Show moreThis is the second phase of this project as a continuation of Spring 2008 IPRO 317 and will have a focus for Summer 2008 on the computer program, the user interface, as well as completion of the first geographic area of the scale model. The objective of this project is to design and construct a 3-D scale model for the first portion of downtown Chicago (downtown Chicago has been subdivided into 6 portions). The model will be used to simulate and test the effectiveness of fire defense strategies to address fire or other catastrophes related to public health and safety. This model will include streets, buildings and detailed information that help the Chicago Fire Department in planning interventions, considering various scenarios and case studies. The model is being built in phases, with the overall design incorporating a sophisticated, computer-driven illumination scheme built within the model base. The model thus will be able to display animated scenarios of virtually any depth and focus, by means of time-varying color and brightness. CAD Computer-generated images and laser-cutting methods are the main techniques used to design and build the model, but hand craftsmanship is also necessary. The completed model will be fully modular, designed to transport easily to various facilities. The usefulness of the model thus will extend to many needs of the Chicago Fire Department and City of Chicago, as an educational tool within the department and for community outreach. Possible additional uses for the model will be wind tunnel measurement of pressure distributions to inform building design and City infrastructure needs, as well as the study of urban microclimates and the impact on building energy demand. There is also the potential for this model and its design approach to inform the development of scale models to depict the venues associated with the proposed 2016 Olympics along the Chicago lakefront. This project will include: (1) Identification of the scale, materials, technologies, and strategies for construction; (2) Physical mapping and computer modeling of the downtown built environment; (3) Design of the physical model and computer/electronic components; and (4) Construction of a reduced-area mock-up for final review and approval by the City of Chicago.

Show moreOver the years there has been intensive research on visual prosthesis around the world and significant technological advancements have been made. The Intracortical Visual Prosthesis Team (IVP) at IIT has been researching and developing a procedure as well as a device which will be implanted within the human visual cortex. The device consists of sub-miniature electrodes which will artificially stimulate the visual cortex by introducing electrical currents in to the cortex. The IIT Team has reached a point in their 10 year development process where they would like to proceed with implanting the device in a volunteer in the next few years. Implantation of a device which provides artificial vision is an extraordinarily complex process. In the initial stages the medical and engineering aspects are the most prevalent ones, but as the project moves forward there are some questions that inevitably must be answered or at least considered. These questions deal much less with the technology and much more with the volunteers that will eventually have these complex devices implanted. To try and answer some of these questions, in IPRO 306 we will look into various medical, political, engineering, ethical, media and psychological issues that we believe may become of greater importance as the project progresses into the implementation stage. We will also look into the public relations aspect as well as some political and psychological issues. Based on our research and understanding we will provide several issues that we see as needing to be addressed in the future and recommend possible solutions to them.

Show moreConventional refrigeration uses a great deal of electricity, a resource scare in developing areas, and as a consequence it is not viable. However if a system that is inexpensive, reliable under local conditions, and operates with only minimal electric power from a solar cell or battery can be introduced it would be a tremendous asset. Faced with such a requirements this project addresses these issues in order to find a solution that is economically and socially feasible.

Show moreVery little unbiased information is available to the general public about energy needs, concerns, and sources. The philosophy behind IPRO 332 is that people should be sufficiently educated about their own energy choices to be able think critically about the corresponding consequences. This IPRO team will build on the work underway since Spring 2007 in developing effective methods for educating high school students about energy and sustainability, expanding our outreach to junior high school students. In addition, the team will: (1) Construct a Teaching Kit to extend the reach of the program beyond the Chicago metropolitan area to provide educators with the materials they will need to present the modules on their own and tailor it to their classrooms; (2) Complete the full-scale launch of the organization’s website, www.howmanyearths.com, to enrich the learning experience, provide a professional contact interface and build a community of engaged teachers and students; (3) Execute a formal marketing plan to build awareness of our efforts, establish our brand image, promote our work, and greatly increase visibility; and (4) Pursue grants and funding with the goal of establishing a viable, long-term, not-for-profit organization.

