Show moreFabrication Laboratories, or Fab Labs, were started as a community outreach program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology providing digital fabrication tools for rapid prototyping to the general public. The Museum of Science and Industry has partnered with IPRO to further develop the Fab Lab at their site. IPRO 333 has been rendered the task of working with the administration in the Fab lab of MSI to design methodologies for furthering the use of the laboratory and assisting in determining its end goals for both the museum and the community by working with the lab directors to broaden the possible uses of the lab, promoting membership at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and involving the community in science and technology programs at the museum. In order to accomplish our tasks we have broken into three main teams, each of which will focus on a different aspect of the lab. The first team will be responsible for creating events specific to the museum members, creating proposals for low‐cost, high‐profit activities for the lab, and possibly creating a website where users of the lab may sign up for time in the lab, reserve or order materials, and rent storage space for long term projects they wish to work on. The second team is responsible for integrating the Fab Lab into the current working exhibits as well as future exhibitions. The third team will be responsible for designing and creating new programs for users of the Fab Lab, such as the students enrolled in the Science Achievers program or museum members.

Show moreCritically ill patients harbor multi-drug resistant pathogens that can activate their virulence in the response to low nutrient conditions and host stress derived factors. It was recently shown that the oversupply of inorganic phosphate to bacterial environment can profoundly suppress the virulence of pathogens. Here we hypothesized that phosphateand/ or polyphosphate-loaded nanoparticles can present a tool to deliver and slowly release phosphate in pathogen-rich niche, thereby suppressing bacterial virulence. In this work, a designed study on effect of different phosphate levels (including the phosphate released from hydrogel nanoparticles) on virulence of P. aeruginosa is addressed. In this work, we developed formulations for preparing hexametaphosphate-loaded nanoparticles on the basis of that for phosphate loaded nanoparticles. We utilized inverse miniemulsion polymerization in the synthesis of these nanoparticles. Polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA, moleculat weight of 575 Da) and N-vinyl pyrrolidone (molecular weight: 111.14 Da ) were chosen to be the initial monomers because the main crosslinker, polyethylene glycol is a kind of biocompatible material that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Several parameter could be adjusted among the experiment. We selected the monomer mole fraction of PEGDA-575 as our parameter. After the synthesis, a nanoparticle size distribution between 110 nm and 150 nm was obtained. And these nanoparticles were proved to be able to release phosphate and hexametaphosphate as drug molecules. Although there were release bursts in the test of release kinetics, the crosslink density could be adjusted in following researches. The second part of this study is to test the virulence suppression effect of the nanoparticles in in vitro experiment on a kind of opportunistic pathogen, P. aeruginosa. This kind of gram-negative bacteria is one of the common intestinal microbial communities. We presented the strategy of suppressing virulence while containing rather than killing the bacteria. As a result, polyphosphate loaded nanoparticles showed to be the most effective one among several experiment groups. This result gave this study a promising future in further research in several aspects, such as in vivo test in biomedical and biomedical engineering.

Show moreThe purpose of this IPRO is to develop a website to host a user-friendly online database of green technologies information for the Electrical Contractors’ Association of the City of Chicago. This website will involve providing data on green electrical products with cut sheets, pricing and distributor information, return on investment projections, and LEED certification facts. The use of this website should help create a well informed transition from industry standard electrical products, to green alternative products, as well as cut down on miscommunication between architects and electrical contractors.

Show moreThe main problem which our project faces is what to plan to build in the Michael Reese site, which was recently demolished to make room for the Olympic village. Since Chicago did not win the bid for the 2016 Olympics, the site remains vacant and unused. The basis of the IPRO is to develop a plan for this site, and, specifically, to design a building to serve as an anchor for the area. This anchor building should serve the community while still remaining economical.

Show moreIPRO 347 is a continuation of an IPRO, which previously explored ways to utilize waste heat and CO2 from Robbins Community Power Plant. The concluding thought from that project was that the plant would need to select a source of greenwood to burn. The goal of IPRO 347 is to establish a plan for the Robbins Community Power Plant to gather and utilize the green waste of urban lumber. The main task is to research opportunities for RCP to gather a supply of greenwood. The items being researched are estimated expenses and profits, whom will be participating, the availability of our raw good—greenwood—and potential buyers.

One sub-team will create a passive device, which uses a mechanical device to provide tactile feedback to the swimmer. The other sub-team will create an active device which uses special electronic devices such as a sonar based device to help guide the swimmer. These devices will be repeatedly tested and updated to help increase the independence of blind and visually impaired individuals exercise and further improve their quality of life.

Show moreThe purpose of this project that will begin in Spring 2007 is to increase the "footprint" of health care workers in rural areas of India, that is, leverage the time and expertise of the workers to achieve a bigger and broader benefit to those who need health care. The basic question is how to increase the ability of health care workers to see more patients, increase their diagnostic capabilities and track patients on a regular basis within the existing rural environment

Show moreThe team for IPRO 317 is tasked with working on developing a pervasive training program. This program will integrate various psychological and technological applications. As such the team working on this project has split into 2 groups to work on these respective applications. The idea of pervasive training addresses a dire need in the field of corporate training. This concept allows companies to put their employees through training by making them self-aware. This method of training also enables employers to train their employees with minimal disruption to productivity. Our intention is to implement this training through the employee’s hand held devices. Each employee would select a group of peer to fill out an assessment, the combination of the peer assessments, an assessment performed by the employee’s supervisor and one by the employee themselves would constitute the evaluation of employee. The employee would then receive a series of periodic e-mails to their mobile device that they would then need to respond to in order to complete this training. After a pre-designated amount of time for this training the employee will fill out a new survey and receive their results. A significant motivator for this training is that it is purely voluntary and allows the employee to receive these evaluations without their employer knowing any of the results aside from completion status. From our research team we hope to derive a set of themes by which to rate the employee as well as survey questions. What this will lead to is a group of teachable moments. These moments will be reminders for the employee based upon the results of their surveys. Once this system is derived the research team will begin a search for appropriate test organizations for us to run our trials on. While this is being done our development team will build a website to distribute and compile these surveys. This site will also send out our teachable moments and maintain this data. All of this will be done on a desktop computer that will be converted into a server. Once testing begins, this team will be responsible for assisting the test users in the survey and teaching process. These team members will provide support for any issues the users will have as well as for maintaining the website integrity during this process. Ultimately once this initial phase is done our hope is that this product will move immediately into production. Our hope is that with the success of our project this will become a new standard in the training of employees. With this being the case employers will be able to train more employees with less loss of production. Our goal is for this to be used with every employee and not just those in management.

Show moreCompetitive cyclists around the world are using technology to monitor training data in order to improve their training methods. Power measurements are important to such training, however existing power meters are expensive and the cyclist must replace existing crank sets. Thus, IPRO 324 intends to develop a power meter that not only can be applied to any crank set but that will accurately collect and transmit data to current cycling computers as well as cost significantly less than comparable systems.
