Show moreThe intent of the IPRO 315 is to design a large-scale structure. The focus of this IPRO is structural analysis. The advisors of this group thought it would be even more interested if IPRO 335 and IPRO 315 would mesh together to create a large green structure. The intent of IPRO 335 is to design a “green” and innovative building using the skills and input of students studying different majors at Illinois Institute of Technology. Our team has decided to design a replacement apartment building for Gunsaulus Hall on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. Innovative technologies and practices will be researched and employed to design a “green” building. The decision to design a building for the IIT campus came about because it is an area that all of the team members could relate to and have a more realistic grasp on the project. For the remainder of the semester the two groups are planning on coordinating with each other on each step of the design process.

Show moreFor this semester IPRO 353’s purpose is to generate a steady public interest in the Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) that is located in the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) by reaching out to a target user base of retirees, inventors, craft hobbyist, and students. Feedback collected from these user groups will be used to create and establish a feasible program that sets out requirements for qualified users, provides new users with tutorials (or workshop), and implements a schedule for steady use of the Fab Lab by qualified users. The program will include a volunteer force such as a group of community service students trained in the lab that can oversea activities in the Fab Lab.

Show moreThe City of Chicago has been nominated as the U.S. Bid City for 2016 Olympic Games and currently remains a strong contender for this title. If Chicago is selected as the Host City it will face the enormous task of providing temporary housing for all Olympiad participants including athletes, coaches, organizers, and media reporters. Continuing in the vein of last semester’s IPRO, our IPRO is proposing an economical and environmentally friendly solution to this challenge. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are cluttering up shipping yards in the Chicago area and to convert them into low-cost housing units. With proper foresight, this challenge can become an opportunity for the I P R O 3 3 9 City to demonstrate an attitude of sustainability that can serve as a model for other cities around the world to follow suit. The intense media attention directed towards the Olympic Games could be channeled to showcase our commitment to environmentally and socially responsible actions.

Show moreIPRO 303 is working on the user interface for SmartSignal Corporation’s software which predicts equipment failures in coal fired power plants. We are now in the third stage of the project. We are to deliver the user interface of the software based on the studies done by two previous semesters. SmartSignal suggested that we also consider specific elements of the software such as the clear presentation of developing fault information, and the efficient communication system between users. An appropriate UI will utilize SmartSignal’s predictive analysis software to provide an efficient and clear means for power plant personnel to: · Predict or identify equipment faults · Understand the predicted faults · Prioritize the disposition of the predicted faults or highlight urgent or important faults · Reduce the need for plant personnel to have many years of experience or “institutional knowledge” The ultimate goal of this project is to introduce an innovative approach to the user interface which SmartSignal can use for predicting equipment failures in coal fire power plants. To realize this, we set these objectives. · Research and collect information relative to the User Interfaces [UI] from the first hand users of the software while examining the study done by the previous IPRO303. · Create the Requirements Document for the UI in light of the concerns expressed by SmartSignal and the results of research. · Generate several possible UIs based upon the Requirements Document stated above. · Select one of the Several UI for development of details and revise it based upon the input from SmartSignal. · Add details and finalize the design of the selected UI.

Show moreMaximum multi ow (MMF) and maximum concurrent multi ow (MCMF) in multi-channel multi-radio (MC-MR) wireless networks have been well-studied in the literature. They are NP-hard even in single-channel single-radio (SC-SR) wireless networks when all nodes have uniform (and xed) interference radii and the positions of all nodes are available. This disertation studies maximum multi ow (MMF) and maximum concur- rent multi ow (MCMF) in muliti-channel multi-radio multihop wireless networks under the protocol interference model in the bidirectional mode or the unidirectional mode. We introduce a ne-grained network representation of multi-channel multi- radio multihop wireless networks and present some essential topological properties of its associated con ict graph. It was proved that if the number of channels is bounded by a constant (which is typical in practical networks), both MMF and MCMF admit a polynomial-time ap- proximation scheme under the protocol interference model in the bidirectional mode or the unidirectional mode with some additional mild conditions. However, the run- ning time of these algorithms grows quickly with the number of radios per node (at least in the sixth order) and the number of channels (at least in the cubic order). Such poor scalability stems intrinsically from the exploding size of the ne-grained network representation upon which those algorithms are built. In Chapter 2 of this dissertation, we introduce a new structure, termed as concise con ict graph, on the node-level links directly. Such structure succinctly captures the essential advantage of multiple radios and multiple channels. By exploring and exploiting the rich structural properties of the concise con ict graphs, we are able to develop fast and scalable link scheduling algorithms for either minimizing the communication latency or maximizing the (concurrent) multi ow. These algorithms have running time growing linearly in both the number of radios per node and the number of channels, while not sacri cing the approximation bounds. While the algorithms we develop in Chapter 2 admit a polynomial-time ap- proximation scheme (PTAS) when the number of channels is bounded by a constant, such PTAS is quite infeasible practically. Other than the PTAS, all other known approximation algorithms, in both SC-SR wireless networks and MC-MR wireless networks, resorted to solve a polynomial-sized linear program (LP) exactly. The s- calability of their running time is fundamentally limited by the general-purposed LP solvers. In Chapter 3 of this dissertation, we rst introduce the concept of interference costs and prices of a path and explore their relations with the maximum (concurrent) multi ow. Then we develop purely combinatorial approximation algorithms which compute a sequence of least interference-cost routing paths along which the ows are routed. These algorithms are faster and simpler, and achieve nearly the same approximation bounds known in the literature. This dissertation also explores the stability analysis of two link scheduling in MC-MR wireless networks under the protocol interference model in the bidirectional mode or the unidirectional mode. Longest-queue- rst (LQF) link scheduling is a greedy link scheduling in multihop wireless networks. Its stability performance in single-channel single-radio (SC-SR) wireless networks has been well studied recently. However, its stability performance in multi-channel multi-radio (MC-MR) wireless networks is largely under-explored. We present a stability subregion with closed form of the LQF scheduling in MC-MR wireless networks, which is within a constant factor of the network stability region. We also obtain constant lower bounds on the efficiency ratio of the LQF scheduling in MC-MR wireless networks under the protocol interference model in the bidirectional mode or unidirectional mode. Static greedy link schedulings have much simpler implementation than dy- namic greedy link schedulings such as Longest-queue-frst (LQF) link scheduling. However, its stability performance in multi-channel multi-radio (MC-MR) wireless networks is largely under-explored. In this dissertation, we present a stability subre- gion with closed form of a static greedy link scheduling in MC-MR wireless networks under the protocol interference model in the bidirectional mode. By adopting some special static link orderings, the stability subregion is within a constant factor of the stable capacity region of the network. We also obtain constant lower bounds on the throughput efficiency ratios of the static greedy link schedulings in some special static link orderings.

