Show moreThe direction IPro 307 “Intermodal Container Transport” is taking for the 2008 semester is geared toward alternative energy technologies as well as expansion of the capacity and efficiency of a designated rail transfer yard. The selected exploration site is the Norfolk Southern rail transfer yard at 47th street near the Dan Ryan Expressway. Since there is a large amount of on-site equipment (Mi-Jack side loaders, cranes, and yard hostlers), the possibility of introducing alternative fuel technologies exists and can provide a cleaner and more cost-effective solution to air pollution and rising fuel costs. The group will be focusing efforts on using wind power in parallel with compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel, as well as designing innovative ways to improve yard capacity and efficiency. The ultimate goal of this IPro is to develop a plan to increase yard efficiency and output, while at the same time incorporating green technology as an alternative energy source for the facility equipment.

Show more3 billion people cook their meals over open fires on primitive stoves inside their homes. Indoor air pollution from those primitive stoves kills 1.5 million people worldwide. Furthermore, indoor air pollution is fifth most costly environmental degradation issue in the Peru. Previous IPRO 325 classes have made stove for Peru. However, the stoves made from previous IPRO 325 classes did not work properly. The purpose of this subteam of the spring 2010 IPRO 325 is to improve the stove and help Peru realistically.

Show moreChicago is the third largest intermodal freight hub in the world. Joliet, being so close, makes a great place as a depot to intercept much of Chicago’s goods, it is also far enough away to avoid further congestion in the city. Currently one hub exists in Joliet (Elwood BNSF), another is being developed (Centerpoint), and one is being proposed off of Lorenzo road. Our sponsor, Mi-Jack, has asked us to come up with solutions to make these freight hubs more efficient.

In doing this we look to expand on work that has been done in previous semesters in addition to developing modules for a wider age base. Previously the modules have been focused on High School and Middle School students; this semester, we look to develop a program for elementary school classrooms in addition to post-high school education.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO 341 is to assist Versatility Tool Works with the design, testing, and marketing of an industrial strength tool cabinet. Ideally, one or more of the drawers in the cabinet should be capable of holding 450 pounds of equipment, and have a lifespan of 20,000 cycles. (One (1) cycle is defined as one opening and closing of the drawer.) Extra features to include in the design of the cabinet will also be investigated to try to make the cabinet more marketable. However, it will be important to first determine what progress has been made thus far so that this semester’s design improvements can be better demonstrated.

Show moreIn 1983, a group of students from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology began work on a project that described what a house of the future would entail. This team ended up winning the grand prize (10,000,000 yen) at the first International Design Competition held in Osaka, Japan because their creative and innovative ideas about how a house of the future should be built 22 years later, in 2005, IIT’s Interprofessional Projects program started the Sustainable Village Project, an endeavor to build a sustainable and environmentally-aware community on the IIT campus. Part of this project was to design the house of the future in such a fashion as would fit in with the Sustainable Village. Through use of research both in the 1983 House of the Future, as well as the House of the Future developed in the spring of 2005, this semester IPRO 301 – Back to the House of the Future had the task of establishing a system of ideas and concepts which could be globally integrated to change the way modern housing is viewed and approached by builders and residents alike. Instead of simply being a structure that disrupts the environment and depletes natural resources, the house of the future will allow for the building of units which can be integrated into the environment and are more sustainable and efficient. By developing a methodology based on next-generation design principles, key technological advances, and considerations for building regulations and human health and safety concerns, IPRO 301 will lay a universal framework for constructing Houses of the Future of all shapes and sizes.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO 362 is to understand the environment in which disaster victims are found and the human needs involved. Additionally, understanding the medical standards of sanitation, sterility and environmental control conditions that are expected in an operating room are all central to developing a humancentered design. In order to be able to ensure the success of the M.O.R.E. Life project, design needs to focus on the following: MEDICAL PERSONNEL •Provide the necessary tools and equipment which medical personnel need in order to perform medical interventions •Identify and provide a surgical environment satisfying necessary sanitary, given the environmental limitations in a disaster relief situation. STRUCTURE/PORTABILITY •Work to make the mobile operating room (M.O.R.E) design as compact as possible, while still keeping sanitary standards as high as possible. FILTRATION •Design an effective filtration system that will allow for environmental control within the structure. •Address sanitation by taking into account airborne pathogens can be filtered out of the air. POWER •Design an energy-efficient power system for the mobile operating theatre, considering alternative energy sources. DESIGN •Create and refine a design for the operating theatre, including a carrying case. •Replicate standard operating room conditions in the mobile version. •Conduct a market analysis to identify key stakeholders, advantages and disadvantages of existing products and current costs.
