Show moreThe team of IPRO 339’s main objective is to assist Burgess-Norton Manufacturing Company with eliminating a persisting problem that has been affecting the company for many years. Burgess-Norton Manufacturing Company is the world’s largest manufacturer of piston pins, as well as the leading producer of powder metal parts. Supplying many major car companies across the world, Burgess-Norton thrives on maintaining a high standard of quality in both their products and services. Recently there has been a change in the automobile industry that has affected the way piston pins are manufactured. These changes have brought on difficulties for the company as they must now change their product specs and adapt to the evolving market. Their main problem is the existence of nicks on the piston pins. The main goal of this IPRO team is to find a way to eliminate these nicks that occur throughout the company’s manufacturing process. This document will outline the main objectives and tasks that the team has been assigned with. Team structures, time lines and other plans are included. Also, a further company history and description of Burgess-Norton will be provided in order to make the objectives more clear.

Show moreThe team working on this project has set itself three major objectives. Firstly it strives to create a comprehensive and in-depth database containing valuable information concerning sustainability. This database should be user-friendly and intuitively presented so people who are interested in sustainability are quickly educated with the key points and have easy access to relevant and high quality references and further readings. The second objective of this project essentially consists of creating a roadmap and master plan on how to make Illinois Institute of Technology’s (IIT) Main Campus sustainable. This will be done by auditing and then benchmarking IIT to other similar projects. This roadmap and master plan will be developed with the vision that once implemented IIT will be a leader in sustainability and encourage many others to follow our track. Lastly the third objective is to create a house of the future. The house of the future has many objectives for itself. It should incorporate current design possibilities and make use of various available technologies to be sustainable and energy efficient among other things. This house should attract the public and educate them how easily sustainability can be achieved using current technology and knowledge at a competitive price.

Show moreGenetically modified crops have come to play an increasingly large role in our daily lives. Unfortunately these crops remain a mystery to much of the general population. For some, ideas about GM crops are exciting and represent hope for new potential in science and agriculture, for others they represent potential danger, and for others there are simply many unanswered questions. Our goal this semester will be to create a new source of information about GM products and to provide information that will answer the many questions we all have about this important subject. To do this, our objectives will be to: 1. Collect background information in an unbiased and comprehensive manner about laws and regulations regarding genetically modified crops. 2. Gather information about public opinion concerning GM crops. 3. Present facts about the processes and technologies that are used in this industry. 4. Create a database of known genetically modified crops, potential allergens, and traits in order to provide future IPRO’s with a foundation of knowledge concerning GM crops.

Show moreIPRO 340 (The Idea Fermentors) is working with Rock Bottom Brewery to determine alternative uses for the spent grain the brewery produces. Over 1,000 pounds of spent grain are produced at each of the three area locations weekly. Spent grain has many applications because of its high content of protein and fiber. Applications range from production of bio-plastics and bio-fuel, to agricultural uses as animal feed and compost material, to reuse as food for people. A major issue that Rock Bottom Brewery faces is that spent grain spoils very quickly, so alternative uses of spent grain must happen within a matter of days. IPRO 340 will determine what will be the best use of Rock Bottom Brewery’s spent grain in terms of logistics, cost, practicality, and environmental impact. The Idea Fermentors will lean and understand the brewery process and various applications for spent grain, as it pertains to Rock Bottom Brewery. The team will work together to accomplish project requirements as set forth by the IPRO office at IIT on time as well as satisfy the sponsor company’s needs.

Show moreIPRO346 will focus on familiarizing itself with British Petroleum’s (BP) wastewater treatment plant (WTP) for its oil refinery in Whiting, IN. Specifically, this IPRO will analyze the current permits and their stipulations regarding the amount of ammonia and total suspended solids (TSS) in the wastewater being dumped in Lake Michigan. Ultimately, possible methods and designs will be devised to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS remaining in treated wastewater. These designs will take the form of a process flow sheet with a computer simulation to model the designs. At the culmination of this IPRO we will have several different models for possible upgrades to the Whiting refinery wastewater treatment plant to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS in the wastewater entering Lake Michigan as well as a cost to implement each solution.

Show moreThe team will organize and conduct a conference to address the question of what is the status of our knowledge about human consciousness. This will provide interested students an opportunity to develop and apply project management skills, and develop many contacts in various professional areas in academia, government agencies, professional societies and professional services firms, social services organizations, and a range of associated health fields. The question of human consciousness has philosophical, psychological, and neurobiological dimensions. The 90s were the decade of the brain. The genome project has focused attention on the evolution of the brain especially with the emergence of the discipline of evolutionary psychology. A conference (following the format of the previous one-day conference we organized and conducted on November 7, 1998, The Ganges River Pollution Problem) will display the several dimensions of the question via presentations by experts representing the range of complementary issues and areas of study associated with the topic of human consciousness. Self-awareness is a source of wonder and curiosity for all humans. A conference with this focus will give all of us that comprise the IIT community an opportunity to explore with, and gain insight from, experts in each of the relevant fields of knowledge to advance our own levels of understanding about this fascinating phenomenon.

Show moreIPRO 303 is working on the user interface for SmartSignal Corporation’s software which predicts equipment failures in coal fired power plants. We are now in the third stage of the project. We are to deliver the user interface of the software based on the studies done by two previous semesters. SmartSignal suggested that we also consider specific elements of the software such as the clear presentation of developing fault information, and the efficient communication system between users. An appropriate UI will utilize SmartSignal’s predictive analysis software to provide an efficient and clear means for power plant personnel to: · Predict or identify equipment faults · Understand the predicted faults · Prioritize the disposition of the predicted faults or highlight urgent or important faults · Reduce the need for plant personnel to have many years of experience or “institutional knowledge” The ultimate goal of this project is to introduce an innovative approach to the user interface which SmartSignal can use for predicting equipment failures in coal fire power plants. To realize this, we set these objectives. · Research and collect information relative to the User Interfaces [UI] from the first hand users of the software while examining the study done by the previous IPRO303. · Create the Requirements Document for the UI in light of the concerns expressed by SmartSignal and the results of research. · Generate several possible UIs based upon the Requirements Document stated above. · Select one of the Several UI for development of details and revise it based upon the input from SmartSignal. · Add details and finalize the design of the selected UI.

Show moreThe objective of this IPRO is to choose an appropriate method (or combination of multiple methods) for desulfurizing coal before combustion takes place in a furnace for energy production. Three methods will be researched in order to find the best way of desulfurization- physical, chemical, and biological. Whichever method(s) is found to be the most effective at removing sulfur from coal will be chosen. After this decision the group will move forward and design the process equipment; later an economic assessment will be done to cost the equipment. All of the group’s goals will be completed within this semester.

Our goal is to give PowerPoint presentations to several different audiences, especially today’s younger generations in elementary school, high school, and college, in order to both educate and interest people in these issues. Our presentations are meant to be objective – we want to present the facts about global warming research from credible sources. Additionally, with the help of our website and contacts, we hope to be another driving force in the sustainability movement and climate change research. Our purpose can be summed up in a quote included at the end of each of our presentations: “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” – Charles Darwin
