Show moreOur purpose is to seek a union between living comfortably and living sustainably at an affordable price. Our design, for the community of Evanston, will first minimizes its energy consumption and then uses the most sustainable methods to fulfill the remaining needs of the inhabitants. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living. This community will also serve as an example to Chicago-area municipalities about the benefits of affordable sustainable planning, design, and living. It will also be an attractive marketable solution to the current home buyers within our given demographic.

Show moreNeuronal populations in the brain achieve levels of synchronous electrophysiological activity during both normal brain function and pathological states such as epileptic seizures. Understanding how the dynamics of neuronal oscillators in the brain evolve from normal to diseased states is a critical component towards decoding such complex behaviors. In my studies, I assessed multi-site dynamics underlying seizure evolution in limbic epilepsy by analyzing oscillators in recordings of local field potentials from three brain structures (bilateral hippocampi and anteromedial thalamus) in a rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy extracted using the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) technique. The analysis revealed patterns of multi-site phase coherence during initiation and termination phases of seizures. The multi-site synchrony events as seizures naturally terminated were used to model electrical deep brain stimulation (DBS) protocols aimed at stopping ongoing epileptic seizures. The location and frequency of the natural termination synchrony varied between subjects but was stable in time within each animal. My studies reveal that DBS protocols were significantly more effective at rapidly stopping seizures when the frequency and location of multi-site stimulation reflected the endogenous synchrony dynamics observed in each subject. These results strongly suggest that tailoring DBS protocols to individual endogenous rhythms that may represent how brains naturally resolve epileptic seizures could play a critical role in vastly improving the overall efficacy of this important therapy.

Show moreSystem-On-Chip (SOC) is one of the most popular Computer Aided Design (CAD) methodologies in electronic system design. In this research, SOC design is investigated in two different types of applications: i) low cost and power efficient applications; and ii) high performance computing applications. To explore low cost and power efficient design, a microcontroller based wireless medical system is investigated. Two wireless communication protocols for medical applications and patient monitoring are analyzed. In addition, the ZigBee stack developed by TI and a medical amplifier are discussed. For high performance SOC applications, implementations of several matrix operations are examined. An improved fixed-point hardware design of QR decomposition is introduced and optimized for Xilinx FPGAs. A Givens Rotation algorithm is implemented using a folded systolic array and the CORDIC algorithm. This approach is highly suitable for high-speed FPGAs or ASIC designs. It is found that the Xilinx XC5VLX110T FPGA is capable of running the QR decomposition at 246MHz.

Show moreIn this project, the utilization of virtualized reality environments to the guidance of blind or visually-impaired people will be explored. A virtualized reality environment will be constructed based on visual sensory information and described verbally to the user instead of presented to him graphically. One of two contexts will be selected: a static scenario in which the motorized sensors and the system are located in the environment; or a mobile scenario in which a wearable computing system is worn by the user. The technical side of the project requires students with programming skills capable and/or interested in: image analysis, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, and hardware interface and design. The non-technical side of the project requires students capable and/or interested in: analyzing the guidance needs of blind and visually-impaired people, analyzing and experimenting with different verbal descriptions of visual scenes, assessing the level of detail with which the user is comfortable, and experimenting with and assessing the effectiveness of different descriptive schemes. In the long term, the insight and ideas developed in this project may lead to their further development, testing and implementation in practical applications for those who are blind and visually-impaired or more generally for people to communicate and collaborate with each other more effectively in a virtual fashion.

Show moreThe bidding price for the renewable energy is very different from some traditional energy, like gas, coal and so on, because when we produced the renewable energy, the only cost is the generator unit cost, for example, wind power, water power and so on. People never need to pay the fuel price for the solar, water or wind. So here come one question how can we decide the energy price for these power. As we all know, the bidding price decided the profit for the generating company. Nowadays, more and more researches have been done in this field for every company want a good price to earn the highest profit. But for the renewable energy, they are different from the traditional energy which price is determined by the fuel price. So how to decide the bidding price of the renewable energy will be a good topic and question for us. To solve this problem, I will try to use an idea called minimum the imbalance in order to maximum the profit for those owners. This idea first has been applied in the wind unit. For my thesis, I will apply this idea to the hydro unit both with the storage and without storage. For each part, I will use some data to test. By these testing, the result will show this bidding strategy will be better.

Show moreHeusler compounds are of great interest for their properties such as shape memory, thermoelectric, ferromagnetic and spin polarization effects that could lead to new mechanical and electronic devices. Currently, the study of Heusler alloys is focused on their electronic and magnetic properties, but the high temperature thermodynamic properties of these compounds have not been covered as much. A thorough knowledge of the thermodynamic properties and phase equilibria is required for developing this kind of alloys. This thesis is part of a systematic investigation of the thermodynamics and phase equilibria of ternary Heusler alloy systems. In this work, the high temperature reaction calorimeter was used to obtain the standard enthalpy of formation of compounds in the Ni2XSn (X = Ti, Zr, Hf, V and Nb) and Ni2TiX (X = Ga and In) ternary systems. It was confirmed the compound Ni2TaSn does not exist in the Heusler structure A Setaram Ligne 96 drop calorimeter was used to measure the heat content of Ni2TiSn as a function of temperature. Phase equilibria and crystal structures of Ni2TiSn, Ni2TiGa and Ni2TiIn were determined using XRD, SEM and EDS.

Show moreThe IPRO 347 team is being sponsored by Abrasive Form to lead the company into a paperless form of tracking projects. Abrasive Form currently uses a paper folder, which they call the “job folder” to hold all the important documents for completing incoming projects. This job folder travels along with the pieces of the project until the project is completed. Once a project has been completed, and the final product is shipped out, the job folder for that project is then kept in an on-site filling cabinet. So far this has led to several problems for Abrasive Form. As the company is increasing in size and completing increasing amounts of projects, they have had to dedicate a large portion of their offices to the storing of old job files. Abrasive Form keeps all of their completed job folders to ensure that all liability for the company is covered, and whenever necessary throughout the lifespan of completed projects in the field, Abrasive Form is able to prove that their work was of the quality that was requested. This has also lead to a lot of time being wasted by the employees of Abrasive Form traveling to the back offices where the job folders are held to look up information. The IPRO 347 team will be helping Abrasive Form come up with a solution to this very serious problem. The solution generated thus far is to scan all the documents contained within the paper job folders into PDF form, and use a digital filing program (such as Bugzilla which is a free open source program) to organize the PDF files into sub folders, and allow for quick referencing based on critical criteria such as the job number, part number, customer name, or part number. All this information would then be contained in a single server that can be accessed on any computer throughout the company through an internal network.

Show moreIn the 21st century, medical technology is advancing at a rapid rate, thus allowing people to benefit from new treatments being developed. However, much of the underserved and underinsured public are not benefiting from the breakthroughs as one might expect. In order for the existing facilities to better serve the public, gradual transformations and upgrades must be made. This is the challenge being tackled by our IPRO: How can we realistically suggest a renovation model for existing Access Community Health Network facilities which would promote cost efficiency and technological advancement in both environmental and operational capacities? - The primary objective of this session of IPRO 340 is to deliver a five-year model for which existing Access Community Healthcare facilities can be shaped into more environmentally and operationally efficient centers for medical treatment. - In designing such a model, secondary goals include familiarization with cutting edge medical technology, modernized building flow, spatial relations, as well as the development of business process models. In addition, we plan to investigate ways in which Access Community Healthcare can enhance the level of patient experience by making peoples’ visit to their facilities more enjoyable and informative.
