Show moreIPRO 307 is following the path of its predecessors in order to help improve the shipping transportations and facilities in Kankakee County, IL. While there have been other IPRO teams that have contributed to the modernization of the intermodal system at MI-Jack Shipping Company, our sponsor is now looking for us to further their research in this field. They would also like us to further the research in high speed intermodal along with a viaduct enhancement system. One of our tasks is to select a location in Kankakee County to place the intermodal system. We have decided to break this into two locations with one being in-city and the other being out-of-city. Kankakee County has been selected because two major rail lines pass through it. There is also a highway that runs through the center of it. Therefore, it is an ideal 2 location for an intermodal yard. Also, there is a wind farm being built in Kankakee, so we will be able to save energy by thinking green. In our selection process for a location, we may need to relocate some people. Therefore, our plan is to have affordable housing at our out-of-city location. We will design this affordable housing along with the warehouses and storage facilities, which go along with the design of an intermodal yard.

Show moreIPRO 340 (The Idea Fermentors) is working with Rock Bottom Brewery to determine alternative uses for the spent grain the brewery produces. Over 1,000 pounds of spent grain are produced at each of the three area locations weekly. Spent grain has many applications because of its high content of protein and fiber. Applications range from production of bio-plastics and bio-fuel, to agricultural uses as animal feed and compost material, to reuse as food for people. A major issue that Rock Bottom Brewery faces is that spent grain spoils very quickly, so alternative uses of spent grain must happen within a matter of days. IPRO 340 will determine what will be the best use of Rock Bottom Brewery’s spent grain in terms of logistics, cost, practicality, and environmental impact. The Idea Fermentors will lean and understand the brewery process and various applications for spent grain, as it pertains to Rock Bottom Brewery. The team will work together to accomplish project requirements as set forth by the IPRO office at IIT on time as well as satisfy the sponsor company’s needs.

Show moreIPRO 325’s objective is to create a program at IIT which looks to make an impact in the most immediate problems dealing with the world’s rural poor. We seek to do this by becoming familiar with the current trends and events throughout the world which address these poverty issues. We will also examine the Agencies and Universities which are working towards annihilating the world’s grossly impoverished areas.

Show moreFabrication Laboratories (Fab Labs) were started as a community outreach program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to provide digital fabrication tools for rapid prototyping to the general public. The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago (MSI) has partnered with this IPRO to further develop their existing Fab Lab. IPRO 333 has been assigned the task of working with the Fab Lab administrators to design methodologies for furthering the use of the laboratory and determining its end goals for both the museum and the community. Once these goals are established, we will support them with a list of projects that we will create and execute. By working with the lab directors to broaden the possible uses of the lab, we hope to encourage hands-on learning in local schools. This will promote membership at MSI and involve the community in science and technology programs and education. To accomplish this, we have broken into two teams, each of which will focus on a different audience. The first team will be responsible for designing and creating programs for more advanced and knowledgeable users of the equipment specific to the Fab Lab, such as the students enrolled in the Science Achievers program as well as museum members; the second team will be responsible for designing and implementing programs for less advanced users with more constrained timeframes, such as visiting families or groups of school children.

Show moreCascade and multivariable control of a high temperature shot? time (HTST) pasteurization system were tested and compared with the performance of single-loop feedback control. Multivariable control was implemented on the basis of computations of product temperatures that yield equivalent lethality at a residence time of 15 s at 161 degrees F in the holding tube. Both cascade and multivariable controllers reduced product temperature fluctuations and overshoot compared to single-loop feedback control. Multivariable control was based on on-line computation of equivalent total lethality and it permitted operation at variable flow rates or at the most desirable temperatures for product quality and functionality. Show moreThis project focuses on building a three-dimensional high quality "mesh" for scientific simulations. Since the quality of the mesh affects the accuracy and convergence of numerical systems, having a high quality mesh is one of the most important requirements for conducting numerical simulations. Currently, most of the software packages cannot theoretically guarantee the quality of the mesh generated. The purpose of this project is to implement a selected set of algorithms that have a theoretical quality guarantee in order to study their practical performance compared with heuristics-based methods. We expect that peer researchers in various fields could use the software developed to conduct scientific simulations. In addition, the developed software will also provide the building block for later numerical simulation systems and computer graphics related systems. The major activities of the project are to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge related to computer science and other engineering departments. This project provides students from engineering and other fields with knowledge of computer science, including programming, algorithm design and analysis; and provides students from computer science with knowledge of scientific simulations and how to apply their knowledge to solve practical engineering problems.

Show moreThis IPRO team will have the responsibility of extending Operation Kosovo. Operation Kosovo is an IIT-Chicago Kent initiative to promote rule of law, democracy, civil society, and economic development in Kosovo. Students will continue work on projects such as: providing research assistance to legal counsel in Kosovo through CDRC; providing support to the University of Pristina law school's student organization; establishing a Kosovo Leadership Council, a Small Business Assistance Clinic, and a Kosovo investment fund; establishing firm contact with Kosovars in the Diaspora; maintaining support for the University of Pristina law school's externship program; website updating; and posting Kosovar law on the internet. There may also be an opportunity to structure a process for developing business plans for new enterprises in Kosovo as the team's work moves forward. Students who join this team will have the opportunity to make a positive and lasting contribution to the people of Kosovo; and will develop a deep appreciation for how social, political, technology and economic factors combine to influence rule of law.
