Show moreMadison, WI is dominated by two main forces; the state government and the University of Wisconsin. These two institutions are linked by State Street, a pedestrian and bike corridor that serves as the main public gathering space for the city. The new Central Public Library along this strip will provide a free, democratic space for all Madison citizens. Beyond collecting books and storing media, the Madison Library offers opportunities for gatherings and informational exchanges 24 hours a day.

Show moreSudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for an estimated 325,000 deaths each year according to the Heart Rhythm Foundation. Cardiac arrest is different from a typical heart attack because it involves a complete stopping of the heart. Brain injury is likely to occur if the cardiac arrest is untreated for more than 5 minutes and a person cannot be revived after 10 minutes of no action. This is because the arrest sets off a chain of metabolic reactions, which leads to swelling of the brain tissue. Cardiac arrest results in ischemia reperfusion injury, which is when circulation is restored and high levels of oxygen rich blood rushes back into the brain causing brain damage. Decreasing the metabolism of the victim may result in a decrease of ischemia reperfusion injury. Reducing the oxygen level that enters the body when the victim revives and slowly increasing this level may also reduce reperfusion injury. However, current procedures dictate that 100% oxygen be given to cardiac arrest victim.

Show moreThe disclosure describes a technique for uniform heating of relatively large blocks of hydrocarbonaceous formations in situ using radio frequency (RF) electrical energy that is substantially confined to the volume to be heated and effects of dielectric heating of the formations. An important aspect of the disclosure relates to the fact that certain hydrocarbonaceous earth formations, for example raw unheated oil shale, exhibit dielectric absorption characteristics in the radio frequency range. In accordance with the system of the invention, a plurality of conductors are inserted in the formations and bound a particular volume of the formations. The phrase "bounding a particular volume" is intended to mean that the volume is enclosed on at least two sides thereof. Electrical excitation is provided for establishing alternating electric fields in the volume. The frequency of the excitation is selected as a function of the dimensions of the volume so as to establish a substantially non-radiating electric field which is substantially confined in the volume. In this manner, volumetric dielectric heating of the formations will occur to effect approximately uniform controlled heating of the volume

Show moreThe goal of the IPRO is to try to find an inexpensive, but accurate way of measuring the power output of a rider on a bicycle. Problems with systems currently available are: some products are not compatible with all bike systems causing the need to purchase new parts, the cost of the available products is expensive, and some of the available IPRO 324 Project Plan Page: 4 measuring systems are not very accurate. In order to achieve our goals and to improve the current technology, our IPRO is divided into two groups: the mechanical and the electrical team.

Show moreEfficiency in parking facilities has been set to low standards since self-parking was introduced in the 1950s1. As technology has developed, parking has been left in the past. Drivers are increasingly realizing the problem as they become accustomed to other technology, which increases the efficiency of their lives (eg smartphones). While driving around searching for an open lot, circling a garage for an parking spot, or wandering through garage a looking for a parked car, people have time to ponder the many improvements that should be made to the parking experience. Simply Park: IPRO 365 is taking initiative to seize the possibilities new technologies offer the parking industry. The result should be improved driver experience as well as increased efficiency and profitability of parking facilities. The system will include signs visible to passersby that display the number of vacancies within a parking facility. Once in the parking facility, additional signs will direct drivers to sections of the facility with vacancies. Colored lights above each parking spot will indicate the state of occupancy for quick reference when looking down an aisle. When a driver parks, the ticket they receive at the entrance gate will associate their ticket to the spot they parked in, so when the driver returns to the facility he/she can present his/her ticket to a kiosk which will notify him/her how to get back to his/her car. As the vehicle leaves the ticket association will be reset and displays will update to show one more spot available. Additional interfaces through mobile and internet applications will further expedite the parking process. 1National

Show moreThe scope of I-Pro 335 is both a conclusion to unfinished work from the previous two semesters along with new projects that will start and end this semester. Work to be concluded and closed-out from last semester: Final LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) documentation and identification of individuals that might be part of a LEED team should the school desire to pursue that route. Final design of Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.) elements including a re-design of the elevator, and approval by the client. Using the Code of Ethics written last semester as a base line, the code will be rewritten to strengthen its objective to provide guidance for the I-Pro. New projects to begin and completed this semester are: The roof re-design- Green roof options. This may also include storm water retention and grey water recycling systems, as well as any updates to the buildings primary plumbing systems. Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) - Lab hoods, air conditioning load calculations and Hydronic Heating. Electrical systems design- Illumination calculations and design, Alarm systems, and ‘Off-heating’ load calculations from equipment to be housed in Alumni Memorial Hall (A.M.H.). Construction schedule. Cost estimate.

Show moreIPRO 319’s objective is to determine the feasibility of converting one or more existing dams on the Fox River into low impact hydroelectric facilities, based upon the project’s economic viability, stakeholders, permitting, and certification processes. As part of this objective, the group aims to provide an extensive catalogue of information on low-impact hydroelectricity so as to establish a strong foundation for future IPROs/EnPROs concerned with the project. We hope to take advantage of IIT’s unique role as an education and research institution to accomplish the task.

Show moreThe United States is making big plans for improvements in bicycle infrastructure. To best understand if the improvements will be successful in creating a safe network, a study was done to determine contributing factors in bicycle crashes. Bicycle and motor vehicle crash data from around Chicago between 2005 and 2011 was analyzed for significant factors in infrastructure, cyclist and motorist attributes. Temperature was used as a predictor of bicycle traffic due to the seasonality of bicycling in Chicago. It was found that more bicycles and vehicles result in higher crash rates. It was also found that on -street parallel parking, signalized, skewed and multiple legged intersections lead to higher crash rates.

Show moreThe purpose of our team is to save lives and prevent accidents involving construction equipment damaging underground utilities. We seek to do this by introducing the Enhanced Vision System, or EVS. The goal then for this semester is to design and build this system for displaying the location of buried utilities to the operators of construction vehicles. This includes producing a proof-of-concept prototype as well as designing the final product that we would produce. As this project is not merely an IPRO, but also an EnPRO, we are also considering how to turn this idea into a successful business venture. To this end, we will be preforming research and creating a business plan.
