Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester is to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research and for the space itself to be able to be as sustainable as possible throughout research this semester. Since the end goal is a rather ambitious one, a more realistic goal is to have an energy plan for following IPRO’s to work off of and to have the space cleared so that the developed plan can be tested. The team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable energy systems. For this fall semester, the team has set forth the following objectives:  Research office utilities that consume low amounts of energy, and investigate how to improve the efficiency of current utilities.  Research and test various energy efficient lighting solutions.  Research environmentally friendly floor, wall, and ceiling finishes along with necessary office furniture.  Develop a website to display the development progress of the Zero-Energy Lab and provide information regarding “green technology”  Clean and prepare the 6,000 ft2 space for future inhabitants.  Using the research, develop a program proposal for the Zero-Energy Lab.

Show moreThe purpose of this IPRO is to develop a robust, working prototype that can automatically monitor and detect a problem with a milling machine at A. FInkl & Sons Co. This IPRO is in its fourth semester and there are two challenges remaining: (1) alerting management to the detection of broken teeth during machining; and (2) developing spatial representations of items undergoing heat treatment. However, A. Finkl & Sons has asked us to concentrate solely on the goal of finding a way to detect when a break occurs in one of the milling teeth and then alert the mechanic monitoring the machine in order to replace it. This system will involve measuring vibrations using an accelerometer or by the use of laser detection. The goal of this IPRO is to research, test, and inform A. FInkl & Sons of the best solution to invest in, therefore they can decide what is better for their company.

These need to be personified in terms of various classes of users that will co-exist and the potential use by each. In a little over a decade, the internet has become a part of everyday life. What started with simple applications such as email, has expanded to providing Blogs, Social Networking Sites, streaming video content, low cost (sometimes fee) international calls and has evolved into massive e-commerce engine. {There will remain users who use the internet for simple tasks as email, while others will use it to get all their multi-media content and blogs with multitude of opportunities to monetize the same. } The overall increase in consumption (MB) as well as the need for ever-increasing speeds (Mbps) may require ISPs to embrace technologies beyond what is currently envisioned as the industry evolves from broadband technologies to wideband technologies. This change in the environment needs to be evaluated from the view of an ISP/ content provider like a cable company and the new technologies and capabilities it needs to embrace to ensure relevance in the ever-changing world.

Show moreThe IPRO 326 Project aims at systematically testing both parallel and series vehicle configurations of the Hummer and HMMWV (High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) to find the optimum hybridization factor specific to each configuration. An additional objective of the team is to work in coordination with Ph.D. students to simulate a hybrid electric bus system that is scheduled to have practical implementations by the end of the year. The team will also review research papers published from other universities to prepare for the upcoming FutureTruck 2005 competition, which involves designing more energy-efficient trucks with hybrid-electric drive trains. All vehicle simulations and structured testing will be performed using ADVISOR, as well as other software packages available in the Power Electronics and Motor Drives Laboratory at IIT. Related work done by previous student teams shall be reviewed and integrated into this project.

Show moreHigh speed deformation events such as caused by projectile penetration, fragment impact and shock/blast loading are of great importance in designing materials and structures for army applications. In these events, materials are subjected to large strains, high strain rates and rapid increase in temperature due to thermoplastic heating. In such severe conditions, overall performance is determined by the evolution of flow stress, failure initiation and propagation, and commonly in the form of adiabatic shear banding. Some of 2XXX series aluminum-copper (Al-Cu) alloys are recognized for their decent ballistic properties, and therefore they have been used as an armor material for lightweight U.S. Army vehicles. Most recently, an Al-Cu-Mg-Mn-Ag alloy labeled as Al 2139-T8 has been developed and is evaluated by the U.S. Army Research Labs. because of its better ballistic properties and higher strength than its predecessors. The underlying microstructure is believed to be the key element for this superior performance. The goal of this study is to explore the effect of composition and microstructural features on overall dynamic material behavior by examining mechanical and deformation behavior of different Al-Cu material systems. Starting from the pure single crystal and polycrystalline Al structures, and adding a different element to chemical composition in each step (i.e., Cu, Mg, Mn, Ag), mechanical response of these different systems has been investigated. For all alloy systems with the exception of single crystal Al, mechanical tests have been performed at room and elevated temperatures covering quasi-static ( to ) and dynamic ( to strain rate regimes. xiv Shear-compression specimens promoting localized shear deformation have been used to explore tendency of each one of these materials to failure by adiabatic shear banding. In addition to phenomenological Johnson-Cook Model (JCM), physics based Zerrilli-Armstrong and Mechanical Threshold Models have been studied to model the constitutive response of Al-Cu alloys over a wide range of strain rates and temperatures.. An improved ZA model has been developed to better capture the trends in experimental data.

