild is required. The disclosed approach further supports all currently used cellular technology. By alternating and rotating the channel assignments across sectors, what is a seemingly locally poor algorithm utilizing additional local channels is actually a globally good algorithm which is efficient in terms of the total number of channels used owing to short reuse distance and low number of cell types.

Show moreThis is the first semester of EnPro 350. Although the title suggests wood reclamation via arts and crafts, we have decided to expand the focus to reclamation via urban wood and lumber. We would like to start a business that addresses a need in the market for convenient removal of dead or infested trees in an urban setting. This encompasses all trees not located in forests or tree groves, and includes those found in urban setting. Often, the expense to remove one’s trees from his property is a time-intensive, confusing, and expensive process. We have decided to provide the service of tree health assessment, removal, processing, lumber certification, and marketing through utilizing the concept of vertical integration. Mission Statement: "To Satisfy Our Customers by Providing High Quality Wood from Urban Forests while Creating a Positive Change in the Environment"

Show moreThe following are our objectives for the Fall 2008 semester: • Re-evaluate and update the calculations done by the previous IPRO group for theoretical energy content at each stage of the process. • Develop a flow scheme for a small scale cogeneration plant using solid biomass fuel from corn stover. • Research current equipment capacities and methods of heat transfer which could be used to implement a small scale cogeneration power plant. • Construct as economic analysis. • Deliver a final report that describes the overall energy yields, feasibility and economic analyses and possibly some recommendations for a large scale project.

Show moreDistributed computing has become quintessential in the business world for its ability to connect people with information and resources. Two available technologies that provide distributed computing are Microsoft’s .NET and Sun’s J2EE. The objective of this Interprofessional Project is threefold: 1) to study both technologies, 2) to develop and analyze a list of criteria that are important to Bank One and how they develop software, and 3) to rate each criteria, which will help Bank One make an informed technology choice between .NET and J2EE, when reengineering legacy systems. At a high level, there are significant differences between these technologies. The .NET environment offers a host of programming languages and an integrated development environment. However, applications developed in .NET are limited to running on a Microsoft Operating System. J2EE offers one language, Java, but a wide selection of development tools. Applications developed in J2EE may run on several different operating systems. Bank One will have both .NET and J2EE available for development and by using Web Services they will be able to have separate modules communicate with each other.

Show moreForecasting is the procedure of making declarations about future events whose actual outcomes have not yet been observed. A lot of decisions are made based on predictions of future unknown events. Knowing the essence of forecasting, it is not hard to interpret what traffic volume forecasting is. Traffic volume forecasting is the process of estimating the number of vehicles that will be on a planned highway in the future. It plays important roles in different aspects of transportation and related field, such as highway level of service analysis, measure of effectiveness, highway improvement and expansion, geometric design and air quality analysis, etc. A good forecast is needed for decision making in future land use and transportation planning. City and county planners can provide useful information about land use planning and projected developments. County engineers may provide information about future county projects that may cause detours and changes in traffic patterns along a trunk highway. Highway designers need forecasted traffic volumes to ensure proper geometric designs. Since short term forecasting has been a hot topic on research, many statistical methods have been used, such as the mean, historical moving average, exponential smoothing, and autoregressive integrated moving average. Among them, Box Jenkins method (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) has been found as the best model on forecasting of time series data with seasonality and trend.

So far, we have been working on developing advanced time-domain simulator TS3ph, which implements simulation on electromechanical level but with three-phase completed network model to enable unbalanced modeling and simulation. In this paper, modeling and development work of TS3ph are being introduced. Positive-sequence equivalent and three-phase based models, including static var compensator, governor and three-phase induction motor models, are built and validated to evaluate their dynamic behaviors in transient state. Moreover, research work on single phase induction motor model development, including important motor behaviors such as motor stalling, is also introduced in this paper for voltage collapse and recovery study. This is indeed the first time to apply such model on electromechanical simulator as well.

Show moreThe objective of this IPRO is to choose an appropriate method (or combination of multiple methods) for desulfurizing coal before combustion takes place in a furnace for energy production. Three methods will be researched in order to find the best way of desulfurization- physical, chemical, and biological. Whichever method(s) is found to be the most effective at removing sulfur from coal will be chosen. After this decision the group will move forward and design the process equipment; later an economic assessment will be done to cost the equipment. All of the group’s goals will be completed within this semester.

Show moreWe have quite a few objectives for this IPRO. Our first objective is to research into both industrial and mass market applications of the Product Animations technology. After this first objective, we take 2 paths. The first leads to determining a screening criterion to select the best industrial prospects. We then plan to quantify the value propositions for the prospects selected from objective 2. When this is finished, we will create a deliverable simulation example, and finally write down any and all recommendations for future work with this IPRO. The other path leads to researching the idea or design of an ASP website. After this has been implemented, we want to use a PAI example of a milkshake machine, and show this on the ASP at IPRO day.

To design for a future Chicago‐area community, which first minimizes its energy consumption and then uses the most sustainable methods to fulfill the remaining needs of the inhabitants. Show moreThe aim of this project was to design a use for the area around the Michael Reese memorial. This area is currently unused and the city has asked for ideas to use the area. The previous IPRO had designed an extended living facility to be placed in the area. This was a good start but there is an extensive amount of land that is still unused. The city wishes to utilize this land so that the maximum amount of tax revenue can be seen. This semester, the IPRO team took what was suggested last year and improved it by developing a hotel, residential, and retail area. The plan called for different phases in which each area was either developed or added to during each phase. Extensive research was done to calculate number of units and location of the units. In the future the IPRO should future its research in the cost aspect of the project.
