Cathode Ray Tube Magnetic Reproducer for Video
An electron beam head for reproducing magnetically recorded video signals wherein magnetic fields from the record medium are channeled to the interior of the envelope to deflect the primary electrons transversely to the scanning direction of the beam. In one embodiment, the sensing electrodes are at opposite sides of the magnetic field region at an end wall of the envelope, while in another embodiment the primary electron beam passes through the openings in a grid of magnetic wires so as to interact with the magnetic fields therebetween, electrostatic deflecting means serving to deflect the electron beam through a substantial angle as it leaves the grid so as to impinge on sensing electrodes remote from the grid. In a third embodiment, secondary electrons are conducted into a branch tube extending from the main envelope and a single electrode senses the degree of deflection of the secondary electrons by the magnetic fields permeating the secondary emission region., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent
Dimension 3D Window Manager (Spring 2001) IPRO 306: Dimension 3D Window Manager IPRO306 Spring2001 Final Presentation
he goal of this project is to create a functional workstation with a "virtual reality" primary interface that simulates three- dimensional space. This is to be based on publicly available software, namely, Linuxand Mesa GL, in order to provide an affordable for the average person. The three main parts of the project are to design a functional but attractive interface that simulates three-dimensional space, program the design into an "X" Windows window manager, interface some hardware device capable of providing an realistic means of control in 3D space - we are currently looking at a Nintendo Powerglove. This project requires students capable of and/or interested in learning to develop customized software programs, interfacing hardware and software, and balancing the need for processing complex graphical information against the need to keep the design simple, affordable and easily utilized by the average person. This project, initiated by a former CS student, Nate Burns, and carried forward by Bryan Smant, a current CPE student, benefits from a joint effort of students from computer science, electrical and computer engineering, design and architecture, Sponsorship: IIT Internal R&D, Project Plan for IPRO 306: Dimension 3D Window Manager for the Spring 2001 semester
Multiple Video Signal Transducing System and Method
Method and apparatus for transducing a plurality of video signals on a record medium by interlacing recorded fields of different signals along a channel, and using a series of scanners or a scanner with shiftable scanning beam for repeatedly reproducing each recorded field, or using a scanner and a repeater device to reproduce and repeat each recorded signal, and thus provide for display of a continuous sequence of fields, while using much less record medium for a given program., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent
FLIP-FLOP JET NOZZLE EXTENDED TO SUPERSONIC FLOWS
An experiment studying a fluidically oscillated rectangular jet flow was conducted. The Mach number was varied over a range from low subsonic to supersonic. Unsteady velocity and pressure measurements were made using hot wires, piezoresistive pressure transducers, and pitot probes. In addition, smoke flow visualization using high-speed photography was used to document the oscillation of the jet. For the subsonic flip-flop jet, it was found that the apparent time-mean widening of the jet was not accompanied by an increase in the mass flux. Fluidically oscillated jets up to a Mach number of about 0.5 have been reported before, but to our knowledge there is no information on fluidically oscillated supersonic jets. It was found that it is possible to extend the operation of these devices to supersonic flows. The streamwise velocity perturbation levels produced by this device were much higher than the perturbation levels that could be produced using conventional excitation sources such as acoustic drivers. In view of this ability to produce high amplitudes, the potential for using a small-scale fluidically oscillated jet as an unsteady excitation source for the control of shear flows in full-scale practical applications seems promising.

New Harbor Village (Semester Unknown) IPRO 356
New Harbor Village (Semester Unknown) IPRO 356
The aim of this project was to design a use for the area around the Michael Reese memorial. This area is currently unused and the city has asked for ideas to use the area. The previous IPRO had designed an extended living facility to be placed in the area. This was a good start but there is an extensive amount of land that is still unused. The city wishes to utilize this land so that the maximum amount of tax revenue can be seen. This semester, the IPRO team took what was suggested last year and improved it by developing a hotel, residential, and retail area. The plan called for different phases in which each area was either developed or added to during each phase. Extensive research was done to calculate number of units and location of the units. In the future the IPRO should future its research in the cost aspect of the project., Deliverables

Transducer Apparatus
A video and/or audio magnetic transducer apparatus includes a capstan assembly formed with at least one annular groove therein and a compressible medium in the groove for nonrigidly backing a recording medium opposite a recording channel thereon. Adjustable stop means limit movement of a transducer head cooperable with the capstan when the head is in a cooperable operating position with respect to the recording medium for preventing damage thereto., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

Method and Apparatus for Gas Analysis Utilizing a Direct Current Discharge
A method and apparatus for spectrochemical analysis of a gas is provided in which the subject gas is mixed with a carrier gas and introduced into an analysis space between two electrodes. A continuous direct current discharge between the electrodes is produced which sustains a plasma formed from the carrier gas so that components of the subject gas are excited to luminescence. Characteristic radiation emitted by the components is then detected. The carrier gas has a higher ionization potential than components of the subject gas and, for example, may be a noble gas. The method is operable at atmospheric pressure. The electrodes may be either solid wires or tubes through which the gas mixture enters and leaves the analysis space., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

The Universal Car Project (Summer 2011) IPRO 348
The Universal Car Project (Summer 2011) IPRO 348
The Universal Car Project is an attempt to utilize the web to design and specify a “universal” platform upon which a wide range of functional vehicles can be designed for developing countries. The method for developing the car will be to start with a “wiki-type” organization that will develop the standards for the basic platform, including wheel-base, construction method, materials, and standard mounting points. Once the basic platform has been standardized, the rest of the car will have an “open architecture”. Everyone who has interest and expertise could utilize the basic platform to design parts/assemblies to turn it into a complete vehicle. Individuals/companies/countries would be able to customize the platform to produce any type of vehicle that was needed or desired. This IPRO will design the process for developing the Universal Car Organization (UCO), which would design and license the basic platform and make sure that its standards were maintained. The UCO would also certify that parts/assemblies were attachable to the basic platform. Otherwise they would allow individuals/companies/countries to design and build whatever type of vehicles needed in their countries/regions. This would utilize the expertise of many more individuals and companies than is now available to the automobile industry., Sponsorship: NA, Project Plan for IPRO 348: The Universal Car Project for the Summer 2011 semester
Designing Affordable Energy, Water, And Shelter Solutions For The World's Poor (Semester Unknown) IPRO 325
Designing Affordable Energy, Water, And Shelter Solutions For The World's Poor (Semester Unknown) IPRO 325
There are currently around 40 million people living in urban slums without adequate water and sanitation in India. In addition, there is no sewage system in urban slums and water is not being recycled. In a particular slum in Mumbai that we are looking at, people need to walk to the foothill 2km away in order to get water. It takes a lot of time to carry su cient amount of water for a family for daily use. Water obtained in this way is primarily used for washing. Since there is no private place for people to wash, people often wash themselves on the street and the water is simply wasted. Our team attempted to address two main issues for this semester. Firstly, we tried to provide people with clean and private facility for washing while allowing the water to be recycled. Secondly, we tried to make transporting water easier and more e cient by developing a device that allows you to carry water on your back., Deliverables
