Show moreThe goal of IPRO 320 is to create an online professional network for school teachers at the kindergarten through twelfth grade level to allow for the sharing of ideas, lesson plans and other professionally relevant information. This is a continuing project which saw limited success in the previous semester in that a functioning web site was constructed based on surveys of public school teachers but it saw very little use. This semester, the planned approach is to build on the research generated last semester by performing additional market research with teachers. Following that, IPRO 320 will rework much of the previous web site by refining some of the features, adding additional ones as the research indicates and improving the website in general, both functionally and aesthetically.

Show moreIn an age where sustainability and “going green” have reached an all time high in both the media, and in politics, new initiatives are being explored more than ever before. Many of these initiatives would require drastic changes both in the way corporations do business, and in the way average citizens live their lives. However, there are initiatives which require very little change in lifestyle and business practice, and potentially represent great savings to those who choose to implement them. Like its predecessors, IPRO 346 aims to raise public awareness of the recycling and reuse of condensate produced by air-conditioning systems. This condensate is a byproduct of all AC units, and is currently sent straight to the sewer. Studies conducted by previous IPROs have not only indicated great potential for this initiative, but have also shown a great deal of public interest. Unfortunately, they have also revealed government policies and city codes which greatly restrict the use of this abundant resource. The aim of IPRO 346 is to work towards a change in these policies through the demonstration of a viable system. Members of the team equipped with a model of the systems we propose will meet with public officials, and others interested in the system, demonstrating its potential in hopes of getting policies in place which would allow such a system to be implemented. The IPRO has two main objectives: the development of a prototype and model for demonstration, and the marketing of the idea through the use of both social networks, and presentations to anyone interested. It is the aim of this team, that the accomplishment of these goals will result in both public demand for AC condensate recycling systems, and public policies which allow their use.

Show moreIn light of the global sustainability movement, several mainstream ideas and designs for low to zero carbon emission vehicles have been developed. In the case of all electric vehicles (EVs), Li-Ion batteries seem to be the favored technology due to their high energy density relative to competing energy storage technologies. Despite its superiority to other batteries, it still lacks the energy density to practically achieve comparable range to a fossil fuel powered car, and faces additional challenges in terms of refueling and infrastructure development. Therefore, technologies are needed to ease this demand and possibly supplement it. IPRO 313 has undertaken the task of using Zinc as an electrochemical fuel. The design is based on a Zinc-Air fuel cell developed by John F. Cooper of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) [1]. The design allows the zinc to be provided as < 1 mm sized pellets in a saturated solution of KOH. Using Zinc as a fuel means that exhausted fuel, ZnO, can be recycled. The fact that the metal is recyclable lends this technology to requiring a minimum of new material to sustain the transportation infrastructure. Most importantly, in comparison to current refueling mechanisms, Cooper et. al showed that a battery can be refueled in less than 10 minutes [2] making it a good competitor in the current and emerging eco-friendly vehicle market of which the IPRO plans to build on. So far the IPRO has designed and constructed one prototype and conducted pressure drop experiments. The plans now are to improve the current ZAFC design and investigate the relationship between the electrolyte flow rate and the energy output. Once the single ZAFC has been tested and is providing the output needed, several more will be constructed and put together in an array to supplement the primary battery pack used to provide instantaneous power to the electric engine. Subsequently, the team will begin working on the staple of the project which is to design a mechanism which will refuel the ZAFC array by replacing the old electrolyte and zinc solution with a fresh electrolyte and zinc to all cells.

Show moreThe IPRO 319 team’s objective for this semester is to create a model of a distribution operation which will aid companies seeking to outsource logistics operations. However, the team’s main objective is to create a web based application for efficient and cost-effective analysis allowing companies to determine the effectiveness of outsourcing any aspect of a warehouse. This team will also attempt to establish a strong team-working environment based on the knowledge and capabilities of each individual given their different fields of study for the successful completion of the goals presented for the IPRO group, as well as gaining useful experience and knowledge for every member

Show moreThis semester IPRO 335, Capstone Design, continues placing its efforts in designing the most innovative and creative architectural and structural design from senior undergraduate and graduate students. The same project from last semester, the New United Center, will be analyzed, explored, and redesigned in detail to meet new requirements. The primary goal in this semester long project is to implement the knowledge and new techniques learned at IIT along with the experience from individual members in order to create a unique and superior product. Most of the basic design was completed last semester; nevertheless there are many areas that must be designed or some portions that will be modified.

Show moreA method of securing against an unauthorized transmission within an authorized multimedia transmission from a sending data processor to a receiving data processor. The method includes altering the network transmission to interfere with the unauthorized transmission and render the unauthorized transmission invalid to the receiving data processor while not noticeably interfering with the streaming multimedia transmission. Monitoring for retransmissions or retransmission requests also serves as an indicator to an administrator that an unauthorized transmission is occurring. The method of this invention can be implemented by network administrator middleboxes such as firewalls.

Show moreThe main problem which our project faces is what to plan to build in the Michael Reese site, which was recently demolished to make room for the Olympic village. Since Chicago did not win the bid for the 2016 Olympics, the site remains vacant and unused. The basis of the IPRO is to develop a plan for this site, and, specifically, to design a building to serve as an anchor for the area. This anchor building should serve the community while still remaining economical.

Show moreThere are currently around 40 million people living in urban slums without adequate water and sanitation in India. In addition, there is no sewage system in urban slums and water is not being recycled. In a particular slum in Mumbai that we are looking at, people need to walk to the foothill 2km away in order to get water. It takes a lot of time to carry su cient amount of water for a family for daily use. Water obtained in this way is primarily used for washing. Since there is no private place for people to wash, people often wash themselves on the street and the water is simply wasted. Our team attempted to address two main issues for this semester. Firstly, we tried to provide people with clean and private facility for washing while allowing the water to be recycled. Secondly, we tried to make transporting water easier and more e cient by developing a device that allows you to carry water on your back.

Show more3 billion people cook their meals over open fires on primitive stoves inside their homes. Indoor air pollution from those primitive stoves kills 1.5 million people worldwide. Furthermore, indoor air pollution is fifth most costly environmental degradation issue in the Peru. Previous IPRO 325 classes have made stove for Peru. However, the stoves made from previous IPRO 325 classes did not work properly. The purpose of this subteam of the spring 2010 IPRO 325 is to improve the stove and help Peru realistically.

Show moreAll 4 Kidz Enterprises is a minority and women-owned business based in Homewood, Illinois. All 4 Kidz Enterprises specializes in providing multicultural learning aids and children's books with audio CDs for children ages 2 and up. This is done primarily through its "Urban Kidz" series of books. The author, Angela E. Davis, is a retired elementary teacher with a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction/Early Childhood Education. Her passion for educating young people led her to develop a series of books that would be both educational and enjoyable. She is also a frequent visitor to schools, conducting "Meet the Author Day", where she speaks to both students and teachers about realizing their dreams. Angela's mission is to provide young children with books and toys that will enhance their learning and broaden their thinking. To that end, she has developed a concept for a line of learning doll called Tummi Pals. Angela has researched the market and has not found a doll with the attributes of Tummi Pal. Her hope is to fill the void left by the initial excitement of the Cabbage Patch dolls.
