Show moreSafety critical estimation applications require quantification of integrity risk, which is the probability of the state estimate error exceeding predefined bounds of acceptability. Integrity risk can only be evaluated when the state estimate error probability density function is precisely known, necessitating stochastic models that exactly describe measurement noise and disturbance inputs. Uncertainty in these models directly results in inaccurate assessments of integrity risk. This dissertation develops the first implementable methods to upper bound integrity risk when the autocorrelation functions of stochastic inputs reside between upper and lower bounding functions. The first part of this work considers real-valued estimation applications that use the Kalman filter or batch weighted least squares estimator. Explicit relations are developed between the estimate error variance and autocorrelation functions using a new generalized covariance matrix derived in this dissertation. From these expressions, two methods are provided to upper bound integrity risk. The first method enables fast computation of a conservative bound, and the second method produces the minimum upper bound via semi-definite optimization. Mixed real/integer estimation applications utilizing integer bootstrapping are the focus of the second part of this work. The integrity risk bound is formally defined as the global solution to a non-convex optimization problem over a polytope. Determination of the polytopic region is difficult, and two bounding approaches are initially developed for a circumscribing hyper-rectangular feasible region. Using an innovative method to define the polytope together with linear programming, a third method is derived to upper bound integrity risk over the true polytopic feasible region.

The process of developing trading systems is itself systematic and a source of competitive advantage. In this thesis, I present three chapters that address strategic competitiveness in automated trading—ethics, methodology and quality control. These chapters examine responsibility, and develop processes for both initial and sustained belief in the competitiveness of trading systems and the trading firm.

Show moreAs the web has become more interactive in recent years, with website users having the ability to generate their own content, there has been increased tension between the content generated by users and the content generated by “professionals,” especially professional journalists and publishers. Many journalism professionals see the value of allowing users to comment on their work; for example, an interactive site that allows user commenting may increase users’ loyalty to the site, meaning they will return often, generate page views, and increase advertising revenue. Users can also serve to further explore an issue discussed in an article by broadening the discussion to include the viewpoints of those who aren’t professional journalists. However, publishers of news site comments have noted many problems with introducing user-generated content (UGC) to their sites, including the fact that users sometimes post inflammatory, insensitive, or lowquality comments that do not serve to improve the experience of the average reader. The problems caused by these kinds of comments have increased the amount of time and money required to moderate the comments section. Beyond inflammatory comments, however, is the problem of highlighting very good or high-quality comments. What is the degree to which those high-quality comments can be discovered through an automated process? This dissertation sought to test the extent to which comments to news sites can be automatically evaluated for quality by using a text-analysis system. Journalists were interviewed to get their views on user comments in general and comment quality in particular. The data from these interviews was used to generate hypotheses about which linguistic metrics provided by Coh-Metrix, a web-based text-analysis system, might be xiii most indicative of comment quality as described by journalists. Finally, a content analysis and close reading of a sample of news site comments was conducted in order to describe news site comments as a writing genre. Results from the interviews indicated that comment length, comment syntax, comment cohesion, comment narrativity, and comment individuality were all indicative of comment quality. However, statistical analyses on a sample of 246 comments failed to produce significant results for linguistic metrics hypothesized to be indicative of quality. Alternatively, an “positive engagement score” scale was created and used to identify how “engaging” comments were; this scale showed to have a significant, though minor, positive relationship with the number of recommendations a comment received from readers. Finally, the genre analysis of the sample of news site comments revealed that comments in the sample share a communicative purpose of providing additional content related to the article under discussion, providing a practical value for journalists and other professionals by offering tips and fact-checking functions, and providing a space where readers can debate the article in question and begin to develop a sense of community.

