Show moreThe Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations are a system of nonlinear di erential equations that describe ow of charged particles in solution. This dissertation is about the design of numerical schemes to solve this system which preserves global properties exhibited by the system. There are two major advances presented. The rst is the design of schemes that conserve mass globally when the system is coupled with no- ux boundary conditions. Most notably, a scheme using central di erencing and TR-BDF2 achieves second order accuracy in both space and time, while also conserving global mass is presented. The second is the design of a more general scheme that preserves the time-varying properties of the free energy of the system. One such a scheme uses central di erencing in space and trapezoidal integration in time to achieve second order accuracy in both space and time, while also preserving the energy dynamics, but at the cost of requiring positivity of the solution. There is also a discussion of solution methods: the classic Newton iteration scheme is compared with a modi ed Gummel iteration scheme for the purpose of solving the transient equations. The intended application of this work is the modeling of ion channels, and many of the simulations presented use parameters consistent with models of ion channels.

Show moreRe-entry residential communities are an integral part of the criminal justice system. They focus on re-entry prepartion, including job training and drug treatment. These group homes are located in the community where inmates serve a period of time after being released from federal prison, in order to prepare for reentering the community. The inmates are required to go outside during the day to work or participate in community services. Law offenders are housed in penal establishments as a punishment not for punishment. Preservation of personality & prevention of deterioration call for as high a priority as efforts to bring about the inmates’ re-entry into the society. Hence the concept of correction, reformation & rehabilitation of prison inmates should come to the forefront of any community correction center’s adminstration.

Show moreThe purpose of this IPRO is to establish a strong foundation for the future of urban agriculture. The growing problems regarding the traditional methods of agriculture, and the rate of growth of the world population, the team plans to design a method to grow food more efficiently and economically in urban areas. The team is looking at large, industrial warehouse-type buildings that have outlived their primary use, and creating a plan that utilizes these buildings to grow enough food for the surrounding communities.

Show moreThe problem posed with blind and visually impaired (BVI) swimmers is one of safety and independence. BVI individuals need to be able to orientate themselves in a swimming pool and avoid obstructions like lane-lines, pool walls and other swimmers for a safe experience. Additionally, it is important to BVI swimmers to maintain their independence and maintain a low profile during this experience. The Buoy team will focus on the design, testing and implementation of assistive technology focused on a pool environment with continuous input and feedback from the BVI community. A current passive device created in previous IPROs will be field-tested in a BVI pool for the semester in order to identify failure-modes of the device and collect real-world BVI user feedback to discover areas for improvement. Additionally, two groups have been organized to assess the use of invisible-fence and ultrasound technology in the creation of new assistive technology. Surveys and interviews will be conducted with the BVI community on a continuous basis to ensure the Buoy team is meeting the needs of the market.

Show moreSudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for an estimated 325,000 deaths each year according to the Heart Rhythm Foundation. Cardiac arrest is different from a typical heart attack because it involves a complete stopping of the heart. Brain injury is likely to occur if the cardiac arrest is untreated for more than 5 minutes and a person cannot be revived after 10 minutes of no action. This is because the arrest sets off a chain of metabolic reactions, which leads to swelling of the brain tissue. Cardiac arrest results in ischemia reperfusion injury, which is when circulation is restored and high levels of oxygen rich blood rushes back into the brain causing brain damage. Decreasing the metabolism of the victim may result in a decrease of ischemia reperfusion injury. Reducing the oxygen level that enters the body when the victim revives and slowly increasing this level may also reduce reperfusion injury. However, current procedures dictate that 100% oxygen be given to cardiac arrest victim.

Show moreFor years, the IPRO Program at IIT has been forced to operate wherever space can be found. Often, facilities are not equipped for the needs of the program. It has become necessary to find a way to give the IPRO Program its own dedicated space. If we give the program its own space, then what is needed in that space? What needs to be done with it? What types of spaces are necessary? What technologies will be used? IPRO 301 exists to answer these questions. We will provide ideas to IIT that can solve these problems. ii

Show moreIPRO346 will focus on familiarizing itself with British Petroleum’s (BP) wastewater treatment plant (WTP) for its oil refinery in Whiting, IN. Specifically, this IPRO will analyze the current permits and their stipulations regarding the amount of ammonia and total suspended solids (TSS) in the wastewater being dumped in Lake Michigan. Ultimately, possible methods and designs will be devised to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS remaining in treated wastewater. These designs will take the form of a process flow sheet with a computer simulation to model the designs. At the culmination of this IPRO we will have several different models for possible upgrades to the Whiting refinery wastewater treatment plant to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS in the wastewater entering Lake Michigan as well as a cost to implement each solution.
