- Creating an Interdisciplinary Robotics Initiative @ IIT (Spring 2003) IPRO 316: Creating an Interdisciplinary Robotics Initiative @ IIT IPRO316 Spring2003 Final Presentation
- The IPRO team will investigate the general area of self-powered and mobile robots and create an action plan with recommendations for specific robotics-centered IPRO projects and other activities at IIT. It is critical that the team develop a common level of understanding and appreciation for project opportunities in robotics. This can be accomplished in several ways during the semester, through (1) a hands-on project experience, (2) review of the literature, (3) field trips to institutions that play a role in robotics research, design, development and marketing, (4) organization of an IIT special interest group (SIG) focused to topics in robotics, and (5) exploration of the opportunities for IIT to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Professor Lykos will facilitate team discussions with other faculty at IIT who have expertise in various aspects of robotics. The extent to which the above five task opportunities are addressed is a function of the size of the team, level of experience of team members, and specific interests of team members. Students who have a background in robotics or are highly motivated to develop a deeper knowledge about robotics technology are strongly encouraged to contact Professor Lykos to discuss their role on the team and suggest areas of focus for the team's work before enrolling in this IPRO section., Sponsorship: IIT Collaboratory for Interprofessional Studies, Project Plan for IPRO 316: Creating an Interdisciplinary Robotics Initiative @ IIT for Spring 2003 semester

- Synthetic Biology: Engineering a Novel Organism (semester?), IPRO 302
- The specific plan for our IPRO is construct a synthetic biological circuit, that is both novel, aesthetically pleasing and independent of the host organism. This is a first step toward implementing entirely synthetic organisms that can be designed to a specification. The target we have chosen is a synchronized biological oscillator, implemented in a vertebrate organism, the zebrafish. To produce an organism requires a wide variety of skills and tasks. Accordingly we have organized into subteams, each responsible for progress in some area, with an administrative sub team overseeing all the events., Deliverables for IPRO 302: Synthetic Biology: Engineering a Novel Organism for the Fall 2006 semester

- Maintaining and Implementing a Knowledge Management System (semester?), IPRO 338
- IPRO 338 project started in 2003 was designed to address the issue of knowledge transfer in the IPRO teams. Due to an 80% student turnover rate and few teams continuing across semesters a large amount of valuable project knowledge was being lost. To address this issue, the IPRO knowledge management tool – iKNOW, was developed to assist with capturing and cataloging the knowledge generated from IPRO projects during each semester. This semester, IPRO 338 was charged with the full implementation of IKNOW across the 36 teams in the IPRO Spring semester. However, since this report was completed prior to the iKNOW upload deadline, a full accounting of the number of compliant teams was unavailable., Sponsorship: Tom Jacobius, Deliverables for IPRO 338: Maintaining and Implementing a Knowledge Management System for the Spring 2006 semester

- Green Building Design Concept & Integration (EnPRO357)
- Our purpose is to seek the best solution to designing a sustainable mixed use building for our client in Oak Park. A model of which can also be applied to other sites in the area. The design will focus on a solution that minimizes energy consumption and environmental impact by incorporating available sustainable technologies, sustainable design strategies, and analysis of economic viability., Deliverables

- Crisis Management and Security Program (CMS) (Semester Unknown) IPRO 370
- The IIT IPRO 370 Crisis Management and Security Program (CMS) is in its fourth stage of development. The current goal is to further develop the capabilities of our web based program that can be used by organizations to assist when determining how well their crisis management plans stand up to different methodologies, assessments, and scenarios during the testing process. Also to start marketing our web site to attract a community of many users to assist in the growth of the CMS program. The initial grant for this project was funded by the Homeland Security Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center. Ms. Irene Rozansky, CEO and founder of R&A Crisis Management Services Inc. will be our sponsor to ensure that we develop a program able to test existing crisis management plans for companies, organizations, and individuals who lack a response ready approach in times of crisis., Deliverables

- Material Renovation (Spring 2002) IPRO 308: Material_Renovation_IPRO308_Spring2002_Final_Presentation
- The goal of this IPRO project is to create a realistic proposal for renovating and restoring Crown Hall to Mies Van der Rohe’s original vision while still keeping the building functional for today. By following guidelines for its new landmark status and last semester’s research on the high priority problems of the building we created a plan of restoration that is hopefully comprehensive enough to put into effect as soon as possible., Sponsorship: Getty Conservation Grant Program, Project Plan for IPRO 308: Material Renovation for the Spring 2002 semester

- Delta Hook Technologies (DHT) EnPRO 358
- Recreational fishing in the United States generates over a billion dollars of economic output and providing well over a million American’s with jobs. There are many variations of fishing hooks available that retain the same basic shape and structure, the most popular examples being, the standard J-hook and the standard treble hook. However, there are many limitations associated with existing fishing hooks. One such limitation is that fishing hooks are not able to reliably hold the fish after embedding. Introducing a barb to the hook helps resolve this issue, doing so however creates problems when setting the hook and furthermore, barbs can cause damage to the fish during the removal of the hook. Another concern is that contemporary fishing hooks have problems with snagging on nearby rock formations, algae, weeds, or other vegetation in the water., Sponsorship: DHT, Deliverables
