Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester are to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research. The research conducted this semester will help us transform the space into a more sustainable working environment. Since the ultimate goal is rather ambitious, our goal for this particular semester is to implement an energy plan which will become the basis off of which the future IPRO’s will continue towards the ultimate goal. We also intend to clear the space so that the developed plan can be tested.

Show moreThe goal of this project was to determine the feasibility of using the heated waste water from the Braidwood Generating Station for use in greenhouse applications. Though extremely efficient, the Braidwood Generating Station, like all nuclear power plants, still wastes two-thirds of all energy generated and pumps 1.5 million gallons per minute of warm waste water into its cooling lake. All of this thermal energy pumped into the cooling lake is wasted. IPRO 342 was looking to change that.

Show moreThis project aims to help visually impaired individuals to exercise independently. While the primary focus this semester will be enabling visually impaired swimmers to swim independently, other physical activities will be researched for the purpose of choosing three activities to be considered for future projects. A passive device, which is a mechanically-based device that offers tactile feedback to the swimmer, and an active device, which is a sonarbased device, will both be developed in parallel to aid the swimmers. This project, overall, could potentially increase the independence of blind and visually impaired individuals, as well as improve their quality of life.

Show morehe proliferation of the Internet in recent years has led to more people using, and being confused by, computer interfaces. Usability testing is a formal laboratory procedure used to identify problems with user interfaces during the development of a product. It involves creating tasks for users to accomplish and watching whether they can complete the given tasks. More importantly, the testers observe how users interact with the interface in an attempt to understand why they perform the actions they do. The testing allows developers to identify issues with their designs early enough in the product development cycle to be able to change them, saving money and resources later, in addition to creating an easier-to-use product. Unfortunately, many companies do not implement usability testing or do so too late into development to make any substantive changes suggested by the testing. The result is often a product that is needlessly hard to use. The team will conduct usability tests during the semester to gain first-hand experience in all aspects of usability testing. This project will test the interfaces of products produced by other IPROs and will work closely with other teams to identify and address issues arising from their work so that students on this team and others can appreciate the value of usability testing and designing with the end users in mind.

Show moreThe goal of this IPRO research/design project is to establish an ongoing energy-based architectural studio. The studio will focus on a specific project, but in an investigative and experimental manner. The selected project is the Trump Tower, currently under design in the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. The end result of each project is expected to consist of cutting edge architectural solution, which will help provide insight into methods for integrating environmental concerns into architectural design process. The IPRO team will apply the concept of the Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) system, particularly in applications used for exterior wall systems. Also wind energy will be introduced. During the semester students will be directed focusing on extensive research, data collection, elements and component design, putting this research information together and work towards a total building design. The studio will benefit from previous experiences which can be accessed http://ipro.iit.edu/~323. This project will be run in consultation with Professors Professors Mohammadi (CAE), Megri (CAE), Al Hallaj (CHEE), and faculty from mechanical engineering to be determined. The project also benefits from participation by partners Peter Ellis and Ray Clark from the firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP.

Show moreCalamos Investments provides professional money management services to major corporations, public and private institutions, pension funds, insurance companies and individuals and is an investment advisor to open-end and closed-end funds. The company was founded in 1977 by John Calamos. The company’s cornerstone strategy is risk management. Calamos Investments underwent rapid growth, from managing $5 billion in assets in 1999 to over $45 in 2006. During this period, a lot of the personal touch that permeated the interaction between clients and the company’s leadership was lost. The number of clients grew too quickly. A high level of personal interaction between John Calamos and its core investors became difficult to attain. The IPRO 303 team attempted to digitally leverage John Calamos by researching and piloting new methods of customer interaction utilizing digital communication technologies.

Show moreOur team desires to create a plan that enables living in a sustainable manner at an affordable price. To do that, we are using a site in Evanston as the basis for a design that minimizes energy consumption while still being an attractive marketable solution to current home buyers within the city. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living and also serve as an example to Chicago-area municipalities about the benefits of affordable sustainable planning and design.

Show moreHelping in Orthopedic and Prosthetic Education
Sponsorship: H.O.P.E.
The overall goal of our IPRO team is to create a curriculum and a program that helps all practitioners and employees better understand how to utilize and build upon their knowledge and talents in the medical work setting. This will be achieved by promoting the awareness of treatments available, organizing demonstrations and lectures to help educate others, developing a course load for an accredited student. By achieving the aforementioned, our IPRO team hopes to increase the availably of funding to help create public awareness as well as to increase the quality and durability of the products we produce. In addition, we hope to expand on the QR Code invented by the Japanese. With this invention, we hope to develop a low cost solution for developing nations to be able to have quick and easy access to maintenance instructions, use instructions, and contact information of medical professionals. With the QR Code, we hope that potential problems will be able to be solved on site, wherever one may be.

An additional objective of the team is to work in coordination with Ph.D. students to simulate a hybrid electric bus system that is scheduled to have practical implementations by the end of the year. All vehicle simulations and structured testing will be performed using ADVISOR, as well as other software packages available in the Power Electronics and Motor Drives Laboratory at IIT. Show moreMost of the existing large scale urban food depositories / pantries are based on a model of food production and distribution which has not changed in the last forty years. It is essentially the same model used by large private grocery chains, involving off-site food acquisition (either through production or donation) and dissemination to large distribution centers. In some cases, these distribution centers are then accessed by either individuals or organizations which truck the goods to smaller, local urban distribution points. In other cases, patrons are required to visit the large facility, which it typically in a less accessible location.
