Show moreLocated in Oakbrook, IL the architects and engineers of IPRO 315 will design a 22 story hotel. Together architects and engineers will modify and re analyze a structure created by pervious designers, and select any new materials for construction. In creating the hotel students will be responsible for the structural analysis of columns, beams, foundation, steel, and concrete design required to insure all serviceability requirements. The students will be required to follow the 2006 International Building Code, and secure the safety of all possible occupants. Management, leadership, ethics, and teamwork will be an integral part of building a large scale structure as students learn to work together on a “real life” project.

Show moreStatistical process monitoring (SPM) is used in food processing industries to improve productivity and product quality. SPM can also provide information to operators on how close a process is to non-compliance to product safety limits, and carry out periodic checks of sensor accuracy at high frequency. Traditional SPM tools such as Shewhart charts are not appropriate for continuous food processes because of autocorrelation in data. Four alternative SPM techniques are presented and applied to high temperature short time (HTST) dairy pasteurization. The study attempted to achieve compliance of the HTST process operation with the recommended Pasteurized Milk Ordinance by providing a margin between the alarm limits of the monitoring chart and the safety limits. Monitoring of residuals and parameter change detection techniques ave used for monitoring processes with autocorrelated variables. Hotelling's T-2 and residuals of canonical variates techniques are used for monitoring multivariable processes.

Show moreThe heavy quark content associated with gauge boson production is of great interest to studies of QCD. These events probe the gluon and heavy-quark parton distribution functions of the proton, and also provide a measurement of the rate of final state gluon splitting to heavy favor. In addition, gauge boson plus heavy quark events are representative of backgrounds to Higgs, single top, and supersymmetric particle searches. Recent work with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron has measured the cross-section of several gauge boson plus heavy flavor production processes, including the first Tevatron observation of specific charm process p͞p → W + c. Results are found to be in agreement with NLO predictions that include an enhanced rate of g → c͞c =b͞b splitting. Lastly, a new analysis promises to probe a lower pT (c) region than has yet been explored, by fully reconstructing D* → D^0 (Kπ)π decays in the full CDF dataset (9:7 fb^1).

Show moreThe primary aim of this study is to address the neuropsychological functioning of adults with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) by examining the association of illness-related and psychosocial factors with cognition. The neuropsychological functioning of adults with SCD will be compared to that of controls matched on gender, race, and age. There is considerable evidence for neuropsychological complications associated with SCD (Anie, 2005; Schatz, 2004). Much of the cognitive deficits are thought to be the result of cerebrovascular accidents commonly suffered by this population. Studies of cognition in children with SCD suggest that cognitive complications tend to increase with age. Particularly implicated are deficits in attention, concentration, and executive functioning. Although the specific neuropsychological morbidity is not as clearly understood for adults with SCD as it is for children, global cognitive impairment within this population has been documented. In addition, pain negatively affects cognitive functioning in both children and adults (Libon et al., 2010). The pattern of impairment was suggested to be the result of additional demands on attentional capacity. However, the relationship between pain and cognitive performance in adults with sickle cell disease is less clear. As a result of frequent pain, individuals with SCD often report a low evaluation of quality of life particularly as a result of health complaints (Anie, 2005). Thus, the inter-dynamic of health -related quality of life, pain , and cognitive dysfunction is not entirely clear within the sickle cell population and therefore warrants examination.

Show moreVibrational control is an open-loop control strategy implemented by fast zero-average oscillations in the input variables of a system. It has been previously shown that vibrational control of an exothermic reaction in a CSTR, introduced via oscillations in the input flow rate, modifies the dynamic behavior of the reactor and enables its stabilized operation in the unstable steady-state region. In the present paper it is shown that simultaneous vibrations in input flow rate and concentration lead, in addition to a reduction of the amplitude of oscillations in reactor temperature and/or increase in reactant conversion. It is also shown that the phase shift between the vibrations of the two input variables affects the behavior of the system as well as the amplitude, the frequency and the form of forcing functions.

