Show moreIPRO 347 is a continuation of an IPRO, which previously explored ways to utilize waste heat and CO2 from Robbins Community Power Plant. The concluding thought from that project was that the plant would need to select a source of greenwood to burn. The goal of IPRO 347 is to establish a plan for the Robbins Community Power Plant to gather and utilize the green waste of urban lumber. The main task is to research opportunities for RCP to gather a supply of greenwood. The items being researched are estimated expenses and profits, whom will be participating, the availability of our raw good—greenwood—and potential buyers.

Show moreE. coli O157:H7 and norovirus have each been responsible for outbreaks of foodborne illness involving fresh leafy green vegetables. Peroxyacetic acid (POAA) has the potential to be an effective sanitizer during commercial fresh-cut produce washing. The addition of high power ultrasound (HPU) to the washing system may enhance the POAA efficacy. The purpose of this study was to reduce E. coli O157:H7 and norovirus contamination during commercial fresh-cut lettuce washing using POAA and HPU. Fresh-cut romaine lettuce leaves were inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 or murine norovirus (MNV, a surrogate for the human norovirus) and washed by POAA and HPU. Cross-contamination was tested by washing clean leaves in contaminated processing water where pre-inoculated leaves were washed previously. A high level of cross-contamination (4.5-log CFU/g E. coli) occurred after uninoculated leaves were rinsed in contaminated wash water for 2 min. A subsequent 2 min wash in POAA alone or in combination with HPU reduced counts by approximately 1.2-log and 2.3-log, respectively. More than 2-log norovirus was removed from washing 2 min in either DI water or POAA. However infectious MNV washed from leaves was not detected in wash water containing POAA. Those results implied a high possibility of cross-contamination during freshproduce washing, and indicate that adding POAA and HPU in addition to washing water in wash water can reduce cross-contamination rate.

Show moreto create a vertical community bound together by two key issues/requirements in Korean society: urban agriculture and mental health care to create a ‘vertical façade farm’ capable of producing 156 tons of vegetables (predominantly lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries) and 200 tons of fish per year to create a mental health sanctuary (or sanatorium) that provides short term (days), midterm (months) and long term (years) residence and care for people with mental health issues that may require physical operations and/or psychological care. to actively engage the mental health residents in aspects of the agricultural production to draw on research showing that engagement with plants/nature assists in mental healing. to create a large multi-purpose space at the ground floor of the building which will largely serve as a farmer’s market for sale of the agricultural produce and engagement between the community residents and the public to create a series of gardens/green spaces at height within the complex, as well as vertical green walls, for healing (residents and urban issues) to use the double-skin ‘façade farm’ for assisting in passive natural ventilation of internal spaces

Show moreUnderground mining is a very high risk industry. There are many potential hazards in the underground mining these include fire, explosion, inundation, roof collapse, toxic gases, chemical pollution, etc. Over past centuries, in US alone, more than 100,000 miners lost their life in different accidents. The primary safety methods used in underground mines concentrate on the monitoring of the hazardous gases, fire detection and ventilation. Using advanced instruments and monitoring techniques have significantly reduced the accidents in the modern mines. However despite the advancement of these monitoring facilities, accidents still occur in underground mining annually around the world, and many miners were killed because they were trapped and unable to escape due to blocked of exit access. This thesis describes a new development of an emergency evacuation system in underground mines and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of the system. It is expected that the new system will greatly improve the emergency exit methods and save more lives in the future. The new emergency evacuation system consists of vertical concrete mineshaft, high capacity mineshaft elevators, surface terminal and underground support structures. In addition, the study of numerical simulation was carried out to observe the ground response during excavation. A typical ground profiles for underground mining in south part of China was used in this analysis. The results selected from shaft excavation simulation indicate that fluid drilling method effectively prevents the soil around mineshaft from collapse hazard. Compared to soil strength, soil stiffness has a significant influence on the soil response induced by excavating shafts.

Show moreA bolt having a shank and integral head has a strip of photoelastic material mounted in the head for manifesting in the form of photoelastic fringes linearly related to bolt tension the bending stresses created in the head during loading of the bolt. To determine the tension in the bolt during or after loading, polarized light is directed toward the photoelastic strip and reflected light from the strip is analyzed to measure fringe order. The fringe order is related to the amount of bending stresses in the head of the bolt by a predetermined calibration curve, the bending stresses being linearly related to bolt tension.

Show moreDuring the summer 2009 semester, IPRO 358 plans to develop mock-ups of the Delta Hook Technology (DHT) and to lay the foundation for a business model for Sparrowhawk, LLC, an early stage company. Sparrowhawk has investigated the concept for an innovative fishing hook that is not currently on the market or ready to be launched. The IPRO team will work together to approach the process of designing mock-ups of the Delta Hook Technology (DHT), testing the mock-ups, and determining measures that can be taken to improve the DHT. Subsequent mock-ups will continue to improve based on results of the product testing. Simultaneously, we will do market research in order to identify the target market, determine price points, and develop marketing strategies for DHT.

Show moreOver the next few years, the global scientific community will be deciding on the site for the International Linear Collider (ILC). The ILC will be the next great step in particle physics, and there will only be one in the world. The United States would like to host the ILC and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois is a very likely candidate to support this technology. Many important politicians and scientists will be visiting Fermilab during this period of political negotiation and site evaluation. The team’s goal is to design an exhibit for the atrium in Wilson Hall at Fermilab that conveys the scale and importance of scientific research, the value of science education, and the intersections of art and science for both a scientific and non-scientific audience. The exhibit will not only be open to the Fermilab staff and general public, but also to visiting dignitaries and politicians.

Show moredistribution operation which will aid companies seeking to outsource logistics operations. However, the team’s main objective is to add a Request for Proposal tool to the existing model allowing companies to determine the effectiveness of outsourcing different aspects of warehouse operations. This team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically warehouse logistics pricing. For the spring semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Analyze existing model (Shipping, Manufacturing, Transportation, etc.) in terms of being user-friendly and effectiveness at accurately predicting cost versus revenue and whether the operations input should be outsourced. Refine the current model given the suggestions of a surveyed group, not differentiating the contributions of the IPRO students from the software users. Research costs associated with logistic processes. Develop a multi-purpose activity outsourcing tool for common use called “Request for Proposal”.
