Show moreThe ultimate goal of the Zero Energy Lab is to get the fourth level of machinery hall off the electrical grid. The IPRO is moving towards transforming the space into a research space for future energy and lighting technologies. Since the end goals of the Zero Energy Lab are ambitious for one semester we are proposing to address solar hot water, a golf cart used as a mobile battery bank, and window efficiency this semester. We are also hoping to learn some tuck-pointing techniques to make the space more presentable. We would like for the team to learn new things about the technologies we are researching and using. We hope to have a good hands-on experience with energy efficiency and green technologies. The team is a collaboration of students from various majors including architecture, political science, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and biophysics. Together we believe we will be able to create a cohesive end product and work well together along the way.

Show moreThe IPRO team will develop a prototype for a computer graphic reconstruction of the built environment of Chicago. Beginning with the ghost city -- those buildings and environments which have been destroyed -- students will prepare a development plan for the necessary technologies to create, develop, distribute, market and protect this project as they make it available to a wide audience through appropriate computer technologies and media. It is now possible to recreate, in computer graphic form, the city of Chicago at any time in its past. Making the growth of the city visible would permit anyone to discover for oneself what it was like to be alive at anytime in the city's history - from Indian encampment to high-rise apartment. This would be visual -providing the ability to see the difference in light levels during different kinds of air quality or as the result of different kinds of artificial illumination (candle, lamp, gas or electric light); and it would also be aural, providing indications of sound, whether from the livestock near the stockyards, ships moving in the river, hearing hymns sung in a church, or the sound of workers walking at a shift change. It will be possible to move anywhere in the city and enter any building or environment. It will be possible to see the water and sewer systems being extended across the prairie, and then see the opening of streets, followed by the construction of buildings - houses, apartments, shops, schools, churches - along the newly opened streets. It will be possible to shop at the department stores of the Loop, or visit one's doctor, dentist or attorney in the Loop or one's own neighborhood; and at the same time see how thosevery structures developed and changed over time. This is an opportunity to apply well-understood ideas about the virtual city to the past. There are several requirements for the success of a large scale project: determination of how best to present the material (Web, CD, DVD, I-Max), selection of a common computer graphic language (VRML, Auto-Cad, Form-Z, Microstation), design of a robust and adaptive information technology architecture to accommodate the appropriate array of emerging and evolving computer technologies (hardware, software, distribution modes), development of thoughtful strategic business and marketing plans, and management of intellectual property. This is a continuation of a Spring 2000 IPRO project that has made significant progress in laying the foundation for continued work by new IPRO teams.

Show moreIPRO 364: Ramovation has the great opportunity to assist our community partner, Save the Ramova organization, in the development of preliminary design and business opportunity assessments for the renovation of the Ramova Theater. IPRO 364 is a continuing IPRO from the spring 2011 semester. From the spring semester, the IPRO 364 team created a preliminary program for the Ramova Theater renovation. The preliminary program was informed by analysis gathered from three research methods: case studies on other theater renovations, survey responses from the Bridgeport neighborhood and surrounding colleges, and contextual studies on neighborhoods similar to Bridgeport. A preliminary budget for the renovation was also determined. To tackle the summer 2011 IPRO workload, the summer team will divide into several sub groups which include the Design/Clean Energy Group, Budget/Finance Group, Case Study/Survey Group, and the Interview Group. In the summer semester, the IPRO team will expand on the preliminary program and preliminary budget created by the spring team. The IPRO group hopes the output from the Spring 2011, Summer 2011, and subsequent semesters will assist the Save the Ramova organization in presenting Ramova Theater renovation ideas to key stakeholders and also help spur development on the Halsted St. corridor of Bridgeport.

Show moreHybrid electric vehicles (HEV) combine the internal combustion engine (ICE) of a conventional vehicle with the battery and electric motor of an electric vehicle. Hybrid electric propulsion, currently available in a limited selection of automobiles, improves fuel economy while enhancing torque when acceleration is required. In a parallel hybrid, onboard computers control the utilization of the ICE and electric motor, by selecting one or both power sources to drive the vehicle. A battery delivers power to the electric motor and is recharged by a generator driven by the ICE and by regenerative braking. This IPRO will seek to obtain similar benefits for a bicycle equipped with an electric motor and rechargeable battery, by substituting the cyclist in place of the hybrid electric's ICE. Regenerative braking and downhill pedaling will be investigated to recharge the battery. The intent of this IPRO is to create an understanding and interest in HEVs.This is the second offering of this IPRO. This term we continue our study and construction of a lightweight bicycle, exploring front and/or rear motors, using a lithium-ion battery that is currently being built to our specifications. Working with Dr. Emadi, the IPRO group may design and build appropriate power electronics to support motor drive as well as regenerative braking. A future project might explore the combination of ultra capacitors, for energy storage, and a fuelcell, to produce energy for propulsion.

Show moreThere is evidence that people have been harvesting rainwater since 4000BC. The Roman Empire developed an intricate infrastructure to direct water to be used for irrigation and sanitary purposes. For the most part, modern society has abandoned the practice of harvesting rainwater because water sources have been plentiful and inexpensive. Residents have become accustom to turning on the tap and receiving potable water from their Municipal Authority or a free standing well. Essentially rainwater is undervalued and as such has not been given the priority it deserves. This circumstance is rapidly changing as fresh water is becoming more difficult to acquire. Municipalities are raising the price of water, adding regulations to restrict its use and promoting the rapid growth of investment in „green‟ lifestyle solutions. These actions are increasing public awareness of the need to reduce our “water footprint” and a willingness to invest in conservation systems. In urban settings, two-thirds of the water provided by municipalities goes to residential properties. In a typical single family home, 70 percent of the water used annually is used in toilets and outside the home for lawn irrigation, gardens, washing cars, swimming pools etc. These applications could successfully utilize non-potable water, if a reliable source existed for capturing and recycling it in a convenient and affordable way. This IPRO will develop and test a system targeted at homeowners for rainwater harvest.

Show moreWe would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced processing of signals from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released this spring. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage

Show moreIn this project, students will help the staff of the Lugenia Burns Hope Center develop the leadership capacities of the people of Bronzeville.Working behind the scenes in this non-profit organization as web masters, document designers, information managers, business consultants, and project coordinators, students will not only have the opportunity to learn more about this historic, African-American community but also play a role in itsrevitalization. The Hope Center was established in 1994 and is located on the main campus of IIT, at 34th and State. For the past five years, the center has offered classes and workshops for emerging leaders in Bronzeville. At this time, the Center wishes to recruit more students, to track its graduates and learn more about the graduates current work in the community. Students will help the staff reach these goals in three ways: by developing a database ofalumni, creating profiles of the graduates as community leaders, and designing promotional material about the Hope Center in the form of a brochure, a newsletter, and an interactive, multi-media web site. This work would be framed by a business plan that outlines previous achievements of the Hope Center and forecasts goals for the next 3E years. Because the Center lacks the resources that would enable them to complete these tasks on its own, it welcomes all IIT students with interests in leadership, community development, and African-American history.

Show moreDuring the milling operations at an industrial steel producer like A. Finkl & Sons (Chicago, IL), a substantial amount of time and money is lost due to the fact that cutting inserts break catastrophically and without warning. The goal of this project is to devise an effective means by which a cutting insert breakage event can be quickly and reliably detected, thereby minimizing damage to the steel and other cutting inserts, and also freeing technicians to attend multiple machines at a time. This increases the productivity of their operations, and it has the potential to save A. Finkl & Sons substantial costs per year in time lost in rework and prematurely broken cutting inserts.
