Measurement of the charged kaon correlations at small relative momentum in the SELEX experiment
We report the first measurement of charged kaon Bose–Einstein correlations produced by 600 GeV/c Σ−, π− and 540 GeV/c p beams in the SELEX experiment. The SELEX (E781) experiment at Fermilab is a fixed target three–stage magnetic spectrometer designed for study hadroproduction at high acceptance for forward interactions (xF ≥ 0.1). One–dimensional charged kaon correlation functions were obtained for all three beams and three pair transverse momentum ranges. The femtoscopic parameters for the radii and correlation strength of the kaon source were extracted. The fit results show the decrease of the emission source radii with the increase of the pair transverse momentum., Sponsorship: IIT College of Science, High Energy Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory

Semantic Web News Engine (Semester Unknown) IPRO 327
The Swyne Project‟s objective is to extend the capabilities of the semantic search engine developed in the previous semester of this particular IPRO project. Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results., Deliverables

Solar Decathlon 2011 (Semester Unknown) IPRO 352
Solar Decathlon 2011 (Semester Unknown) IPRO 352
This EnPRO project is the first of several designed to position IIT for a competitive proposal entry in 2009 for the Solar Decathlon 2011 competition. The Solar Decathlon is a competition in which 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. The Solar Decathlon is also an event to which the public is invited to observe the powerful combination of solar energy, energy efficiency, and the best in home design. This year the event will take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. October 12 - 20. The team houses are open for touring everyday except Wednesday, October 17, when they will close for competition purposes. An overall winner is announced on Friday, October 19 at 2 p.m. Teams of college students design a solar house, knowing from the outset that it must be powered entirely by the sun. In a quest to stretch every last watt of electricity that's generated by the solar panels on their roofs, the students absorb the lesson that energy is a precious commodity. They strive to innovate, using high-tech materials and design elements in ingenious ways. Along the way, the students learn how to raise funds and communicate about team activities. They collect supplies and talk to contractors. They build their solar houses, learning as they go. The 20 teams transport their solar houses to the competition site on the National Mall and virtually rebuild them in the solar village. Teams assemble their houses, and then the active phase of the Solar Decathlon begins with an opening ceremony for students, media, and invited guests. The teams compete in contests, and even though this part of the Solar Decathlon gets the most attention, the students really win the competition through the many months of fundraising, planning, designing, analyzing, redesigning, and finally building and improving their homes. The public is invited to tour the solar homes and event exhibits during much of the competition., Deliverables
Method for Treating Radioactive Waste
Ion exchange resins contaminated with a radioactive component are treated by exposing the contaminated ion exchange resins to a bound radio frequency electric field for uniformly heating them to drive off water. The dried ion exchange resins are then uniformly heated by a transversely uniform bound radio frequency electric field to a second higher temperature which chemically inactivates the functional groups of the ion exchange resins to destroy their hydrophilic property and convert them to a stabilized product for long-term safe storage., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

Method for the Construction and Utilization of a Medical Records System
A method for the construction and utilization of a medical records system capable of providing a continuous data stream of epidemiological data to the records system via kits provided to the symptomatic population to obtain and record an epidemiological profile in a searchable database by applying data mining or automated intelligence techniques whereby, when a valid epidemiological profile is established in the database, automated diagnosis and prescription of treatment may be had for patients presenting similar symptoms. Knowledge discovery techniques may further operate on the database to provide suggested courses of treatment for a virtual class of patients, epidemic threat awareness, and knowledge of drug resistance mutations by a pathogen without direct query of the database., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology and Northwestern University, United States Patent
Simply Park (Semester Unknown) IPRO 365
Simply Park (Semester Unknown) IPRO 365
Efficiency in parking facilities has been set to low standards since self-parking was introduced in the 1950s1. As technology has developed, parking has been left in the past. Drivers are increasingly realizing the problem as they become accustomed to other technology, which increases the efficiency of their lives (eg smartphones). While driving around searching for an open lot, circling a garage for an parking spot, or wandering through garage a looking for a parked car, people have time to ponder the many improvements that should be made to the parking experience. Simply Park: IPRO 365 is taking initiative to seize the possibilities new technologies offer the parking industry. The result should be improved driver experience as well as increased efficiency and profitability of parking facilities. The system will include signs visible to passersby that display the number of vacancies within a parking facility. Once in the parking facility, additional signs will direct drivers to sections of the facility with vacancies. Colored lights above each parking spot will indicate the state of occupancy for quick reference when looking down an aisle. When a driver parks, the ticket they receive at the entrance gate will associate their ticket to the spot they parked in, so when the driver returns to the facility he/she can present his/her ticket to a kiosk which will notify him/her how to get back to his/her car. As the vehicle leaves the ticket association will be reset and displays will update to show one more spot available. Additional interfaces through mobile and internet applications will further expedite the parking process. 1National, Deliverables
ChlorAlert (Spring 2002) IPRO 353
The prototypes for a railroad tank car monitoring system have been developed in prior IPRO projects. The prototypes now need to be developed into potential product form, beta tested, and evaluated both technically and from a market perspective. A patent application has been outlined. A business plan needs to be written that gathers the information required to decide on a commercial product offering to Union Tank Car as the first customer. A market survey should define the potential market within the railroad industry, the economics of such a business, and its potential in other related market segments, such as trucking. At the end of this Entrepreneurial IPRO, we should have beta tested the potential product. If the results are successful, manufacturers and suppliers should be identified to bring the product to market. A first sale offering should be made to Union Tank Car, assuming beta testing is successful. The possibility to formulate a successful business together with our first customer, Union Tank Car, will be evaluated. The team required to execute the business plan will be identified; and the.potential for financing will also be addressed., Sponsorship: Union Tank Car Company, Project Plan for IPRO 353: ChlorAlert for the Spring 2002 semester