Show moreRecreational fishing is a sizable market, generating over a billion dollars of economic output and providing well over a million American’s with jobs. There are many variations of fishing hooks available that retain the same basic shape and structure, the most popular examples being, the standard J-hook, treble hook and the new “Trokar”, which is “surgically sharpened”. However, there are many limitations associated with existing fishing hooks. One such limitation is that fishing hooks are not able to reliably hold the fish after embedding. Introducing a barb to the hook usually solves this issue, doing so however creates problems when setting the hook and furthermore, barbs can cause damage to the fish during the removal process. Another concern is that contemporary fishing hooks have problems with snagging on nearby rock formations, algae, weeds, or other vegetation in the water.

Show moreOne of the most difficult obstacles facing non-western nations is the issue of technology transfer. The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the how South Korea has succeeded through industrial upgrading through technology transfer in achieving the Han River Miracle- making it in 2011, the fourth largest economy in Asia and the 9th largest in the world. From 1910 to 1945, Korean modernization was continuously developed under the Japanese war economy and its military policy. Japanese capital, technology and entrepreneurs were transferred to Korea due to supplement the shortages of Japanese industries or to take advantage of the low labor costs in Korea in order to prepare for the Sino-Japanese War in 1936 and the Pacific War in 1941. There is no doubt that President Chung-Hee Park (1961-1979) was the architect of the Korean economic miracle. During his authoritarian regime, the government had played an important role in the creation and financing of the modern Korean industrial groupings, called the Chaebols. The government also intervened directly in the formation of their policies. In the 1980s, when the country embarked on financial liberalization, the degree of intervention started to decrease. And finally, the 1997 crisis will be examined, with special attention on the introduction of reforms required by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In the industrial arena, the focus will be on the rationalization policies undertaken to increase the total factor productivity (TFP). It will cover the currently important industries of steel, automobiles and semiconductors, as well as those promising industries which have led the development of South Korea's knowledge-intensive economy. An integral part of the xi ii analysis will study the repercussions of the 1997 financial reforms on both the large and small and medium-size industries. Conventional wisdom assumes that it was under President Park's rule that South Korea had its first experience with industrialization. This assumption, however, ignores the significant industrialization that took place during the colonial period. It also does not take into account the admittedly limited industrial development that took place during the time before the 1961 coup d'état, when civilian governments were in charge. The dissertation would shed light on these overlooked periods.

The philosophy behind IPRO 332 is that people should be sufficiently educated about their own energy choices to be able think critically about the corresponding consequences. This IPRO team will build on the work underway since Spring 2007 in developing effective methods for educating high school students about energy and sustainability, expanding our outreach to junior high school students. In addition, the team will: (1) Construct a Teaching Kit to extend the reach of the program beyond the Chicago metropolitan area to provide educators with the materials they will need to present the modules on their own and tailor it to their classrooms; (2) Complete the full-scale launch of the organization’s website, www.howmanyearths.com, to enrich the learning experience, provide a professional contact interface and build a community of engaged teachers and students; (3) Execute a formal marketing plan to build awareness of our efforts, establish our brand image, promote our work, and greatly increase visibility; and (4) Pursue grants and funding with the goal of establishing a viable, long-term, not-for-profit organization.

This project offers a great opportunity to meet and serve a lot of different people on campus and in the community. This will increase the interaction and liaison of Tech News with campus organizations, our fellow students, faculty and staff at other campuses, and members of the communities in proximity to the IIT campus. The objectives of this group, as set forth by the sponsor, Seth Lewis of the Manhattan Group, are: 1. To determine the amount of force needed to cut 6, 8, and 10 sheets of 20 lb. paper taking into account the length and width of the shred 2. To design an efficient gear train that optimizes the number of gears and minimizes the motor size 3. To develop acoustical sound dampeners to reduce the amount of noise created during the shredding process by 10 decibels. The team will seek to accomplish these goals through the use of computer simulation, extended research, and laboratory testing and error. By the end of the semester the team anticipates having developed a mathematical model that will allow for the minimization of the amount of force used to shred various amounts of paper, to have built a gear train that works better and lasts longer, and to have noticeably reduced the amount of noise created by the shredder. The IPRO Team’s goal is to implement all of these changes to create a shredder with improved performance, reliability, and life span without increasing cost.