We nd that current hypotheses regarding the origin of vortex shedding do not apply for the inter- nal ow in a partially constricted two-dimensional channel. As a result, we postulate a novel mechanism to explain the origin of vortex splitting and shedding in this ge- ometry. Numerical simulations of the unsteady, two-dimensional, incompressible Navier{ Stokes equations are performed in a channel having a constriction modeled by a two- parameter Gaussian distribution on both channel walls. Reynolds numbers from 1 to 3000 based on inlet half-channel height and mean inlet velocity and constriction ratios of 0:25, 0:5 and 0:75 are considered. The Navier{Stokes solutions are observed to experience a number of bifurca- tions including unsteady behaviour with shear-layer uctuations and vortex shedding downstream of the constriction. A sequence of events is presented describing how a sustained shear layer instability leads to the unsteady vortex shedding phenomenon via a convective instability and a proposed streamwise pressure-gradient mechanism. In addition, a global linear stability analysis is performed on several station- ary Navier{Stokes solutions to determine the long-term temporal behavior of small amplitude perturbations. Finally, the implications of this research on the hemodynamics in the cephalic vein and potential failure of the brachiocephalic stula are addressed.

Show moreThe city of Aubretia will be a city for approximately one million people situated at the northern divergence point of the proposed California High-Speed Rail Authority system and the current San Joaquin Amtrak passenger rail service, located near Madera city. Having the largest population out of all 50 states and three cities —Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose—in the top ten list of most populous US cities, California certainly has the demand to support a high-speed rail system. The 2010 United States Census has also demonstrated a continuing trend of residents relocating from the Midwest and East Coast to the Sun belt states. All inhabitants of Aubretia will have access to a heavy two-rail system providing transportation to any other point in the city in 45 minutes or less. Development will be restricted to an area approximately one half mile in radius or a ten minute walking distance centered on each transit stop. Along with standard rapid transit stops in each development area there is also an interface with a central transportation hub connecting the Aubretia Metro to Amtrak and California High-Speed Rail as well as ground transportation options like regional bus and for-hire vehicles. The planned population level for Aubretia is based on a city size that can be served with a two-track automated metro system. The system will be capable of accommodating a majority of rush hour commuters at three persons per square meter density with a minimum headway of 90 seconds.

Show moreThe goal of this Thesis is the development of a comprehensive methodology to evaluate the total cost of water use in the recirculating cooling loops of thermoelectric power plants. This methodology expands upon the work presented in the literature to improve estimations of the economic impact of condenser fouling. The methods developed in this Thesis are incorporated into a user friendly Combined Cost Model (CCM) interface that will allow future researchers, students and plant personnel to perform the same comparative analyses presented herein. The objective of this Thesis is the application of the CCM to determine the economic viability of treated municipal wastewater (MWW) use to replace freshwater for cooling in power plants with recirculating cooling systems. To accomplish this objective, a set of case study evaluations are included to (1) evaluate the sensitivity of the economic impact of fouling to condenser design and operation, (2) determine the cost of treated MWW use in pulverized coal power plants, and (3) compare the relative cost of degraded water use in advanced power systems such as IGCC and oxy-combustion. The results of these evaluations show that current freshwater prices do not provide an economic incentive to switch to the use of treated MWW water. However, results indicate that the breakeven differential price of freshwater, at which the total costs of using freshwater and treated MWW are equal, is only 0.52 $/1000Gal. (USD 2009). In addition, the use of treated MWW for cooling is shown to be a better economic alternative to dry air cooling technology (DACT) for the conservation of freshwater resources. Cost-to-conservation estimates of treated MWW use are 1.1 $/1000 Gal., in contrast to 5.6 $/1000 Gal. for DACT. This Thesis also presents a novel, hybrid coal conversion concept, the dry gasification oxy-combustion (DGOC) power cycle. This process is similar to oxycombustion, in that it maintains a concentrated CO2 flue stream and does not utilize a complex separation step. However, coal conversion and sulfur removal are performed within a gasification unit. It is estimated to achieve CCS goals with a higher efficiency than the leading alternative strategies.