Show moreIPRO 327’s objective is to create a complete set of drawings and specifications of a water distribution system for Pignon, Haiti that can be easily built and used by the town. This is a continuation of a spring 2007 IPRO, which completed mapping of the town. We now seek to design the physical water distribution system that can be sustained for twenty years. To do this, we have identified several factors significant to the success of this system that we will be focusing on. These include finding a water source that can provide a continuous and adequate flow of water, design of a pump and the power source to run it, design of water kiosks and faucets, and design of the piping network with erosion protection. User fees will also be determined for both public and private water lines. The water system will also be designed so that its output may grow with the population of the town over the next twenty years. Through our work, we hope to create a system that can be implemented by Pignon to provide a clean and reliable water source for its citizens.

The objectives of this group, as set forth by the sponsor, Seth Lewis of the Manhattan Group, are: 1. To determine the amount of force needed to cut 6, 8, and 10 sheets of 20 lb. paper taking into account the length and width of the shred 2. To design an efficient gear train that optimizes the number of gears and minimizes the motor size 3. To develop acoustical sound dampeners to reduce the amount of noise created during the shredding process by 10 decibels. The team will seek to accomplish these goals through the use of computer simulation, extended research, and laboratory testing and error. By the end of the semester the team anticipates having developed a mathematical model that will allow for the minimization of the amount of force used to shred various amounts of paper, to have built a gear train that works better and lasts longer, and to have noticeably reduced the amount of noise created by the shredder. FMS is primarily a collections company that is growing rapidly. Each year FMS receives accounts from private and government agencies and must collect from those accounts in order to receive a commission, their payment. The IPRO team had met with the sponsor many times over the course of the semester to gather requirements, map and layout FMS’ process model and in general have a better understanding of what FMS does. The team needed a better understanding of the problem and what the problem meant for FMS. In this paper, forced oscillations introduced in the input flow rates of an exothermic continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) are shown to result in a modification of the S-shaped steady state curve. This modification leads to a possibility of operating a CSTR at an asymptotically stable period regime located in the vicinity of an unstable steady state of the reactor system with stationary input flow rates. Thus, vibrations of the input flow rates can be viewed as a stabilizing mechanism for exothermic CSTR's.

Show moreFor real-time embedded systems, such as control systems used in medical, automotive and avionics industry, tasks deployed on such systems often have stringent real-time, reliability and energy consumption constraints. How to schedule real-time tasks under various QoS constraints is a challenging issue that has drawn attention from the research community for decades. In this thesis, we study task execution strategies that not only minimize system energy consumption but also guarantee task deadlines and reliability satisfaction. We first consider the scenario when all tasks are of the same criticality. For this case, two task execution strategies, i.e. checkpointing based and task re-execution based strategies are developed. Second, considering the scenario when tasks are of different criticalities, a heuristic search based energy minimization strategy is also proposed. When tasks are of different criticalities, a commonly used approach to guaranteeing high-criticality task deadlines is to remove low-criticality tasks whenever the system is overloaded. With such an approach, the QoS provided to low-criticality tasks is rather poor, it can cause low-criticality tasks to have high deadline miss rate and less accumulated execution time. To overcome this shortcoming, we develop a time reservation based scheduling algorithm and a two-step optimization algorithm to meet high-criticality task deadlines, while minimizing low-criticality task deadline miss rate and maximizing their accumulated execution time, respectively. As many-core techniques mature, many real-time embedded systems are built upon many-core platforms. However, many-core platforms have high wear-out failure rate. Hence, the last issue to be addressed in the thesis is how to replace defective cores on many-core platforms so that deployed applications’ real-time properties can be maintained. We develop an offline and an online application-aware system reconfiguration strategy to minimize the impact of the physical layer changes on deployed real-time applications. All the developed approaches are evaluated through extensive simulations. Are the regulations fleet-wide or regionally specific? Can credits be traded? Etc. · What types of systems are being deployed to remove what pollutants? Describe different sub-types and configurations within a type of system, and how common they are. · How much instrumentation is available on these systems, and what signals are measured (temperature, pressure, chemistry analysis, etc.)? How much diversity is there in the levels of available instrumentation?
