Method and Apparatus for Gas Analysis Utilizing a Direct Current Discharge
A method and apparatus for spectrochemical analysis of a gas is provided in which the subject gas is mixed with a carrier gas and introduced into an analysis space between two electrodes. A continuous direct current discharge between the electrodes is produced which sustains a plasma formed from the carrier gas so that components of the subject gas are excited to luminescence. Characteristic radiation emitted by the components is then detected. The carrier gas has a higher ionization potential than components of the subject gas and, for example, may be a noble gas. The method is operable at atmospheric pressure. The electrodes may be either solid wires or tubes through which the gas mixture enters and leaves the analysis space., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

The Universal Car Project (Summer 2011) IPRO 348
The Universal Car Project (Summer 2011) IPRO 348
The Universal Car Project is an attempt to utilize the web to design and specify a “universal” platform upon which a wide range of functional vehicles can be designed for developing countries. The method for developing the car will be to start with a “wiki-type” organization that will develop the standards for the basic platform, including wheel-base, construction method, materials, and standard mounting points. Once the basic platform has been standardized, the rest of the car will have an “open architecture”. Everyone who has interest and expertise could utilize the basic platform to design parts/assemblies to turn it into a complete vehicle. Individuals/companies/countries would be able to customize the platform to produce any type of vehicle that was needed or desired. This IPRO will design the process for developing the Universal Car Organization (UCO), which would design and license the basic platform and make sure that its standards were maintained. The UCO would also certify that parts/assemblies were attachable to the basic platform. Otherwise they would allow individuals/companies/countries to design and build whatever type of vehicles needed in their countries/regions. This would utilize the expertise of many more individuals and companies than is now available to the automobile industry., Sponsorship: NA, Project Plan for IPRO 348: The Universal Car Project for the Summer 2011 semester
Designing Affordable Energy, Water, And Shelter Solutions For The World's Poor (Semester Unknown) IPRO 325
Designing Affordable Energy, Water, And Shelter Solutions For The World's Poor (Semester Unknown) IPRO 325
There are currently around 40 million people living in urban slums without adequate water and sanitation in India. In addition, there is no sewage system in urban slums and water is not being recycled. In a particular slum in Mumbai that we are looking at, people need to walk to the foothill 2km away in order to get water. It takes a lot of time to carry su cient amount of water for a family for daily use. Water obtained in this way is primarily used for washing. Since there is no private place for people to wash, people often wash themselves on the street and the water is simply wasted. Our team attempted to address two main issues for this semester. Firstly, we tried to provide people with clean and private facility for washing while allowing the water to be recycled. Secondly, we tried to make transporting water easier and more e cient by developing a device that allows you to carry water on your back., Deliverables

MORE Life Project (Semester Unknown) IPRO 362
MORE Life Project (Semester Unknown) IPRO 362
The objective of IPRO 362 is to understand the environment in which disaster victims are found and the human needs involved. Additionally, understanding the medical standards of sanitation, sterility and environmental control conditions that are expected in an operating room are all central to developing a humancentered design. In order to be able to ensure the success of the M.O.R.E. Life project, design needs to focus on the following: MEDICAL PERSONNEL •Provide the necessary tools and equipment which medical personnel need in order to perform medical interventions •Identify and provide a surgical environment satisfying necessary sanitary, given the environmental limitations in a disaster relief situation. STRUCTURE/PORTABILITY •Work to make the mobile operating room (M.O.R.E) design as compact as possible, while still keeping sanitary standards as high as possible. FILTRATION •Design an effective filtration system that will allow for environmental control within the structure. •Address sanitation by taking into account airborne pathogens can be filtered out of the air. POWER •Design an energy-efficient power system for the mobile operating theatre, considering alternative energy sources. DESIGN •Create and refine a design for the operating theatre, including a carrying case. •Replicate standard operating room conditions in the mobile version. •Conduct a market analysis to identify key stakeholders, advantages and disadvantages of existing products and current costs., Deliverables

Rapid Manufacturing of Casters (semester?), IPRO 312
Rapid Manufacturing of Casters (semester?), IPRO 312
The objective of this IPRO is to investigate techniques for rapidly and effectively manufacturing casters to satisfy “rush orders” for special casters. Conventional manufacturing is based on part-specific tooling suitable for high-volume, planned production. Attempting to insert special “rush orders” into such an operation is very inefficient and expenses., Sponsorship: Colson Associates, Deliverables for IPRO 312: Rapid Manufacturing of Casters for the Spring 2006 semester

Helper Monkey Technologies Inc (semester?), IPRO 354
ENPRO 354 pursues the design development program of Helper Monkey Technology (HMT). In this initial stage, the members of IPRO 354, or HMT, will research into marketing, products, and operations factors and resources; then apply facts and figures to assimilate into the concept of HMT; verifying assumptions and employing the most concrete results to confirm the validity and profitability of HMT. The products of the research and cyclical assimilation and testing will contribute to composing a solid business plan, and a firm “Investors Pitch.”, Deliverables for IPRO 354: Helper Monkey technologies Inc for the Fall 2006 semester
