Show moreThis study focuses on performance assessment and monitoring of model predictive control systems. A methodology is proposed to determine a benchmark and monitor model predictive control performance on-line. A performance measure based on the ratio of historical and achieved performance is used for monitoring and a ratio of design and achieved performance is used for diagnosis. Performance monitoring and diagnosis of causes for poor performance are integrated. A real-time knowledge-based system is developed to supervise monitoring and diagnosis activities. Case studies with linear and nonlinear models of an evaporator illustrate the methodology and limitations of linearity assumptions.

Show moreThe logistic regression model is an important generalized linear model for the categorical data. The maximum likelihood estimation is mostly used in estimating the parameters of the logistic regression model. However, the maximum likelihood estimation is very sensitive to outliers which will cause the inaccuracies of the fitted parameters and model selection in high-dimensional regression. Chi and Scott (2014) demonstrated by simulation that minimizing the integrated square error or L2 estimation (L2E) is a robust method to fit 2-class categorical models. They also showed that the L2E estimation method can select the right model even in the presence of many outliers in high dimensional scenarios. In my thesis, I extended the L2E estimation method from 2-class to 3-class based on the MM algorithm by Chi and Scott (2014). Then I demonstrated the properties above for 2-class categorical models are also applicable to 3-class ones.

Show moreThis is the first semester of EnPro 350. Although the title suggests wood reclamation via arts and crafts, we have decided to expand the focus to reclamation via urban wood and lumber. We would like to start a business that addresses a need in the market for convenient removal of dead or infested trees in an urban setting. This encompasses all trees not located in forests or tree groves, and includes those found in urban setting. Often, the expense to remove one’s trees from his property is a time-intensive, confusing, and expensive process. We have decided to provide the service of tree health assessment, removal, processing, lumber certification, and marketing through utilizing the concept of vertical integration. Mission Statement: "To Satisfy Our Customers by Providing High Quality Wood from Urban Forests while Creating a Positive Change in the Environment"

Show moreThe purpose of the Inflatable Greenhouse IPRO was to design an air supported structure that was cheaper than the current greenhouse solution. The structural support of current greenhouses creates shadows that prevent an even sunlight exposure for the plants. The other issues we investigated were the cost, size, thermal control, and pest control of current greenhouse designs. The majority of the cost for a traditional greenhouse goes towards the structural support therefore an air supported structure should be significantly cheaper. The basic greenhouse design is oriented towards human occupants and is subsequently quite large. If the greenhouse was instead designed to house the plants already in the ground, just for the months that they needed shelter to grow, the cut back in size would also greatly affect the cost. We also looked into the thermal qualities of greenhouses. The very nature of a greenhouse absorbs and traps the light and heat of the sun. Without a cooling system a greenhouse can overheat and harm the plants within it. The other problem we found with current greenhouses was the pest control solution. Most greenhouses use strong chemicals that require special training for use and safety. Even the “organic” solutions use natural chemicals in concentrations considered toxic. Our goal was to design a greenhouse that would address each of these issues with a cheap and practical solution.

Show moreThe Spring 2005 IPRO 305 team will be continuing the efforts of ongoing research at IIT in the realm of Pervasive Computing. The team will be focusing on the challenge of integrating Pervasive Computing into a specific aspect of the IIT campus. The overall vision of the IPRO 305 team is to continue efforts to develop an application called HawkTour – a virtual Illinois Institute of Technology tour guide. HawkTour will provide a completely new approach to the campus tour at IIT. The application has been designed to run on Tablet PC’s or other devices with similar computing capabilities, and provides the user with general campus information while guiding the user around campus and maintaining complete awareness of the user’s current location and intent, thereby adapting the tour to the user’s own personal preferences. The objective for this semester’s team is to refine the application and come up with a new version with an optimized content database, a more sophisticated hardware interface, improve the mapping methodology, work on the user interface and scale of the application to simpler devices such as cell phones and personal digital assistants.

Show morecontain the employees necessary to run and maintain the multiple programs which will be controlled by the Student Recycling Business. This business will also be in charge of creating events which will help to get the students, staff and faculty of IIT more involved in the recycling process. For prolonged success, the marketing component of any business plan is possibly one of the most essential. Within a student-run business, the need for campus support is enough motivation to implement an effective marketing strategy to advertise the products and gain an appropriate reputation. In terms of recycling, to achieve desired results for a specific objective requires that the target audience is fully informed. Thus, an awareness campaign must be introduced before any expected business success is observed. As shown by the provided data, the large diversity on campus has and most likely will always remain a unique attribute of IIT. Not only do the ethnicity and gender size vary from one category to the next, but the large demographic range (age) that is not presented due to unattainable information is also a significant factor in target marketing. Having language barriers and large generational gaps makes it difficult to impose a single marketing strategy all over campus. A successful marketing plan will overcome these obstacles with ideas that integrate all backgrounds and avoid cultural seclusion.

