Show moreThe United States is making big plans for improvements in bicycle infrastructure. To best understand if the improvements will be successful in creating a safe network, a study was done to determine contributing factors in bicycle crashes. Bicycle and motor vehicle crash data from around Chicago between 2005 and 2011 was analyzed for significant factors in infrastructure, cyclist and motorist attributes. Temperature was used as a predictor of bicycle traffic due to the seasonality of bicycling in Chicago. It was found that more bicycles and vehicles result in higher crash rates. It was also found that on -street parallel parking, signalized, skewed and multiple legged intersections lead to higher crash rates. M.S. in Civil Engineering, July 2013 Show less
