- Large x physics: recent results and future plans
- The valence region is exceedingly important in hadron physics since this region not only defines a hadron but also is an excellent discriminator of nucleon structure models. Present uncertainties in light quark distribution functions at high x could also impact high energy physics. Here we will describe a new generation of experiments at Jefferson Lab that is aimed at the high x region of the nucleon. It is noted that the proposed Electron Ion Collider could explore the high x regime., Sponsorship: IIT College of Science, High Energy Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory

- Urban Forestry (semester?), IPRO 317
- The goal of IPRO 317 is to create an operational and business model for Urban Forestry Management. Presently, the future of Chicago’s urban forest is in question. While few refute the claim that trees are good for our community, allocating the resources to properly maintain or even expand our urban forest remains beyond our grasp. Our team seeks to make the urban forest a viable commodity in addition to its status as an asset. This would include examining the problem as a closed loop process as well as the sustainable harvest potential of the urban forest. The overall goal would be to create a business model that would increase the number of trees within the city, turn the revenue loss of tree maintenance into a revenue gain, and create a self sustaining model which will have the ability to stand on its own., Deliverables for IPRO 317: Urban Forestry for the Fall 2007 semester

- Method and Appartus for Forming Ultrafine Metal Powders
- A method and apparatus for producing ultrafine metal powders in which a laser beam is focused on the surface of a workpiece or feedstock and moved thereacross so as to create a cavity within the workpiece through melting and vaporization that contains the metal melted to form the cavity. A subsonic pulsating blast of inert gas is directed at the cavity to atomize the molten metal, rapidly cool the resulting droplets, and transport the droplets to a collection area. The cavity formed by the laser beam is a "keyhole" of deep cavity having a depth approximately three to four times greater than its width. The focal point of the laser beam is moved across the workpiece at a rate from approximately 50 to 80 inches per minute to ensure that the molten metal remains in the cavity prior to the gas atomization. Alloy metal powders can be produced by this method of laser blast atomization providing an alloying metal at the base metal where the cavity is formed so that, upon melting of the base metal, the alloy metal will melt into solution with the molten base metal in the cavity prior to gas atomization. Additionally, nonmetallic impurities may be removed from the molten metal contained within the cavity formed by the laser beam by vaporization., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

- Delta Hook Technology (Semester Unknown) EnPRO 358
- Recreational fishing is a sizable market, generating over a billion dollars of economic output and providing well over a million American’s with jobs. There are many variations of fishing hooks available that retain the same basic shape and structure, the most popular examples being, the standard J-hook, treble hook and the new “Trokar”, which is “surgically sharpened”. However, there are many limitations associated with existing fishing hooks. One such limitation is that fishing hooks are not able to reliably hold the fish after embedding. Introducing a barb to the hook usually solves this issue, doing so however creates problems when setting the hook and furthermore, barbs can cause damage to the fish during the removal process. Another concern is that contemporary fishing hooks have problems with snagging on nearby rock formations, algae, weeds, or other vegetation in the water., Sponsorship: DHT, Deliverables

- IIT Saves Water (Summer 2011) IPRO 346
- The purpose of this project is the advancement in knowledge of, and applied practical solutions to the challenges of sustainability in regards to a very specialized area of water conservation. The harvesting of air conditioner condensate could potentially lead to the conservation of a great deal of both water and money. Pentair, a company specialized in providing water solutions, is interested in the technology to harvest the condensate from A/C in buildings, and is our sponsor. We aimed to create public awareness surrounding the potential non-potable use of air conditioner condensate through demonstration and presentation. The IPRO Team of Summer 2011 will advance the prior work by focusing upon building public awareness and working to change public policy. The Team will utilize social media promotional strategies/messages and implementation. The Team will also identify the practical and political barriers to main stream harvesting of condensate and develop action plans to overcome the barriers. The two activities of the Team will be to build public enthusiasm for condensate harvesting via social media and secondly to summarize all IPRO condensate efforts into a presentation with collateral materials and share it with organizations that have outreach missions of sustainability and conservation., Sponsorship: Pentair, Inc, Project Plan for IPRO 346: IIT Saves Water for the Summer 2011 semester