Show moreRailroad tank cars are efficient vehicles for the transport of large quantities of liquid commodities in North America. These commodities include foodstuffs as well as a wide range of chemicals use in the process industries. Transport Canada and the U.S. Department of Transportation collaborate in the formulation of rules and regulations for the transportation of hazardous commodities. While the incidence of non-accident release (NARs) is very small there is nevertheless a further collaborative effort by shippers and car owners alike to reduce the incidence of NARs to zero. One approach in reducing NARs is to develop a means to identify small leaks immediately, while the vehicle is in transit. The IPRO team will identify and evaluate methods for detecting small leaks using car mounted sensors and alerting the shipper of the leak automatically form remote locations. This includes consideration of how to mount sensors and telemetry devices, log data, predict unacceptable trends and incidents, and report them in a timely, reliable and cost-effective fashion. The technologies involved in the development of such a system would include characterization of target chemicals, sensors and date transmission, mounting to the tank car, evaluation of the econ0omic viability of the concepts, and identification of potential legal implications.

Show moreA new methodology was reported [1,2] for integrated use of principal components analysis (PCA) and discriminant analysis in order to determine out-of-control status of a continuous process and to diagnose the source causes for abnormal behavior. Most of the disturbances were identified with good rates of success, with a higher success rate for step or ramp type of disturbances. Quantitative tools that evaluate overlap and similarity between high-dimensional PCA models are proposed in this communication, and their implications on determining the discrimination power of PCA models of processes operating under disturbances are discussed. Diagnosis of several disturbances occurring simultaneously is also investigated. The criterion developed provide upper limits of discrimination power of various single and multiple process disturbances. The techniques developed are illustrated by assessing the process described by the Tennessee Eastman Control Challenge problem [3].

Show moreSince the discovery of X-rays, by W.E. Roentgen in 1895, absorption-contrast imaging has been widely used in medical diagnostic, for example: mammography, chest X-ray, angiography etc. Over the last 25 years many researchers have shown that phase-contrast X-ray imaging is capable of obtaining a better contrast then classical absorption-contrast imaging. This is especially true in soft tissue imaging like mammography or at higher Xrays energies. During the past five years a significant effort has made in development of a tabletop analyzer-based phase-contrast system. In this system a perfect crystal is used to generate a quasi-monochromatic beam, which after interacting with an object is analyzed by a second perfect crystal called analyzer. The need of quasi-monochromatic beam and the low brilliance of conventional X-ray sources (CXS) has been the major limiting factor for tabletop systems. The work presents in this thesis aims to develop novel reconstruction methods for tabletop analyzer-based phase-contrast imaging (ABI) systems. The presented reconstruction methods goal is to minimize the impact of CXS low brilliance by utilizing phase-contrast image formation model and maximum or maximum-a-posteriori Poisson likelihood approach. Finally, a fast-convergent conjugate gradient optimization algorithm has been derived specifically for Poisson likelihood function maximization.

Show moreIn the 21st century, medical technology is advancing at a rapid rate, thus allowing people to benefit from new treatments being developed. However, much of the underserved and underinsured public are not benefiting from the breakthroughs as one might expect. In order for the existing facilities to better serve the public, gradual transformations and upgrades must be made. This is the challenge being tackled by our IPRO: How can we realistically suggest a renovation model for existing Access Community Health Network facilities which would promote cost efficiency and technological advancement in both environmental and operational capacities? - The primary objective of this session of IPRO 340 is to deliver a five-year model for which existing Access Community Healthcare facilities can be shaped into more environmentally and operationally efficient centers for medical treatment. - In designing such a model, secondary goals include familiarization with cutting edge medical technology, modernized building flow, spatial relations, as well as the development of business process models. In addition, we plan to investigate ways in which Access Community Healthcare can enhance the level of patient experience by making peoples’ visit to their facilities more enjoyable and informative.

Show moreSpallation neutrons produced from cosmic ray muons are a major source of backgrounds in underground physics experiments. Experiments have been done to study spallation neutron production and yield, but our understanding of these processes is still limited. There are various interactions that can produce spallation neutrons. Most of these production mechanisms are fairly well understood; much of the uncertainty in our understanding of spallation neutrons lies in mechanisms such as virtual photon exchange and the assumptions used to calculate the photonuclear cross section. Even the experiments that have been carried out do not agree with each other or theoretical calculations. Spallation neutron production mechanisms are discussed, as well as a new experiment to study spallation neutrons. The impact of this study on current and future underground physics experiments is also explored.
