Show moreThe purpose of the IPRO this semester was to further develop the prototype of a cardiovascular display for the prenatal to newborn blood flow system for the Museum of Science and Industry. The museum’s main goal was to have a display that would emphasize the changes in pressure within the body before, during, and after birth. To accomplish this, the group decided the goal of the semester was to recreate a visual presentation, which could 5 ultimately be on a touch screen monitor, and bench-top model as the display. In addition to the creation of the prototype, it was then brought to the museum for testing.

Show moreOver the years there has been intensive research on visual prosthesis around the world and significant technological advancements have been made. The Intracortical Visual Prosthesis Team (IVP) at IIT has been researching and developing a procedure as well as a device which will be implanted within the human visual cortex. The device consists of sub-miniature electrodes which will artificially stimulate the visual cortex by introducing electrical currents in to the cortex. The IIT Team has reached a point in their 10 year development process where they would like to proceed with implanting the device in a volunteer in the next few years. Implantation of a device which provides artificial vision is an extraordinarily complex process. In the initial stages the medical and engineering aspects are the most prevalent ones, but as the project moves forward there are some questions that inevitably must be answered or at least considered. These questions deal much less with the technology and much more with the volunteers that will eventually have these complex devices implanted. To try and answer some of these questions, in IPRO 306 we will look into various medical, political, engineering, ethical, media and psychological issues that we believe may become of greater importance as the project progresses into the implementation stage. We will also look into the public relations aspect as well as some political and psychological issues. Based on our research and understanding we will provide several issues that we see as needing to be addressed in the future and recommend possible solutions to them.

Show moreThe City of Chicago has been nominated as the U.S. Bid City for the 2016 Olympic Games. If Chicago was to win the honorable tile of the Host City, one of the main challenges that the organizers will face is to provide a temporary housing for all athletes, organizers, media and spectators involved. While the athletes, coaches and other major players will be situated in Olympic village, thousands if not millions of others, will face the challenge of seeking the affordable housing for the length of stay. Our IPRO proposes economical and environmentally friendly solution to this problem. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are abundant in Chicago area and to convert them into housing objects. These second hand products will be modified and equipped with electrical, plumbing and HVAC installations, making them aesthetically and functionally comparable to similar conventional housing objects. Following the completion of the Olympic Games, these housing containers could be easily converted into affordable permanent housing for the residents of the Chicago South side. This will allow local residentsto benefit from higher quality affordable housing without being forced to relocate from their neighborhoods. Considering that housing accommodations in Chicago during Olympics will be highly priced most of the construction costs can be covered in this manner. Our IPRO hopes to make esthetically appealing and practical permanent housing out of materials that can be recycled twice: first from the shipping containers and second from the Olympic Housing. We also plan to explore particular needs of temporary residents during Olympics and later permanent residents as well as to explore what would be the most effective transformation methods from one purpose to the other. These housing objects must appeal to many people from different cultural backgrounds, and provide them with good living conditions for a short period of time. Also, we must investigate what makes affordable housing possible and what are the mistakes that the City of Chicago made in the past with similar projects. These housing structures must be fully functional for the future permanent residents, but they also must be designed in accordance with rules and regulations by the City of Chicago Department of Buildings so that they are safe and aesthetically appealing for all of the other local residents. In conclusion, the container housing is an affordable and environmentally friendly solution to housing needs of numerous individuals involved in the Olympic events while it also provides a long term housing opportunity for the residents of the local community.

Show moreNAVTEQ is the corporate sponsor for IPRO 305. NAVTEQ is one of the world’s largest digital mapping companies. With competitors, such as Google, NAVTEQ aims to outdo the competition by providing their clients with robust quality mapping data. NAVTEQ achieves this by employing over 1,000 geographic analysts who’s sole job is to ensure that the data on their maps is unique and, above all, accurate from each of NAVTEQ’s 80,000+ sources[citation 1]. On their quest to provide their clients with robust data, NAVTEQ has identified the need for user- generated content. This is data that a user of a GPS mapping system can enter in for themselves. With this recognition of usergenerated mapping data, NAVTEQ pursues the need to be the world’s most robust digital mapping data provider.

Show moreVery little unbiased information is available to the general public about energy needs, concerns, and sources. The philosophy behind IPRO 332 is that people should be sufficiently educated about their own energy choices to be able think critically about the corresponding consequences. This IPRO team will build on the work underway since Spring 2007 in developing effective methods for educating high school students about energy and sustainability, expanding our outreach to junior high school students. In addition, the team will: (1) Construct a Teaching Kit to extend the reach of the program beyond the Chicago metropolitan area to provide educators with the materials they will need to present the modules on their own and tailor it to their classrooms; (2) Complete the full-scale launch of the organization’s website, www.howmanyearths.com, to enrich the learning experience, provide a professional contact interface and build a community of engaged teachers and students; (3) Execute a formal marketing plan to build awareness of our efforts, establish our brand image, promote our work, and greatly increase visibility; and (4) Pursue grants and funding with the goal of establishing a viable, long-term, not-for-profit organization.

To design for a future Chicago‐area community, which first minimizes its energy consumption and then uses the most sustainable methods to fulfill the remaining needs of the inhabitants. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living. This community will also serve as an example to Chicago‐area municipalities about the benefits of sustainable planning, design, and living.

Show moreChicago is the third largest intermodal freight hub in the world. As a result, there is need for efficient routing of trains throughout the Chicago area. One aspect of railroad transport that directly affects the overall efficiency of the rail system is how easily accessible train intermodal yards are for trucks going to and through the intermodal yards. With this in mind, the overall purpose and objective of IPRO 307 is to improve the truck flow in and around an intermodal facility at Harvey, IL which is owned by Canadian National (CN) lines. CN is one of the six major railroads that serve the Chicago area. The intermodal facility at Harvey is surrounded by a network of highways including Interstates 80, 57, 294, 94 and 65. Interstates 294 and 80 cross directly overhead of the intermodal yard. In order to make truck flow around the intermodal yard more efficient, IPRO 307 will look into the addition of ramps and frontage roads, including a ramp that would be based off of interstates 80/294. A ramp connecting the major interstate to the intermodal facility would allow for easier access to the intermodal facility by trucks, thereby bettering the efficiency of the intermodal facility as a whole.

Show moreThe IPRO 311 Team’s overall objective is to create a conceptual design and branding of IIT as an eco-friendly campus, promoting sustainability to students, faculty and visitors. IPRO 311 is sponsored by IIT Marketing and Communication Department which seeks to portray a message of the university’s accomplishments in the area of sustainability and future capabilities. Furthermore, this project is driven by the interests of two IIT trustees with an interest to enhance the visibility of the IIT Main Campus from the I-94 expressway and other challenging vantage points (US Cellular Field, Sears Tower, McCormick Place, 2016 Olympics venues, etc.) Disney Imagineering is project partner participating with the Team through brainstorming discussion assisting the Team in building the IIT Brand. Initially, the focus of the IPRO was the development of signage that could represent sustainability and be situated at a prominent location on campus visible to the public. After several class discussions, the vision of the IRPO broadened, to develop an overall campus sustainable conceptual design, incorporating signage as one of the elements. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable concepts. There are several interrelated objectives: (1) Build IIT brand awareness and campus visibility in ways that are aesthetically pleasing, exciting and memorable. (2) Create an eco-friendly, self-sustained project that promotes general awareness of activities within the university among students, staff, faculty and the community. (3) Play a leadership role in supporting Mayor Daley's vision for creating a ultra-green Chicago by 2020. (4) Create an IIT campus sustainability plan for future IPROs to build upon.