Show moreA bifunctional ligand that can rapidly form a stable complex with a metal while conjugated to a tumor-targeting moiety is essential for targeted therapy and imaging of cancer. New bifunctional chelators in the NETA and DEPA series were developed for targeted radiation cancer therapy. The chelators showed rapid complexation kinetics with 90Y and 177Lu, and the corresponding radiolabeled complexes were stable in vitro and in vivo. Trastuzumab, Panitumumab, and c(RGDyK) conjugates (targeting HER-2, HER-1, and integrin αvβ3, respectively) of the novel bifunctional ligands were prepared. The conjugates displayed fast complexation kinetics with 90Y, 177Lu, and 205/6Bi, and the antibody and peptide conjugates labeled with 90Y, 177Lu, or 205/6Bi exhibited excellent stability and tumor targeting in mice bearing human colorectal cancer (LS-174T). Transferrin (Tf) and bile acid (BA) conjugates of novel chelators in the NE3TA series were prepared for targeted iron chelation therapy (ICT) and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging applications of cancer. Tf and BA conjugates of NE3TA had high cytotoxicity on HeLa, HT29, and PC3 cancer cells. The Tf-N-NE3TA and BA-N-NE3TA also displayed rapid complexation kinetics with 64Cu, and the Tf and BA conjugates of N-NE3TA labeled with 64Cu were stable and had high cellular uptake in HeLa and PC3 cancer cells. Tf-N-NE3TA was further conjugated with a fluorescence dye (Cy5.5) to develop targeted theranostic agent of cancer. Tf-N-NE3TA-Cy5.5 showed great radiolabeling efficiency with 64Cu, and the Tf-N-NE3TA-Cy5.5 labeled with 64Cu exhibited high cellular uptake in HeLa, HT29, and PC3 cancer cells. In summary, we have developed new bifunctional ligands having excellent chelation chemistry of 90Y, 177Lu, 205/6Bi, and 64Cu, and the tumor-specific antibody and peptide conjugates of the novel bifunctional chelators have a great potential for targeted cancer therapy and imaging as well as theranostic applications of cancer.

Show moreReliability and energy are two of the top major concerns in the development of today's supercomputers. To build a powerful machine while at the same time satisfying reliability requirement and energy constraint, HPC scientists continue to seek a better understanding of system and component behaviors. Toward this end, modern systems are deployed with various monitoring and logging tools to track reliability and energy data during system operations. Since these data contain important information about system reliability and energy, they are valuable resources for understanding system behaviors. However, as system scale and complexity continue to grow, the process of collecting system data to extracting meaningful knowledge out of overwhelming reliability and energy data faces a number of key challenges. To address these challenges, my work consists of three parts, including data preprocessing, data analysis and advanced modeling.

Show moreMuch information available on the Web is in video format. The problem with this medium is users cannot comment on particular scenes within the videos and there is no method of searching for specific content within the videos. The team proposes to develop a system that will allow users to make fine-grained comments on scenes within the video and then to use these comments to aid in search within videos.

Show moreThis project is a mixed-use high rise which will incorporate the program of the newly constructed high rise buildings of retail, hotel, and condominiums with the program of the existing Powerhouse Arts District, art gallery, auction house, art work spaces, and artist lofts. In order for this combination of program to occur and to retain developer interest in this high rise tower, relationships between the program were investigated. Typical “inefficient” or unleasable spaces in a traditional high rise were used as opportunities to incorporate these art district programs into the site. Artist lofts were design on the perimeter of the mechanical floors to take advantage of double height spaces as well as privacy. Art galleries, and an auction house was incorporated on the lower service level in order to take advantage of loading/unloading access. Art work spaces were designed around program which required column free spacing and a sunken art plaza was designed to add additional frontage to different retail and art programs located below grade. The design of both the high rise and its program intends to restore the deteriorating identity of the Powerhouse Arts District in Jersey City, NJ.

Show moreThe production of weak vector bosons in association with jets and their properties are intensively studied using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector. In this proceedings, we will show the cross section measurement of the electroweak production of a Z boson in association with 2 jets at √s = 8 TeV, including a new data-driven approach and studies on the hadronic activity in the region between the two tagging jets. The azimuthal correlations and event shapes in Z + jets events at √s= 7 TeV are also presented.

Show moreA knowledge-based system (KBS) was designed for automated system identification, process monitoring, and diagnosis of sensor faults. The real-time KBS consists of a supervisory system using G2 KBS development software linked with external statistical modules for system identification and sensor fault diagnosis. The various statistical techniques were prototyped in MATLAB, converted to ANSI C code, and linked with the G2 Standard Interface. The KBS automatically performs all operations of data collection, identification, monitoring, and sensor fault diagnosis with little or no input from the user. Navigation throughout the KBS is via menu buttons on each user-accessible screen. Selected process variables are displayed on charts showing the history of the variables over a period of time. Multivariate statistical tests and contribution plots are also shown graphically. The KBS was evaluated using simulation studies with a polymerization reactor through a nonlinear dynamic model. Both normal operation conditions as well as conditions of process disturbances were observed to evaluate the KBS performance. Specific user-defined disturbances were added to the simulation, and the KBS correctly diagnosed both process and sensor faults when present.
