Show moreIn light of the global sustainability movement, several mainstream ideas and designs for low to zero carbon emission vehicles have been developed. In the case of all electric vehicles (EVs), Li-Ion batteries seem to be the favored technology due to their high energy density relative to competing energy storage technologies. Despite its superiority to other batteries, it still lacks the energy density to practically achieve comparable range to a fossil fuel powered car, and faces additional challenges in terms of refueling and infrastructure development. Therefore, technologies are needed to ease this demand and possibly supplement it. IPRO 313 has undertaken the task of using Zinc as an electrochemical fuel. The design is based on a Zinc-Air fuel cell developed by John F. Cooper of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) [1]. The design allows the zinc to be provided as < 1 mm sized pellets in a saturated solution of KOH. Using Zinc as a fuel means that exhausted fuel, ZnO, can be recycled. The fact that the metal is recyclable lends this technology to requiring a minimum of new material to sustain the transportation infrastructure. Most importantly, in comparison to current refueling mechanisms, Cooper et. al showed that a battery can be refueled in less than 10 minutes [2] making it a good competitor in the current and emerging eco-friendly vehicle market of which the IPRO plans to build on. So far the IPRO has designed and constructed one prototype and conducted pressure drop experiments. The plans now are to improve the current ZAFC design and investigate the relationship between the electrolyte flow rate and the energy output. Once the single ZAFC has been tested and is providing the output needed, several more will be constructed and put together in an array to supplement the primary battery pack used to provide instantaneous power to the electric engine. Subsequently, the team will begin working on the staple of the project which is to design a mechanism which will refuel the ZAFC array by replacing the old electrolyte and zinc solution with a fresh electrolyte and zinc to all cells.

Show moreThere are currently around 40 million people living in urban slums without adequate water and sanitation in India. In addition, there is no sewage system in urban slums and water is not being recycled. In a particular slum in Mumbai that we are looking at, people need to walk to the foothill 2km away in order to get water. It takes a lot of time to carry su cient amount of water for a family for daily use. Water obtained in this way is primarily used for washing. Since there is no private place for people to wash, people often wash themselves on the street and the water is simply wasted. Our team attempted to address two main issues for this semester. Firstly, we tried to provide people with clean and private facility for washing while allowing the water to be recycled. Secondly, we tried to make transporting water easier and more e cient by developing a device that allows you to carry water on your back.

For some, ideas about GM crops are exciting and represent hope for new potential in science and agriculture, for others they represent potential danger, and for others there are simply many unanswered questions. Our goal this semester will be to create a new source of information about GM products and to provide information that will answer the many questions we all have about this important subject. To do this, our objectives will be to: 1. Collect background information in an unbiased and comprehensive manner about laws and regulations regarding genetically modified crops. 2. Gather information about public opinion concerning GM crops. 3. Present facts about the processes and technologies that are used in this industry. 4. Show moreTo improve the wear resistance of titanium and extend its service life, coating boron nitride thin films on the surface of titanium matrix was studied in this work. To obtain surface property enhancement, the samples were coated by isothermal sintering at 1000°C – 1400°C in a vacuum furnace for 2h, 4h or 6h. The microstructure of the thin film was investigated employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). To identify the composition of interlayers between BN and Ti, EDS analysis was run through the whole reaction zone. It showed that the BN was being consumed, titanium borides (TiB and TiB2), titanium nitride (TiN1-x), and solid solution of nitrogen in titanium (α-Ti (N)) layers formed at the interface between the BN coating and Ti matrix. Correspondingly, the XRD analysis indicated that TiB, TiB2, TiN, and α-Ti(N) phases were presented in good agreement with the EDS result. The layers grew fast in the sintering process which benefited from the fine grain size and highly oriented layers grown in the reaction zone. However, the well-known parabolic diffusional growth is only part of mechanisms for explaining the reactiondiffusion kinetics. The diffusion paths were obtained from the phase sequences at the interface between BN and Ti and thus could be represented on the isothermal section of the B-N-Ti ternary diagram. Moreover, the influence of the sintering temperature and the length of the actual sintering period on the layer sequences and thickness of the reaction zone were investigated. The micro-hardness test results showed that the Ti matrix with deposited BN thin films exhibited significant increased surface hardness. Obviously, the surface hardness xiii rose along with sintering temperature and holding time, and the hardness could be improved over 50%.

Residential garage door operators currently utilize an IR emitter and detector pair to identify the presence of an object breaking the "beam". This sensor is used to reduce the risk of a moving garage door striking an object in its path.The IPRO team will investigate the use of an inexpensive CCD camera to replace, and potentially expand, this functionality. The scope of this project will include but not necessarily be limited to: (a) understanding regulatory requirements for devices currently used on operators, and attempting to anticipate how current requirements will be interpreted and or modified to cover this new sensor, (b) identifying optical and electronic requirements to meet anticipated regulatory requirements, (c) examining current patents for devices utilizing similar technology, (d) developing a single sample device optimized for minimum development time and (e) estimating the projected cost for this system, when optimized for functionality, cost and produceability.