Show moreDystrophin gene is the largest in the human genome with 79 exons covering greater than 0.1% of the total genome, located on the Xp21 locus of the “X” chromosome resulting in a 427kDa protein, “Dystrophin”. Dystrophin is an important cytoskeletal protein which belongs to the β-Spectrin/α-actinin family of proteins. It comprises of an amino terminal domain, alpha helical coiled structure COOH domain, central rod region with 24 STRs and four proline rich hinge regions. It plays a vital role in localizing the Dystrophin glycoprotein complex (DGC) in the Sarcollema and is associated with the DGC in controlling the signaling events of certain proteins associated with DGC. The large size of the gene makes it more vulnerable to mutations resulting in partially functional or non-functional Dystrophin. The absence of Dystrophin results in disruption of sub sarcolemma-extracellular matrix linkage, loss of nitric oxide, progressive muscle weakening and muscle wasting leading to the death of patients typically before the end of their teenage. In certain cases alternatively spliced isoforms produce Dystrophin with reduced length yet stable and completely functionality. The main focus of this project was to select monospecific antibody against the more stable alternatively spliced variant D14 (15”16”) 17, which is functional and more stable compared to unspliced parent D14:17. The yeast surface display technique was used to effectively screen and select the yeast scFv clones containing the monospecific antibody against our target spliced variant D14 (15”16”) 17 protein and D2:3. The yeast scFv sub population was enriched by repeated MACS and FACS selection. Test colonies picked from the enriched scFv pool were confirmed via PCR and restriction digestion analysis. The scFv for the respective antigens were then sub cloned into pPnnl-9 secretion vector using YVH10 yeast cells via LiTRAFCO method. It was clear that by repeated MACS and FACS selection the scFv pool can be enriched and the yeast scFv clone sub population can be reduced to a significant level. The scFv sub cloned into Pnnl-9 secretion vector can be purified using affinity chromatography and the further affinity and avidity studies can be conducted.

Show moreThis study focuses on performance assessment and monitoring of model predictive control systems. A methodology is proposed to determine a benchmark and monitor model predictive control performance on-line. A performance measure based on the ratio of historical and achieved performance is used for monitoring and a ratio of design and achieved performance is used for diagnosis. Performance monitoring and diagnosis of causes for poor performance are integrated. A real-time knowledge-based system is developed to supervise monitoring and diagnosis activities. Case studies with linear and nonlinear models of an evaporator illustrate the methodology and limitations of linearity assumptions.

Show moreThe logistic regression model is an important generalized linear model for the categorical data. The maximum likelihood estimation is mostly used in estimating the parameters of the logistic regression model. However, the maximum likelihood estimation is very sensitive to outliers which will cause the inaccuracies of the fitted parameters and model selection in high-dimensional regression. Chi and Scott (2014) demonstrated by simulation that minimizing the integrated square error or L2 estimation (L2E) is a robust method to fit 2-class categorical models. They also showed that the L2E estimation method can select the right model even in the presence of many outliers in high dimensional scenarios. In my thesis, I extended the L2E estimation method from 2-class to 3-class based on the MM algorithm by Chi and Scott (2014). Then I demonstrated the properties above for 2-class categorical models are also applicable to 3-class ones.

Show moreThis is the first semester of EnPro 350. Although the title suggests wood reclamation via arts and crafts, we have decided to expand the focus to reclamation via urban wood and lumber. We would like to start a business that addresses a need in the market for convenient removal of dead or infested trees in an urban setting. This encompasses all trees not located in forests or tree groves, and includes those found in urban setting. Often, the expense to remove one’s trees from his property is a time-intensive, confusing, and expensive process. We have decided to provide the service of tree health assessment, removal, processing, lumber certification, and marketing through utilizing the concept of vertical integration. Mission Statement: "To Satisfy Our Customers by Providing High Quality Wood from Urban Forests while Creating a Positive Change in the Environment"

Show moreThe Spring 2005 IPRO 305 team will be continuing the efforts of ongoing research at IIT in the realm of Pervasive Computing. The team will be focusing on the challenge of integrating Pervasive Computing into a specific aspect of the IIT campus. The overall vision of the IPRO 305 team is to continue efforts to develop an application called HawkTour – a virtual Illinois Institute of Technology tour guide. HawkTour will provide a completely new approach to the campus tour at IIT. The application has been designed to run on Tablet PC’s or other devices with similar computing capabilities, and provides the user with general campus information while guiding the user around campus and maintaining complete awareness of the user’s current location and intent, thereby adapting the tour to the user’s own personal preferences. The objective for this semester’s team is to refine the application and come up with a new version with an optimized content database, a more sophisticated hardware interface, improve the mapping methodology, work on the user interface and scale of the application to simpler devices such as cell phones and personal digital assistants.

Show morecontain the employees necessary to run and maintain the multiple programs which will be controlled by the Student Recycling Business. This business will also be in charge of creating events which will help to get the students, staff and faculty of IIT more involved in the recycling process. For prolonged success, the marketing component of any business plan is possibly one of the most essential. Within a student-run business, the need for campus support is enough motivation to implement an effective marketing strategy to advertise the products and gain an appropriate reputation. In terms of recycling, to achieve desired results for a specific objective requires that the target audience is fully informed. Thus, an awareness campaign must be introduced before any expected business success is observed. As shown by the provided data, the large diversity on campus has and most likely will always remain a unique attribute of IIT. Not only do the ethnicity and gender size vary from one category to the next, but the large demographic range (age) that is not presented due to unattainable information is also a significant factor in target marketing. Having language barriers and large generational gaps makes it difficult to impose a single marketing strategy all over campus. A successful marketing plan will overcome these obstacles with ideas that integrate all backgrounds and avoid cultural seclusion.
